Chapter 6 — Questions Unasked

622 Words
The dinner ended later than Lyra expected. The hall slowly emptied as pack members returned to their homes, their voices fading into the quiet night. Lyra and Daniel walked back toward the guest house together. For a while, neither of them spoke. The night air was cool, and the moon hung high above the trees, casting soft light along the path. Lyra kept her gaze forward, trying to ignore the lingering tension from earlier. But she could feel it. The way everything had shifted the moment Kael entered the room. The way her wolf reacted. The way Daniel had looked at her afterward. “You’ve been quiet,” Daniel said finally. Lyra forced a small smile. “I’m just tired.” Daniel didn’t respond immediately. They walked a few more steps before he spoke again. “That’s not it.” Lyra’s steps slowed slightly. “What do you mean?” Daniel stopped walking. She turned to face him. His expression wasn’t angry. Just serious. “Something’s been off since we got here,” he said. “And it’s not just the new environment.” Lyra felt a small knot form in her chest. She already knew where this was going. “Daniel—” “Just answer me honestly,” he said gently. “Do you feel something?” Lyra hesitated. The truth sat right there, heavy in her chest. But saying it out loud would make everything real. “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” she said quietly. Daniel held her gaze. “For him.” The words hung between them. Lyra looked away. “That’s ridiculous.” “Is it?” Daniel asked. His voice remained calm, but there was something else beneath it. Uncertainty. Lyra shook her head. “I just met him. How can I feel anything?” That part, at least, was true. She didn’t understand what she was feeling. Daniel watched her for a long moment before sighing softly. “Maybe I’m overthinking it,” he said. Lyra didn’t respond. Because deep down, she knew he wasn’t completely wrong. They resumed walking. When they reached the guest house, Daniel paused near the entrance. “I’m going to step out for a bit,” he said. “Clear my head.” Lyra nodded. “Okay.” She watched him walk away before heading upstairs to her room. Inside, everything was quiet. Too quiet. Lyra sat on the edge of her bed, staring at nothing in particular. Her thoughts felt tangled. Daniel’s question kept replaying in her mind. Do you feel something? She pressed her hands together slightly. “I don’t,” she whispered. But her wolf stirred. And this time, it didn’t stay silent. You do. Lyra closed her eyes. “No.” You felt it when he entered the room. Her breathing slowed. She didn’t want to admit it. Didn’t want to think about what it meant. Before she could respond, a sudden, unfamiliar sensation ran through her. A pull. Stronger than before. Lyra’s eyes opened immediately. “What was that?” Her wolf didn’t answer. But the feeling remained. Like something—or someone—was close. Without thinking, Lyra stood and walked toward the window. She pushed it open slightly and stepped onto the small balcony. The night air brushed against her skin. And then she saw him. Kael stood not far from the guest house, partially hidden by the shadows of the trees. His gaze was already on her. As if he had been expecting her to appear. Lyra froze. The distance between them wasn’t close. But it didn’t feel far either. For a moment, neither of them moved. Then Kael took a slow step forward. And Lyra’s wolf responded instantly.
