Chapter 2 — An Unfamiliar Feeling

667 Words
Morning arrived quietly over Moon Valley Pack. Soft sunlight slipped through the curtains of Lyra’s room, warming the wooden floor beneath her feet. Lyra opened her eyes slowly, taking a moment to remember where she was. The unfamiliar room. The forest outside the window. The new pack territory. Right. Moon Valley. She sat up and stretched slightly. The long journey yesterday had left her body tired, but the rest helped. For a moment, everything felt normal. Then her wolf stirred again. Not nervous. Just… aware. Lyra frowned slightly. “You’re still acting strange,” she murmured under her breath. Her wolf didn’t respond. A knock came at the door. “Lyra? You awake?” Daniel’s voice called from outside. “Yes,” she replied, getting out of bed. She opened the door to find him already dressed, leaning casually against the wall. “Breakfast downstairs,” he said. “And the Alpha wants to meet us after.” Lyra nodded. “Alright. Give me five minutes.” Daniel smiled. “Take your time.” After he left, Lyra quickly got dressed and tied her hair back. She glanced once more at the forest outside before leaving the room. Downstairs, the guest house dining area was quiet. A few pack members sat at different tables, talking softly while eating. Lyra and Daniel found a table near the window. Daniel looked relaxed as he poured himself some coffee. “You’re thinking again,” he said casually. Lyra looked up. “Am I that obvious?” “Only when something is bothering you.” She hesitated before answering. “It’s just… the territory.” “What about it?” Lyra searched for the right words. “It feels different.” Daniel chuckled softly. “Well, that’s because it’s not our pack.” “Maybe.” Still, the strange feeling hadn’t completely disappeared. It wasn’t fear. Just a quiet pull she couldn’t explain. Before she could think about it more, the woman from the front desk approached their table. “Alpha Kael will see you now,” she said politely. Daniel stood first. “Alright. Let’s go.” Lyra followed him outside. The pack house stood a short distance from the guest house, larger than the other buildings and surrounded by tall trees. As they approached, Lyra’s wolf suddenly became alert. Her steps slowed slightly. Daniel noticed. “You sure you're okay?” “Yes,” she said quickly, though her heart had started beating faster. They entered the pack house. Inside, the building was calm and quiet. A guard led them through a hallway before stopping in front of a large wooden door. He knocked once. “Come in,” a deep voice answered. The guard opened the door. Lyra stepped inside behind Daniel. The office was spacious, with tall windows overlooking the forest. Behind a large desk stood a man she immediately recognized. Alpha Kael. He was taller than she expected. His dark eyes studied them calmly, but something in his expression changed the moment his gaze fell on Lyra. For a brief second, neither of them spoke. Lyra felt it again. That strange pull. Her wolf shifted. Pay attention, it whispered. Kael’s brow furrowed slightly. Not anger. Not confusion. More like curiosity. Finally, Daniel stepped forward. “Thank you for welcoming us, Alpha Kael.” Kael nodded once. “You’re from Silver Brook Pack.” “Yes,” Daniel replied. Kael’s gaze moved back to Lyra again. This time it lingered a little longer. Lyra tried to ignore the sudden tension in the room. Her wolf had gone completely still. Watching. Waiting. Kael leaned slightly against his desk. “You arrived yesterday evening.” “Yes,” Lyra answered. His voice remained calm when he spoke again. “Then perhaps you can explain something.” Lyra blinked slightly. “Explain what?” Kael studied her carefully before speaking. “The moment you entered my territory…” He paused. Then finished quietly. “…why did my wolf react?”
