Taking A Stance

Avery’s P.O.V. “You are really something, Emma. You are the first girl that I have seen who still has an appetite after heartbreak,” Vincent chuckled, and I glared hard at him while stuffing my mouth with food. I didn’t pay attention to him, and continued eating my dinner. After that encounter with Xavier and his girlfriend, I was glad that they left me alone and no one came to ask anything to me except Vincent who was now like a thorn stuck into my back. Why couldn’t he leave me alone like others? “The former king, Xavier’s father,” he spoke after some time while eating his dinner. I raised my brows, looking at him questioningly while chewing the contents of my mouth. “He wants to meet you tomorrow morning. He should have met you this evening, but after,” he stopped suddenly and looked at me with concern. “To be honest, Vincent… I don’t give a s**t about Xavier and his personal life. You and me… both of us know the truth behind this whole farce. I am not the person to shed tears for someone who is not mine at the first place. We are not even friends, let alone having any romantic feelings for each other,” I replied to him nonchalantly and gulped the content before speaking again. “So… let’s not talk about this matter anymore. I have enough worries in my plates, and his girlfriend or his love life is definitely not one of them,” I finished what I wanted to say in the same tone, and put a piece of steak inside my mouth. Emma was an emotional girl and often slept on an empty stomach because she always lost her appetite after an emotional harassment implicated on her by Sandra, her friends, or any other pack member. It was the stark opposite to me. I always had an urge to eat something whenever I got tense or sad. So…. Here I am feeling my stomach to content. I stopped eating when his scent hit my nostrils. I gulped lightly and continued eating without lifting my eyes. He was engaged to Emma, not me. So, I didn’t need to be bothered by his affairs. I needed to find a way to go back in my world, and this was the only task that needed my attention right now. I heard dragging of chair across me, but I didn’t lift my head up, and kept on eating. This world was so real, just like my world. The only difference was that they were not normal people or else I won’t mind living with them, and finding a way to get my revenge. I stopped eating when I remembered something from Emma’s memories. “Uhhh… Vincent,” I called Vincent with a curious gaze. I still hadn’t seen them shifting into his or her wolf, and Vincent seemed the best person to ask this. He also looked at me questioningly. “Do you go for …… (I immediately scanned her memories for the exact word)…. Run?” I asked him when I got the right word. Wow…… Run???? Sounds like fun to me. “Yeah… I am the second to the head warrior in our pack. I always like to have my runs during my patrol at night. Why did you ask?” he answered me truthfully and asked me in the end. I grinned immediately. I could ask him to shift into his wolf during his run, right? “Uhhh… I also like to have a stroll after dinner. Will you mind joining you tonight?” I asked him while giving him a puppy look. He immediately looked at Xavier cautiously, making me roll my eyes internally. “If… if you have a problem… I can ask to… to the former king. I am sure that… that he will grant me a simple wish of having a run with you,” I immediately said further. He cleared his throat after gulping the contents of his mouth down. “It… it’s not like I can’t take you out for a stroll, Emma…. But you are still not a member of this pack. Going out with me will give you some unwanted attention, especially when you,” he explained, but paused in the end, giving me an apologetic look. “When I don’t have my wolf,” I finished his sentence bitterly and lowered my eyes. “I… I am sorry, Emma,” he apologized to me immediately. I shook my head while smiling bitterly. “You don’t have to apologize, Vincent…. This is a cruel truth, and I faced it all my life. I am wolfless, but it doesn’t mean that I need to stay inside the walls all the time,” I replied to him, and slowly lifting my eyes in the end. He still had that apologetic expression on his face but with a faint smile. “Yeah… you are right. Let me take permission from Xavier. He is the person in charge here in the absence of the king, his elder brother,” he answered me, and I frowned. The last thing that I wanted was to include Xavier with me by any means. “Forget it, then… I guess I can have a rain check tonight. We will discuss this after my formal introduction to the