Chapter 5

Adele: I rubbed my eyes groggily, yawning loudly as I slowly woke up. A small part of me had expected to wake up in some shabby, rundown room, but instead, I was surrounded by luxury, the soft morning light casting a warm glow across the elegant space. It felt surreal, almost comforting. Though I had once lived like this in my former pack, I still found myself grateful to the Moon Goddess for a moment like this. Getting out of bed, I went about my morning routine, losing track of time as the hours passed by. Eventually, I found myself back in bed, trying to relax, when my phone suddenly rang, its loud sound echoing through the room. A voice came on immediately I answered it. “Hello, Miss Adele, your mother wants to see you. Could you please come over?” I scrambled out of bed and raced out of the house, feeling a flicker of relief that I didn’t have to drive my old, beat-up car anymore. Nathan, in one of his rare gentlemanly gestures, had given me one of his cars to use when I needed to go somewhere. I hopped in, the engine purring to life, and sped toward the hospital. By the time I reached the building, my heart was pounding. I hurried inside, my steps quick and focused—until I approached the receptionist’s desk. She looked up with a smug expression that instantly irritated me. I took a deep breath, steadying myself. "Hi, I’m here to see my mom, Phoebe Martins. She was—" "That way." The receptionist cut me off, her smug expression unwavering as she pointed down the hall. I forced a quick smile, muttering a thank you before rushing in the direction she’d indicated. I stepped into the room, where I found the doctor, his back slightly turned as he looked over a chart. “Hi, Doc,” I began, my heart hammering in my chest. He turned to face me. "I wanted to talk about her bills. I need just a little more time to get the payment ready—I promise I'll settle it as soon as possible." The doctor simply smiled at my words. “Your bills have been paid off.” I blinked, stunned. “They… they have?” I managed to say, barely believing the words. He nodded, then turned to my mother. “You can stay with her for some minutes, but she needs rest.” As he walked out, I hurried to my mother’s bedside, my heart racing with relief and confusion. How had this happened? Her eyes were dull and shadowed, with a tiredness that seemed etched into her skin. Her skin was pale, almost translucent, and her breathing came in soft, uneven waves. I gently took her frail hands into mine, giving them a light squeeze. Her lips parted as if she wanted to speak, but then closed without a word. I sighed. It’s been six long months, yet, no significant change. But I wasn’t about to give up on her now. After spending some quiet moments by her side, I whispered a final promise. “You’ll be okay, Mum. I’ll make sure of it.” I pressed a gentle kiss to her cheek, then reluctantly pulled myself away. Still a bit overwhelmed, I returned home with just one thing on my mind—finding Nathan. I wanted to thank him, as reluctant as I was to admit it, for taking care of my mother’s bills. I wasn’t sure how he’d even found out, but he had, and he'd acted. For a moment, it almost felt like he’d gone out of his way to be decent… or maybe he was just fulfilling his part of the contract. As I climbed the marble stairs to find Nathan’s room, the sound of Cole’s loud and sultry voice drifted down the hallway, drawing my attention. It was unmistakably him, and the urgency in his tone piqued my curiosity. I paused, deciding to tiptoe closer to his door, my heart racing as I pressed my ear against it to listen. “Make sure you clear out any remaining bills. I can’t risk Adele losing her mother now.” His words hit me like a jolt, and I stifled a gasp, my hand flying to my mouth. Cole had paid my mother’s medical bills? How did he even know about our situation? I was certain Nathan hadn’t mentioned anything. “Keep an eye on the Crystal pack too, you—” His voice cut off abruptly, leaving me curious about what he was about to say regarding my father’s pack. I leaned in closer, straining to hear, when suddenly the door swung open, sending me tumbling into his arms. “I knew it. You were eavesdropping on my conversation? That’s rather unethical,” he remarked, and I felt a lump form in my throat. Quickly, I disentangled myself from his hold, steeling myself to confront him about my mother, my pack. But as I met his piercing blue eyes, my resolve wavered. They stirred something within me, making my heart race and my body soften. “I... wasn’t,” I stammered, tearing my gaze from him as I attempted to walk away. But he grasped my hands and pulled me back, pinning me against the wall. His warm breath brushed against my neck, sending a shiver down my spine. I swallowed hard, my wolf stirring restlessly within me, urging me to claim his lips as they hovered tantalizingly close to my skin. No... no. “H-how did you find out about my mother?” I asked. “And my—” “You’ll find out soon enough, mate,” he replied, causing my heart to race. Could it be true? He was really my mate. I had known ever since that night. “Are you surprised? Did you think that night was just a coincidence? There was something about you I can’t quite explain—something about what you did to me that night. I haven’t felt that in years.” His lips traced a path down my neck, igniting a fire within me. I felt an overwhelming urge to push him away, but I couldn’t bring myself to do it. With his hands still tightly pinning me In place, his kisses trailed back up to my neck, and he claimed my lips. If felt good. “Ugh, you—” My words were abruptly interrupted when the door swung open, revealing the last person I expected to see.
