The pounding at the back of my head had long since subsided. I groaned out softly as I opened my eyes and sat up. My whole body was tense and sore. Looking around me, I was quite surprised at what I saw. Firstly, my sister, Tina, was laying next to me. I checked her but it seemed she was just asleep. I spotted Warrity and Daniel sitting together close by. Liam was sprawled out in front of them and I guessed he was also sleeping. Aside from those that I knew, there were five others’ in the room with us. The grey stone floor and walls were cold, and I noticed that there were no windows. The room was quite large and held five bunk beds. Three fluorescent lights shone brightly and one flickered, which caused me to flinch when I looked at it for a second too long. Warrity saw that I was awake and hurried over to me.
“Hey,” he greeted softly, and I looked passed him to the large gate that ran across the whole entrance of the room.
“Are we in prison?” I asked him as I checked him out, he didn’t look to be wounded or hurt which was a good thing.
“Something like that,” he whispered. “Daniel and I both saw a man before we got knocked out. I’m guessing the same thing happened to you?” I scrunched my nose as I thought back to the last thing that I remembered.
“We had stopped at a petrol station and I had gone to the bathroom, that’s the last thing I remember,” I said honestly. “I don’t remember seeing anyone,”
“Ok, well, these other guys are all wolves,” he informed me, and I nodded slowly as I looked around at them. Two females, one looked fairly young, probably around twelve or so and the other one looked to be about sixteen or so. The younger one had blonde hair and green eyes and the older one had brown hair and brown eyes. They both looked terrified and quite upset. Three males. One of them was comforting the younger girl. He looked somewhat similar with his blonde hair and light green eyes. I guessed he was about fifteen or so. The other two looked older, somewhere between eighteen and twenty. Both had dark brown hair and brown eyes. However, one was pale, whereas the other was darker. Ten wolves in total. “They were all taken in remarkably similar ways to ours. That’s Terri,” Warrity said as he pointed at the older female. “She’s from a pack called, The Bane Howlers. The little one is Bonnie, she’s the youngest one here as she is ten and she is from a pack called The Night Star. Now the male comforting her is Kodan and he is from her neighboring pack called, The Dark Fur Walkers. The pale one is Riddick and he is from a pack called The Craven Tails, and the last one is Chandler and he is from The Claw pack,” I listened carefully to the information Warrity gave me and wondered what the connection was between us.
“Any idea why we were taken?” I asked curiously.
“None, we haven’t seen anyone else. When I woke up, those two were already awake,” he nodded over at Chandler and Kodan. “The beds already had clean sheets, blankets, and pillows and each one had a tray of snacks and stuff,” Warrity got up and went over to one of the bunkers. He came back with a tray and a bottle of water. My stomach suddenly grumbled, indicating that I could eat. I took it from him with a soft smile and tore open the small bag of cheesy crisps.
“What else?” I asked as I ate.
“Well, we all seem to have one thing in common,” Warrity said as Daniel came over to join us. “We are all the firstborn,” I nearly choked on the sip of water I had taken and gasped at him in surprise.
“What do you think it means?” I questioned them but they both looked as lost as I felt. “And what about escaping?” I asked.
“Nope, the gate is some kind of high-grade silver and this whole room is lined with wolfsbane, can’t you feel it?” Warrity asked as he looked at me closely. It was then that I realized why I felt so weak.
“Yeah, now that you mention it,”
“What about your wolf?” Daniel asked me softly and I tried to reach out to him. I could feel him, but he was faint. Almost as if he was sleeping or something. I shook my head and Daniel nodded before going back over to Liam. I finished the pack of crisps and tore open the energy bar next. Taking a big bite, I noticed Bonnie watching me. I looked down at the tray and chose between the last two items left. I threw the chocolate and vanilla pudding cup her way and Kodan caught it easily before giving it to her. She smiled brightly and mouthed out a soft ‘thank you’ to which I simply nodded. I wasn’t much of a pudding cup wolf anyway. I stood up as I finished the bar and wandered over to the gate. I couldn’t get too close, but I could see that beyond the gate was a small hallway with one door. That gave me no indication of where we were or anything that could possibly help us.
“Colin!” I heard Tina suddenly shout out and I turned around and rushed to her side. She immediately grabbed onto me and squeezed hard.
“Ok, ok,” I moaned out as I gently removed myself from her iron grip. She looked around and for the first time in our twenty years, my sister actually looked scared. I immediately pulled her towards me and whispered in her ear. “We’ve been kidnapped. War, Daniel, and Liam are here with us. The others are also wolves and have also been kidnapped. Don’t be scared,”
“Alright,” she whispered back. Warrity had gotten her tray and he handed it over to her with the bottle of water. I noticed that Liam had also awoken and that Daniel was taking care of him. I left Tina with Warrity and went over to Chandler and Riddick.
