Chapter 3 — Something Unspoken

560 Words
For a moment, the room remained silent. Lyra blinked, unsure how to answer Alpha Kael’s question. “The moment you entered my territory… why did my wolf react?” She didn’t know what he meant. “I’m not sure I understand,” Lyra said carefully. Kael watched her closely, as if trying to read something beyond her words. Before he could respond, Daniel spoke. “React how?” Kael shifted his attention to him. “My wolf noticed her presence immediately,” he said simply. Daniel frowned slightly. Lyra felt her stomach tighten. She hadn’t expected to be the center of attention in a pack she had just arrived in. “I didn’t do anything,” she said quietly. “We only came for the training program.” Kael nodded slowly, as if considering her explanation. “I’m aware,” he replied. His voice was calm, but Lyra could still feel the quiet tension in the room. Finally, Kael straightened and moved back toward his desk. “The training begins tomorrow,” he said. “Until then, you’re free to explore the territory.” Daniel smiled politely. “Thank you, Alpha.” Kael gave a short nod. The meeting seemed finished. Lyra turned toward the door with Daniel, relieved that the strange conversation was over. But just as they reached the doorway, Kael spoke again. “Lyra.” She stopped and turned back. “Yes?” His gaze lingered on her for a moment before he asked calmly, “How old is your wolf?” Lyra hesitated slightly. “Twenty-one,” she answered. Something flickered in Kael’s expression. Not surprise. More like interest. “I see.” He didn’t explain further. Lyra nodded politely before leaving the office with Daniel. They walked through the hallway in silence until they stepped outside the pack house. The fresh air felt relieving. Daniel glanced at her. “That was… strange.” Lyra let out a small breath. “A little.” “Why do you think he reacted like that?” Daniel asked. “I honestly don’t know.” But deep down, Lyra had a feeling there was more to it. Her wolf had been unusually quiet during the meeting. Too quiet. As if it had already discovered something. They walked slowly toward the guest house. Pack members passed them occasionally, greeting them politely. Everything seemed normal again. Yet the strange pull in Lyra’s chest hadn’t completely disappeared. Later that afternoon, she decided to walk alone near the forest behind the guest house. The quiet helped clear her mind. The trees swayed gently in the breeze, and the distant sound of birds filled the air. Lyra stopped near the edge of the woods. For a moment, she simply stood there. Then her wolf stirred again. Stronger this time. Lyra frowned slightly. “What is it now?” she murmured. Her wolf finally responded. One word. Soft. Certain. Mate. Lyra’s heart skipped. “That's impossible,” she whispered. At the same moment, deep inside the pack house, Kael suddenly froze in the middle of a conversation with one of his guards. His wolf growled low in his chest. One word echoed in his mind. Mate. Kael slowly looked toward the forest outside. Toward the place where Lyra stood. And for the first time since becoming Alpha, he felt something he had never experienced before.
