Mrs. Edwards was very kind to me when I first arrived. She gave me a home when nobody else would trust me, and in time, I was able to repay her kindness by paying my deposit and that first month’s rent. Her face goes from happy to see me to very sad in an instant.
“Is something wrong, dear? Who is that man? Do you need me to call the police?” Her face becomes angry, and I can’t help but just hug her.
“No, everything is fine. I know it’s sudden. This is my fiancé, Damian. He has asked me to move in with him. That’s all.” I try to smile, but I can see that she doesn’t believe me. She shakes her head and opens her mouth to say something, then closes it for a moment.
“Well, I see you’ve made up your mind. I will keep the place for a month.” She frowns, throwing a suspicious look in Damian’s direction. “I can’t keep it for longer, but you will have a home if you need one.” I thank her and as soon as she closes her door, I glare at Damian.
“Fiancé, huh?” He looks so damn happy!
“She’s old. She wouldn’t understand anything else.” I return to the apartment and, moments later, his beta appears at my door. Damian orders Mike to take my bags downstairs and I take one last look around the apartment.
I can’t believe that when I woke up in the morning, I was looking forward to a wonderful day! I return my keys to Mrs. Edwards who still looks upset, but this time she wishes me well with a hug before I leave. We get into the back of a black SUV and I inform Damian that I still have to resign at work.
“Is all of this really necessary?” He sighs, rolling his eyes and I glare at him.
“If you don’t want the human police looking for me, then yes.” I huff, and he tells his beta to drive us back to the restaurant. Damian wants to follow me inside, but I turn on him.
“NO! Having you there once was enough? If I’m going to convince them that I’m okay, you need to stay here!” I glare at him before storming off. I don’t know how the hell I’m going to explain all of this! These were all the people that took me in when my own family didn’t even accept me!

“She’s a little firecracker!” Mike pokes me in the side and I glare at him. He is right. Flare the rogue is going to be my biggest challenge to date, and she’s my destined mate.
“I want you to reach out to the packs here in the city. Find out if she is one of them. Although I don’t think she is. She doesn’t smell like any of them, but she also doesn’t really smell like a rogue.” I frown and he nods.
“She has to be a rogue. I can’t imagine any pack allowing one of their single females to be waltzing around the city all alone.” Mike frowns and it’s my turn to nod. It’s not ideal having a rogue for a mate, but since I gave up on finding mine a long time ago … I guess beggars can’t be choosers and all that.
She is beautiful, and strong, and clearly very hard-headed. She will make the perfect Luna. When she storms out of the restaurant, she doesn’t say a word, but I note the tears in her eyes. I open the car door, and she gets in and looks the other way as we pull out of the parking lot.
All I want to do is sweep her off her feet and take her home. I want to protect her and give her the life she clearly never had. But first, I have to finish my business in the city. She will just have to hang around the hotel until then.

When we arrive at the hotel, I assume that we are there to collect his things, but I’m wrong. I follow him into the elevator, and I’m not surprised when his beta presses the button for the top floor. We walk straight into the penthouse suite.
It’s more luxurious than I imagined on the way up, and I have to clamp my jaw shut to stop myself from openly gawking. I can see that the furniture is probably the most expensive they could find, and I note the bar is filled with every possible alcohol you can think of.
“Make yourself at home.” Damian sighs deeply and only then do I notice his beta bringing my bags in. I glare at Damian.
“What’s all this?” My fury finally boils over.
“I have some business I have to finish before we can go home.” He pours two drinks and hands me one before taking a seat on the couch opposite from where I’m standing.
“You are kidding me! You could have given me that time to settle my affairs!” I growl. I see the flash of amusement in his eyes and I really want to slap him.
“I could have, but I didn’t want to. You are my mate, Flare. I want you by my side.” He smiles, studying his drink, and I really, really want to slap him. He is so damn arrogant. Overly self-confident! A typical Alpha.
“How long is this business of yours going to take?” I cross my arms and cling to my glass. I really want to empty it, but I also want to stay focused. It takes a lot of alcohol to impair a werewolf, but I don’t want to take any chances right now.
“Just a couple of days. It won’t take long.” He shrugs.
“And what am I supposed to do while you take care of business?!” I glare at him and he smiles.
“You can come with me, or you can go anywhere in the hotel. Just don’t leave the hotel. I will be working in one of the conference rooms.” He takes a long sip and I wonder if I’m getting under his skin or if he just likes the taste.
“Do you have a pack in the city? I want to meet them before we go home.” He catches me off guard. I gape like a fish out of water for a moment. This isn’t a question that I am prepared for in any way. What do I tell him? If I tell him I have a pack …
