Maverick stared at the door of the container. He still couldn’t hear anything. He strained his ears, wondering what was going on out there. Where did everyone go?
And what was happening out there? It sounded like someone was blocking the sound.
The appearance of the fairy was making him uneasy. He didn’t know what his deal was with Noble, but it was giving him a bad feeling.
Cien. It seemed he was the reason for Noble’s very existence. He was behind the suffering of every supernatural being who was captured. He couldn’t believe another supernatural being was behind this.
And he created him too. Maverick ran back the weird conversation he had with Cien in his mind. The feel of his hands on his head, returned again too. And he remembered how he affected his wolf.
Wyrd, he called on his wolf. He felt him inside him. His wolf was probably answering, but because they couldn’t understand each other anymore, Maverick couldn’t hear him. It was like he was locked up deep inside him. He clenched his hands into fists as sadness washed over him.
He shook his head, shaking it off. He didn’t want to fall into that hole of feeling sorry for himself. He’d done that for a very long time after waking up in Noble’s lab. Now, he had to find a way to live.
Maverick clenched and unclenched his hands. He grunted as movement came back to his body. The drugs have finally worn off. And his wounds were finally healing.
And as if by some magic, the silence that had fallen over the container, receded and he could suddenly hear what was going on outside. Noble’s men were out there, moving around. It sounded like they were preparing to sleep.
Maverick wondered who had blocked the sound. Was it Cien? he asked himself. He lifted his head to stare at the door.
Fairies were powerful beings and they could perform magic too. Maverick wouldn’t be surprised if Cien was hiding them. He did say that he was protecting Noble.
Because of him? He clenched his jaw at that thought. He stared at the top of the ceiling, feeling like a pawn in a very complicated situation.
“Let me see the one who lives inside you,” Cien’s words echoed in his mind, sending chills up and down his body.
He couldn’t let him bring that out, Maverick thought. He couldn’t remain in Noble’s hands either. Everything was becoming too dangerous.
But he couldn’t leave either. He couldn’t leave his mate. She was out there somewhere waiting for him. If only he knew where she was.
Maverick looked back at the door. He tried to think of a way to get information about where she was from him.
Short of killing him…Maverick thought, shaking his head. If he killed him, he would never know where she was.
Fuck…he clenched his jaw.
He closed his eyes, tuning into what Noble and his men were saying.
“Why does he get to sleep inside? He should be out here in a cage,” he said, and Maverick heard some rustling as if he was settling in a tent. “I wish we could go back to the lab. This is just too much.”
“They burned everything,” one of them said. “What will you go back to? We should be lucky we were not there when everything went up in smoke.”
“f**k,” Noble growled. “And the female. Is there any word on where she might be?”
“No. There’s nothing,” one of them said.
What?
It took Maverick a minute to realise that they were talking about his mate. He tried to sit up. But the straps held him down. What happened to his mate? Maverick asked himself. He stared at the door, feeling his anger rise.
He told him that he had his mate. He threatened him with her.
“f**k. I need her. She’s the only card I have to play now. Once Cien takes him away from me, I won’t have any access anymore. But with his mate in my hands, he just might come back to me.”
“We’re still looking for her. She’s not with the Alpha King’s pack though. If we knew which pack she belonged to, maybe…” the man trailed off.
“Reagan. He would know which pack she belonged to. Did you find him?”
“No. Everything is a dead end.”
“f**k!” Noble screamed.
Maverick stared at the steel door. His anger turned to rage. He felt his wolf swirl inside him, feeding off of his anger. He could feel him slowly taking control of his body. And this time, instead of holding him at bay, he gave himself to him. His claws elongated, and his canines lengthened. He felt his whole body vibrate with an energy he never experienced before. The straps that held him down snapped as his muscles bulged.
Let’s go find her, Wyrd. He said, hoping that he understood him as he receded into the darkness that had scared him when Cein tried to bring his wolf out.
His muscles rippled, and power rushed through him. He jumped off the stretcher and he was at the steel door within seconds. He slammed his fist into it, and it flew off its hinges.
The men outside screamed at the banging sound. He walked out and stared at them as they scrambled for their guns.
“Oh no,” Noble said, coming out of his tent. He stared at him. Wyrd’s rage made him see red. Guns went off all around him, as he moved at the speed of lightning. He used his claws to s***h through the men, leaving Noble standing there in terror.
No one could blame him. Blood flowed from lifeless bodies around him. And a beast was slowly stalking towards him.
He came to a stop in front of him.
“Mate,” Wyrd’s voice was rough, unused. Maverick was shocked that he could speak. He stared at Noble through his wolf’s eyes. He could see he was shocked too.
Noble shook his head. “I don’t know where she is. But I can help you find her,” he begged. But his wolf didn’t listen. He slashed his claws across his throat. And his head fell to the ground.
He looked around him at all the c*****e he caused, but his mind was elsewhere.
Maverick saw Wyrd’s jumbled thoughts. He was clearly desperate to find his mate. And he didn’t know where to begin finding her.
Maverick tried to push back to his human form. But Wyrd wouldn’t let him.
Let me out, he said, pushing harder. But he ignored him. He looked around him, and sniffed the air. He took off, moving fast. Faster than he ever thought possible, following an invisible Maverick couldn’t see.
