Chapter 7

Luna Anya began her physical assessment. She looked at the bruises on my wrists and ankles, then looked into my eyes before asking, “Dear girl, were you r***d?” I looked away from her before shaking my head. "They tried, but they did not succeed," I whispered. I heard the sharp intake of Luna Anya’s breath, then I heard her quietly say, “Well thank the Moon Goddess for that.” She continued with her assessment and when she got to my back, she whispered, “Dear Goddess.” After her initial inspection, she checked my ears, and throat, then my eyes. She listened to my chest, checking my lungs and my heart. When she had finished, she had me get dressed and handed me a specimen jar. “Just across the hall there is a bathroom. I just need a urine sample,” she explained. I nodded before walking over to the door. Unlocking the door, I opened it and walked across the hallway to the bathroom. I went into the bathroom and stepped into one of the stalls. Once in there I collected the urine that Luna needed and finished up, flushing the toilet and washing my hands before walking out of the bathroom, specimen jar in hand. May was standing in the hallway and when she saw me, she hissed, “Rogue filth.” I looked at her, not wanting to engage, but I won’t lie, part of me wanted to hit her so badly. “What? Nothing to say, you pathetic rogue,” she hissed, glaring at me. A look of pure hatred upon her face. “May! Leave now!” Luna Anya snapped from the doorway of the examination room. “Luna?” May asked looking at her in surprise. “You’re fired,” Luna Anya said, causing May to look at her in horror. “But Luna, you can’t do this. I need this job,” May told her. “Well, you should have thought about that before you brought your prejudices into this facility. You have no right to treat any patient like they are not worthy. I have watched you treat patients like they were beneath you before, but this is the last time it will happen. You’re done. Now pack your things and get out,” Luna Anya told her. “The Alpha will hear about this,” May hissed, glaring at Luna Anya in open hostility. “Oh, I am sure he will. Just be sure you give him all of the facts when you throw your pity party with him,” Luna said. As I watched their exchange, I noted that Luna had not looked surprised by the statement May had thrown at her. May huffed before turning around and storming off. I watched her storm off then I turned back to Luna Anya who was looking totally unfazed by the exchange. She smiled at me and held her hand out for the urine sample. “I will have the urine tested and the results will go into your file. Obviously if there is any reason for concern, I will let you know immediately,” she said. “Okay. So, what do I do now?” I asked her wondering what the next step was. “My mate is waiting for you near the nurse’s desk. I will just put this into a pathology bag with the documentation that accompanies it, then I will walk you out there to him,” she replied. I watched as she did what she had to do and a moment later we were walking down the hallway. She stopped at the nurse’s desk and handed the pathology bag over to a young nurse, as she asked the nurse to take the sample down to pathology for her. Then she took me over to where the Alpha was waiting for me. “So, how’d it go?” he asked her, not looking at me at all. I watched the Luna as she looked at him and shook her head, looking like she was about to cry. The Alpha looked at me then, and in his eyes, I noticed something. He wasn’t looking at me with the same look in his eyes that he had had that morning. Something had shifted in that moment with the Luna. There was now a look of vulnerability in his eyes. He had been wrong and it didn’t sit well with him. Alpha’s hate to be wrong almost as much as they hate having to apologise. But this was worse. Because not only had he been wrong, he had gone and made it clear to people that he believed me to be a liar, only to have his own mate confirm what he had been told by Eric earlier that morning was in fact the truth. My realisation was confirmed for me when Luna Anya looked at him and said, “You owe her an apology Xavier.” Alpha Xavier looked at me, and I could see that he was wishing the floor would open up and swallow him. “Sorry,” he muttered, avoiding eye contact with me. “For the sake of the Moon Goddess, Xavier, say it like you actually mean it,” Luna snapped, sounding like she was scalding a child. Xavier, looked at her sheepishly, before looking at me and saying, “I am very sorry for doubting your story, Miss James.” "So... are you going to go and tell all the people you went and blabbed too that you were wrong? You know, all the medical staff you went and told about the meeting in your office when we first got here? Even though you had given Eric your word it would stay between the three of us?" I asked him, holding his gaze. I was not going to accept his apology. I couldn’t forgive him for what he had said to members of the hospital staff. The implication that I was lying, that I had made it all up. I couldn’t forgive him for that. Maybe I would never be able to forgive him for that. "I... well... I..." Alpha Xavier stumbled over his words. "You like to flap your gums to people who have no need to know things about others," I stated, cutting him off. Alpha Xavier looked at me in shock. Luna looked at me in total understanding and gently said, “It's okay, Cleo. I know that you are unable to forgive him for what he said and the way he so openly doubted you.” “Anya…” Xavier hissed. But she cut him off and said to me, “Once you get to know him better, you will see that he is a fool. Most men are. You will learn this as you get older.” “Anya,” Xavier hissed again. “Xavier, do stop trying to interrupt me,” Luna said, chastising him like he was a rude child. The Alpha looked away, appearing to be embarrassed by the reprimand. He looked at me and said, “We should get back to my office. I need to finish my discussion with you and your friend Eric.” “Where is Eric?” I asked, looking around for him. “He is already waiting for us in my office,” he replied. “Xavier, do not be a d**k back in your office. I mean it. You have already been proven wrong today. Do not do more harm than you have already done,” Luna told him. “Yes dear,” Alpha replied before leaning in and giving her a gentle kiss. With that we said our goodbyes to Luna Anya and made our way out of the hospital, heading back towards the Alpha’s office to join Eric.
