Chapter 12

Elsa's PoV I stared at Sonny from behind the kitchen door, silently observing his gloomy expression, his eyes glued to his cellphone screen. I know that expression. An expression that only appears when he is remembering Wilona. Wilona. I know, Sonny never completely forgot his ex-wife and also his deceased daughter, Maya. He still keeps a photo of the two of them in the deepest part of his wallet, covered by his credit cards and a golf club membership card. On his cellphone there is also a special gallery that is locked and contains their photos. That often makes me haunted by anxiety that Sonny will love me less because he can't forget them. Two days ago, the owner of that name is now back in my life and honestly I panicked. For years I have built my new world with Sonny, making him completely mine and forgetting his life with his family before. I snatched him from that woman's embrace, and now she dares to come back? Not only back, but came with a more graceful, more beautiful, more… classy version of herself. I hate to admit it, but it's the truth. And Sonny… Sonny really looks like he misses her. I can see it from the dim look in his eyes every time he finishes looking at his phone, from his silence when I try to talk to him, from how he said Wilona's name in his sleep last night. I want to smash that phone, and scream in front of him that Wilona is no one anymore and he shouldn't think about that woman anymore because there are me and Nina, his wife and daughter now. One thing that is most important, I will not let anyone drag me down from my current position as the honorable Mrs. Sonny Kendrick. Never! My memory drifts to the past, when my life felt like an endless tragic drama. I used to be a high school girl who had a bright future. My mother always spoiled me and always taught me that beauty is a weapon, and my body is an asset. I must be able to attract a man who can guarantee my life. My father left my mother when I was only six months old in her womb. He was attracted to another woman who was younger and rich. He became resentful towards every man and taught me not to submit to them, but to be able to conquer them. I loved my mother very much and wanted to make her happy, so I always did her orders and wishes well. I was placed in an elite high school, surrounded by rich people's children. I learned how they talked, dressed, laughed, even how they viewed the world. I was ready to be one of them, and I believed, my life would be beautiful. Until everything collapsed two weeks before graduation. My mother died, hit by a car while crossing the street. But the real blow came from the reality after that: she left a huge debt, to send me to school and pay for our lives. Loan sharks came almost every day after she died, knocking on the door with threatening tones. I didn't even get to attend my school graduation, because I had run away to another city. My identity changed, my appearance changed, and the direction of my life changed too. With the remaining money and high school diploma that I managed to save, I took a course to become a babysitter. Not because I like children, but because I know, in a young and rich household, there must be a gap. And I only need one moment to sneak in and rob that beautiful household for my own interests. The first three families failed. The husbands were too afraid of their wives, and I almost got fired a few times for being too ‘friendly’ to the husbands. Then, I applied for a job with the Kendrick family. At first, everything seemed fine and ordinary. The couple Sonny and Wilona Kendrick and their daughter, Maya, seemed harmonious and in love. Sonny Kendrick was a friendly man, handsome in an elegant way, and very fond of his daughter. But I knew there were cracks in their marriage. Wilona started to become too busy with her work. She often came home late at night, and Sonny started to show an annoyed expression whenever Wilona came home later or left earlier than him. It was an expression that always gave me a signal. I played my role perfectly. I took care of their child with love, creating the warmth that Wilona had missed. I greeted Sonny every day with a smile and warm ginger tea. I listened to his complaints. I made him feel seen, heard, wanted. And finally, he fell. Fell in love with me. He considered me as a simple woman who was full of affection and gentleness, always obedient and understanding his mood, and he also felt superior because I really showed the attitude of a submissive who adored him. Sonny never really agreed with Wilona working, because he considered himself capable of providing a decent life for Wilona and Maya. However, he also could not stop Wilona because since before they were married, Wilona had been working and in the early days of their marriage, Sonny was also helped a lot by Wilona. He felt that his power as a husband was decreasing because Wilona also continued to develop in her career. I gave Sonny a guarantee that I would serve him and make him the king of my life. Sonny's high ego, I fed it well and he fell deeper into my arms because I could be fierce in bed, not as simple and necessary as Wilona. Their marriage was destroyed. And more tragically, their little daughter died. I knew people would blame me, but I didn't care. I had replaced everything. I gave Sonny another daughter, a healthy and lively baby. I recreated the happiness he once had when he first married Wilona, and that should have been enough. But now Wilona is back. With a stunning new appearance. Her hair is short, making her look fresher and younger, her skin is glowing white, and her way of speaking is full of confidence. I could see how stunned Sonny was when she appeared, even if she didn't admit it. His eyes almost jumped out of their sockets and his ears were bright red as if he was embarrassed. And that made my blood boil. I wouldn't let Wilona take back what I had taken with such difficulty. I walked into the living room with light steps, looking at Sonny who was still silent on the sofa. "Honey, are you hungry?" I asked softly, holding his arm. "I cooked your favorite grilled ribs." Sonny smiled thinly, briefly. "No, thanks. I'm not that hungry." I wanted to slap his flat face. He had the nerve to lie to me now. I saw him quickly put his cellphone in his pants pocket. “Why, thinking about her again?” I asked sharply, unable to contain myself. “Your ex-wife?” Asep turned his head, his gaze shocked. “Elsa, what are you talking about?” “I know you miss Wilona, after meeting her yesterday! I’m not stupid, Sonny!” Sonny stood up with a deep breath. “We don’t have to talk about this now.” “If not now, when? When you’ve gone with her and left me?!” I snapped loudly. I really couldn’t wait any longer. He was silent. And in that silence, I knew, I was right. He did miss his ex-wife. But I also knew one thing for sure: I wouldn’t lose. I’ve lived too long in lies and struggles to give up now. I would defend Sonny and not give him a chance to even think about Wilona for a minute. Because Sonny was mine. And I wouldn’t let him go. Not now. Not while I was still standing here. Besides, I still have a final weapon that I can rely on.