“Hey,” I greeted them. “I’m Colin from The Blood Sun pack,”
“Chandler and this is, Riddick,” they both smiled but it was clear that there was no sparkle in their eyes.
“Any idea who has done this or why?” I asked them.
“No, we don’t know anything,” Chandler said as he took a sip of his water. “When we woke up here, we immediately tried to get out,” he added as he held out the palm of his hand. I could see the burn mark and I cringed.
“Ouch,”
“Yeah, ouch,” he chuckled dryly and shook his head. “Otherwise, we’ve just been sitting here watching everyone else wake up, eat, and talk about what the hell is going on here,”
“You guys are family, though right?” Riddick asked as he nodded over at my sister.
“Yeah, Tina is my sister, Warrity, Daniel and Liam are my cousins,” I informed them.
“So, is this s**t about you guys or what?” Riddick asked and I already knew that the two of us wouldn’t be getting along very well.
“I highly doubt that because then why are you all here?” I snapped back. Chandler burst out laughing and I grinned sheepishly before heading over to Bonnie. I smiled sweetly at the young girl and it was clear she was still afraid.
“I don’t like them,” Terri whispered, and I nodded at her before glancing over at Bonnie and Kodan.
“Any idea who is behind this?” I asked.
“None, you?” Kodan asked me but I quickly shook my head.
“No idea. I’m Colin, by the way,” I said and they each smiled politely at me. Bonnie included. It was while I was chatting to Kodan and Terri that we all heard the sound of a door opening and we all rushed to the gate. Well, as close as we could. A tall slim man, dressed in a pair of dark green overalls, pushed back his messy brown hair and smiled at us.
“I am glad to see that you are all awake,” he said, and I frowned. He had a thick southern accent and a drawl that made it hard to understand him. “My name is Keanu and for right now, I am the only other person you are going to see,” he said. I took a step closer and flinched at the wave coming towards me, but I stood my ground. I had questions and I wanted answers. “Oh, hey now! I’d take a step back if I was you,” Keanu warned, and it was then that I noticed a long metal stick in his hand. It was bright orange and I recognized it as an electric cattle prod.
“Are we animals?” I growled out without thinking.
“Well, yeah,” he said as he rolled his eyes. “Now, I know you just want answers, but you are just going to have to wait for now,” he added. “By the way, I’ll be bringing dinner in about an hour, so I would finish up those snacks and put it over there,” he nodded over to the right and I looked over to see a metal flap that I guessed was where we would be served our meals. I watched as Keanu went over to the box type thing and unlocked it before throwing in a black bag. Something I had also not noticed before. The slot (yes, that is what I am going to call it) was a lot bigger than I had noticed before. Keanu waved before leaving out the only other door. I quickly tried to see outside but it was pointless. Keanu was a lot faster and the door was closed before I could see anything. I stepped away from the gate and breathed out a massive sigh of relief. The strain on my body wasn’t comforting. Terri grabbed the bag and started cleaning up. I shook my head as I went back to my sister.
“What the hell is going on, Colin?” she whispered.
“I wish I knew,”
“Did you smell it?” she asked, and I frowned.
“Smell what?”
“So, you didn’t smell it?”
“No, what did you smell?” I asked her curiously.
“It smelt like salt and sand,” Tina said as she finished off her pudding cup. I hadn’t smelt anything but then again, I hadn’t been paying much attention. I had tried to see out the door but that’s it. Although by Keanu announcing that he would be serving dinner soon told me that it was probably late afternoon. What day was it? I wondered as I went over to one of the bunk beds. Warrity was laying on the top bunk and Daniel was on the very next bunk at the top and the two of them were chatting. I looked around for Liam and saw him chatting with Riddick.
“Did you guys pick up anything when Keanu left?” I asked them curiously. Daniel shook his head and laid flat on his stomach. I don’t think he likes me very much. Warrity looked as if he was constipated and then he nodded slowly.
“Maybe I was just standing in the right spot at the right time, but I think I saw a palm tree,” he said.
“Well, Tina said she smelt salt and sand, do you think we are at the beach or something?”
“No idea, but that would be pretty cool,” Warrity commented and I rolled my eyes. Nothing about this set up was cool.
“It’s not cool,” Daniel remarked as he sat up and faced us. “If we are at the sea then we are a very long way from home,” he pointed out and I groaned as I sat on the bed just underneath Warrity. Daniel was right. A river or a lake was what we were used too. The beach was a long-ass way away. Like, an airplane rides away. Tina had started helping Terri get all the rubbish together and I figured a nap wouldn’t hurt. I closed my eyes and silently prayed that the next time I open them, I will be back home.
