Flare
“Well, if you have to.” Chef doesn’t look happy. “Just finish the lunch rush, then you can go.” He huffs before disappearing and I feel awful. He has always been kind. Then again, I never in my wildest dreams imagined that my mate would walk into a human restaurant in a human city!
“This could take a while. Sit and have lunch, and we can talk once I’m done working.” I show Damian and his friend to a table and try my best to focus on the job at hand. It’s difficult though. I can feel his eyes on me.
I can also feel the stupid mate bond pulling me toward him. It’s enough of a distraction that I nearly give the wrong table the wrong order! By the time the lunch rush is over, I’m relieved to say goodbye to everyone before making my way out of the restaurant.
I know Chef isn’t happy, but at least they will all be safe. Damian and I walk down the street toward my apartment while his friend follows a couple of steps behind. That means it’s his beta. I sigh deeply as we walk into my apartment building and Damian hasn’t said a word.
He doesn’t know where I’m taking him. He doesn’t know a thing about me. What is up with him? He looks older than me. Why doesn’t he have a mate yet? Why isn’t he talking?!
“Pack your things. You are coming with me.” He says as soon as we walk into my apartment. I can see from the look in his eyes that he doesn’t like what he is seeing, but I don’t care. I grew up with all the luxuries and have found that I don’t need them.
“Excuse me?” I whip around and glare at him. “I don’t know how things work where you come from, but here women have rights. I have the right to stay. I won’t be ordered around by some brute who thinks he has some mystical right to own me!” Wow!
Where did that come from? I’m impressed. I note a flash of amusement cross his eyes before he makes himself comfortable on my couch.
“Then how do you do things where you come from?” He smiles, putting me on edge instantly!
“Nowhere.” I sigh, crossing my arms tightly over my chest.
“Good then we can leave.” He gets up and is about to grab my hand when I pull away just in time and he misses.
“NO! I can’t just leave. I have a job. I have responsibilities. I have things to take care of. Humans don’t take kindly to people just disappearing on them. They get the police involved and everything.” Wow! Again! I’ve learned how to speak up for myself, and it feels so damn good!
“Okay, then I will stay here until you’ve tied up all the loose ends, and then we will leave.” He sits down on the couch and I feel like slapping the damn confident smirk off his handsome face.
“You can’t!” I hit back.
“Why not?” He is so damn fast!
“For one, people are going to wonder what’s happening outside.” I point at the door, and he tilts his head in confusion. “Your beta. Humans don’t have guards outside their cheap apartments.” Damian nods and I see his eyes glaze over.
“There he is gone. Now what do you have to do so we can get out of here!” It is clear he is NOT going to let me get away.
“You can’t just walk into my life and demand that I change everything.” I pace back and forth feeling trapped as my mind keeps drifting to that first moment when he pulled me into his arms. My knees nearly gave out, and I turned into a damn puddle!
Something is different about this bond. It almost feels stronger than the one I had with Simon. I thought I was over all that! I thought I was strong. I thought I had moved on and made peace that I would be spending the rest of my life working as a waitress and my evenings watching television on my own!
“I can. You are my destined mate.” He nods as though that is that and I don’t have a say. I sigh and cross my arms over my chest. I want him to get that I’m not moving! He sighs before getting up. With his hands firmly planted on his hips, he glares at me.
“You are coming. Now, you can either do what you have to do or we can leave right now. I’m not leaving you.” He is a lot taller than I am, and I have to look up, which is infuriating.
“You don’t even know my damn name, yet you want to take me away. You know nothing about me.” I try one last time and keep his gaze.
“Hi, I’m Damian, but you know that already, and you are?” He flashes a brilliant smile and holds out his hand. I look at his hand and then into his eyes again and sigh.
“Flare. I’m Flare.” I whip around and storm off to my room. “There is coffee in the kitchen if you are thirsty.” I shout over my shoulder, thinking to myself that I will be damned if he thinks I’m going to serve him!
I pack what I can into the suitcases that I have. Something tells me that we aren’t coming back and that if I don’t pack what I want to keep, I will never see it again. Once I’m done packing, I storm right past him and out of the door.
He follows me as I make my way up one flight of stairs and down the long passage. When we reach the door at the very end, I glare at him for a moment before I turn my attention to the kindly old lady who opens.
“Hi, Mrs. Edwards. I’m here to give you my notice. Unfortunately, I have to move. I’ve paid up for the month, and you should have some time to fix up the place with my deposit. I won’t be needing it back.” I ramble through what I have to say.