pack,” I replied calmly to him and lowered my eyes to the plate once again. There was silence on the dinner table again. I was not in the mood to meet with the royal family after that farce outside. I was glad that the former king and the queen were generous enough towards me that they didn’t force me to meet them tonight, or had dinner with them. Vincent told me that the present king, Xavier’s elder brother is out of the pack because of work, and would come back after two days. “I need to go, Emma. Marie will escort you to your room after you finish your meal,” Vincent informed me while standing up hurriedly. “What happened?” I asked him out of concern when I saw him standing up hurriedly. He hadn’t finished his dinner too. “Something came up,” he informed me, and I knitted my brows in confusion. I didn’t hear him talking with anyone else, and his phone also didn’t ring. How did he get the information? Suddenly it clicked in my mind and I rolled my eyes once again. Thanks to god, Emma couldn’t mind link anyone. Listening to someone in your head???????? How weird. I heard Xavier clearing his throat, but I didn’t pay attention to him. Why was he here? He should be his beloved girlfriend. “If… if you want to take a stroll, I … I can go with you,” he said in a low and cautious tone. “Thanks for the offer, Xavier, but I am good,” I politely refused his offer without looking at him. “We…. We can be friends, Emma,” he said again, and I scoffed. I slowly lifted my head up, and saw his handsome face with sad eyes. “I don’t want everyday drama in my life, Xavier. You have a girlfriend… I get this…. One day, you will find your mate, and she will be your forever…. Again I get this…. I am your nominal wife, and will remain behind the curtains…. I get this too…. Let’s be just an acquaintance instead of any other relationship. I don’t want to involve myself in your life… a… and it will be better if you also stay out of my personal life,” I replied calmly to him, stating my stance on our relationship. The fork in his hand twist and I gulped hard in fear, but I didn’t let the fear show on my face. I sighed and looked down at the plate, losing my appetite now. “You can be friends with Vincent, but not with me, huh?” Xavier taunted me, and I scoffed aloud this time. “Yeah.. he can be a friend to me, but not you, Xavier…. Not after having a complicated, and weird relationship with you. You are a royal, and I can understand your ego, but don’t expect that I will do anything only to soothe your ego. I am me.. and for me… myself comes first over anything,” I answered him in a firm tone, and slowly stood up from the chair. “Enjoy your dinner, my prince… I will take my leave,” I said to him in a polite, but insincere tone, passing a fake smile. I didn't see any need to entertain him. “Sit down, Emma… and finish your meal,” he instructed me, and I groaned in frustration this time. How didn’t I notice earlier that he was such a pain in a**? “I am full, my prince…. I can’t eat more… and I am sure that you won’t force me to eat more than I can, can’t you?” I replied to him in the same respectful and distant tone that I had been using on him since the beginning of our conversation. He chuckled and threw the fork on the table. “You want to draw a clear line between you, right?” he asked me while shaking his head lightly. I could tell that he was angry, but didn’t know what the real reason was. “We should, my prince. It is just a marriage alliance. You don’t have to be obligated towards me for any reason. I am capable enough to care for myself,” I answered him truthfully and bowed my head. I had enough drama for a day, and I wanted to sleep peacefully right now. “Very well, then…. Let’s keep things like this,” he said in a bitter tone, and I passed a tight smile before looking for Marie. She immediately appeared in front of me, and gestured me to follow her. She was trembling slightly, because of Xavier’s anger. He was excluding his anger through his aura, and Marie was an omega. His aura was too much for her to bear. I gently put my hand around her shoulder, taking her in my side embrace. Emma was a few inches taller than Marie. “Relax, my love… everything is okay. He is not going to kill you,” I joked with her and winked. She was startled by my gesture towards her but smiled meekly in the end. I chuckled and looked forward. “Tell me something about the palace, and the royal family, Marie,” I asked her the same question that I asked Xavier in the car, but he didn’t answer me. “What do you want to know, my lady?” she asked me in a respectful and low tone.
