Chapter 4

602 Words
"Are you okay, baby?" Nathan's voice came out soft and sultry as he quickly pulled out a chair and hurried over to me. Baby? Did he really just call me that? He wrapped his arms around my waist, and for a brief moment, it felt like I was in some kind of trance. But that feeling didn’t last long. A wave of disgust washed over me, knowing that the smile he wore so convincingly was fake. Ugh! Nathan’s hands tightened around my waist, pulling me closer to where his father and sister stood. I forced myself to meet his father’s piercing blue eyes, but something about them stirred feelings inside me that I wasn’t ready to admit. His father cleared his throat, shifting his gaze to Nathan. “Aren’t you going to properly introduce us to your fiancée, son?” I swallowed hard, my heart pounding. Nathan gave a curt nod before turning to face his father. "Father, this is my fiancée, A..." "Adele," I interrupted, a forced grin stretching across my face. I couldn’t believe it—Nathan didn’t even care enough to remember my name. “Yes, Adele,” Nathan replied with a chuckle. “Meet my father, Cole. He’s the Alpha of this great pack.” Cole. Oh goddess! He extended his hand for a shake. I hesitated for a moment, unsure if I should accept, but Nathan nudged me forward, so I took it. Time seemed to freeze as our hands connected, a current of power flowing through the handshake. But the moment was shattered by a high-pitched voice echoing through the room. “I’m Madison! Nathan’s precious and only sibling. Fun fact: he loves me so much, and cannot do without me.” She covered her mouth to stifle a loud giggle. “I’m so happy to have you here, Adele!” I smiled widely at Madison, and this time, it was genuine. It felt reassuring to know that someone was genuinely pleased to have me here. Cole's voice brought me back to the moment as he said, "Sit, Adele. Let’s enjoy our meal." Hearing my name roll off his tongue was like honey to my ears, but I brushed it aside. Even though Nathan and I were getting married for the sake of a contract, it didn’t feel right. I wasn’t supposed to feel this way. Dinner went smoothly, except for Cole's constant glances that made me squirm in my seat. His piercing eyes were enough to steal away any appetite I had left. I faked a polite smile before excusing myself, lying about needing to tend to something urgent. I rushed up the stairs, closing the door behind me as I leaned against it, my heart still racing. Shaking my head in disbelief, I tried to gather my thoughts. How had things spiraled so fast? So many events and mistakes all at once. I couldn’t believe that I had been so careless—rushing into the wrong room and ending up having a one-night stand with the Alpha of this pack. How had I gotten myself into such a mess? It felt like I was trapped in a dungeon of my own making. No matter how much I tried to steer clear of the Alpha's family, here I was—right in the middle of it. And this wasn’t just for a few days or weeks; I was bound to them for an entire year. I let out a heavy sigh as I slumped onto the bed. Thoughts swirled through my mind, and before I knew it, I had drifted off into another restless sleep.
