Rowan’s Point of View
“So, no one is going to address the elephant in the room?” I asked Boom and Bastien on our way to see about the hostel.
“What elephant is that Rowan?” Bastien asked me as we walked. We chose to walk in case we had trouble we wouldn’t have to deal with the mopeds.
“Why is Scarlett not here?” I asked point blank.
Boom looked over his shoulder at me, “don’t aske questions you don’t want to know the answer to.”
“Tell me” I ignored Boom’s warning.
“I can tell you what I know, which isn’t much” Bastien offered. “Lucky called Rebecca while she was at work from wherever he was at the time and told her that Scarlett decided to “relieve” both of them from their responsibilities’ at Nabi’s.”
I stopped in my tracks, “WHAT!? Scarlett fired Lucky and Rebecca!? Why? When?”
“About a week or so ago, she said it was easier since the factory was in the Faye world and it would be easier if one team ran both stores and the factory” Bastien explained, “I suppose it makes sense, somehow.”
“No, it doesn’t! It’s f****d up, who does she think she is!?” I was angry.
“Maybe it is, but if she hadn’t Rebecca and Bastien wouldn’t have been here and if they hadn’t been here then Lucky wouldn’t have come and Dewi would’ve died. Things worked out how they were meant to” Brightside Boom said. “Your reaction is why no one has talked to you about any of it.”
“My reaction., what’s wrong with my reaction?”
“Rowan, come on man. You are vicious when it comes to people you love being hurt, in any capacity” Boom countered.
“He’s right, not that I’m faulting you for being protective but sometimes you have to eat your feelings to give people space to go through what their going through” Bastien followed up. “I’m willing to bet the last thing Lucky wants to do is talk to you about the issues in his marriage and have you tearing after Scarlett.”
“Damn, when you put it like that…” I considered what they told me. I had to admit they had a point; I was known to have a temper from time to time. “I’ll try and convince him that I won’t get mad, and I’ll eat my feelings like Bastien said.”
“We should’ve waited for Suke to get here; he’s really intimidating looking. How many mortals wouldn’t give him what he was asking for?” Boom asked.
“I can’t think of anyone, mortal or not that wouldn’t give Suke what he was after. Worse case scenario, we charm into selling us the hostel” Bastien said.
“I wish we could charm Dewi into forgetting what’s she’s been through” I hung my head, still feeling guilty about not realizing how badly she was injured.
“You and me both brother” Boom looked sad, “unfortunately we can’t. The traumatic memories go way to deep for us to get rid of.”
“I know, but it still sucks. Hold up, is this it?” I said when I saw what I assumed was the hostel.
“No way, it can’t be. It’s too perfect” Bastien looked at the sprawling property. Sure, it needed some work, but it had everything it needed to be a great clinic. The main building looked like a small ranch house with an attached building that looked like a roadside motel. It had an outdoor communal kitchen and plenty of outdoor seating areas, that no one was using.
“Well boys, smile pretty, as Danny would say” Boom said to Bastien and I as he opened the door. No one was behind the desk, so Bastien rang the bell that sat on the counter.
I took the opportunity to look around while we waited, “it really wouldn’t take much to get this up and running.”
“It’s like it was meant to be” Boom smiled.
“There seems to be a lot of that on this island” Bastien scanned our surroundings not sure if he should relax or not.
“You want room?” A small old man asked us when he came from the back.
“No thank you sir, are you the owner?” Boom said politely.
“Yes, if you are here looking for someone, I make it my business to not know anything about the criminals that come here. Don’t waste your time. I don’t know nothing about nothing” he turned to go back to wherever he came from.
“Excuse me sir” Boom called after him, “I don’t mean to pry but you don’t seem like you like it here to much.”
“What’s to like? The animals aren’t as messy as these people, I always stuck cleaning up and fixing things. All the time! I build this with my own hands to support my family, but the people so crazy I can’t have my family here. But I have no way to support my family” the old man held out his weathered hands.
“What if we could help you out and take this off your hands?” Bastien asked as he took off the backpack full of Indonesian currency.
“How you do that?” The man scoffed at him.
Bastien unzipped the backpack and handed it to him, “with this.” The old man’s eyes got huge as he looked at more money than he’d ever seen in his life.
“You mean it?” He looked at us in disbelief.
“Yes sir!” Boom answered.
“Come, I give you a tour. Show you how things work.” Boom followed him into the back.
I looked at Bastien, “I hope this cheers Lucky up a little bit but that still leaves us with another problem”.
“Just one?” He watched Boom and the man.
“Dylan is going to flip her s**t when she finds out Scarlett fired them.”
Rebecca’s Point of View
“Do you want to talk about whatever’s bothering you?” I asked Dylan while we sat outside with Jones and Raffa. Danny and Budi left for the airport before the guys went to the hostel.
She glanced up at the room Lucky was in with Dewi and Eka, “somethings up with Scarlett, I have no idea what’s going on.”
“I thought something was going on with her. I was sure of it after she laid us off.” I wasn’t looking forward to telling Dylan about that, but I knew she’d find out eventually.
“Wait. Scarlett f*****g fired you!?” Her eyes flashed amber.
“And Lucky. Her reasoning made sen…”
“Oh, hell no! It does not make sense!” She interrupted me. “There is nothing you can tell me that would make sense! That’s it. I’ve had enough, if she won’t come here, then I’ll go to her.”
“How are you going to go to the Faye World?”
“I can’t go into there, but I can do to the room Helena set aside for Jones. I’ll talk to her in there.”
“Okay, fair enough. How are you going to get there?” I was trying to passively talk her out of going. She was far to angry to go now, but it wasn’t working. “Maybe you should stop and consider m how much harder this could make things between her and Lucky.”
“This has nothing to do with her and Lucky. This is between us; I wasn’t thrilled how she spoke to me last night and now I’m really not happy. She might have it in her head that she can treat people some type of way, but I’ll be damned if she’s going to treat me like that.” Dylan was adamant, I knew no one could talk her out of confronting Scarlett. “I’m sure Danny or Suke knows the way; I’ll have one of them take me.”
Laa’s Point of View
“You’re itching to ask how much further, aren’t you?” Danny asked me.
“No, not at all. I’m enjoying the beautiful scenery.”
“That’s good because we’ve got another hour, at least” he told me. I couldn’t hide my disappointment which thrilled Danny to no end. He burst into laughter. “I kid! I kid. In fact, we’re here.” The car came to a stop.
“No, we’re not, all I see are trees” I gently pushed the back of Danny’s head from the backseat.
“Hence the treehouse” Danny said straight faced.
“The car not fit through the trees, mam” Budi smiled at me.
“Budi, are we really here? I don’t believe Danny” my heart was pounding with excitement.
“We’re really here!” Budi assured me.
“I see how things are. You believe Budi but not me” Danny pretended to be insulted.
“Go on, I’ll bring our things in” Suke kissed my hand that he was holding. I didn’t argue, I ran down the worn footpath to the beautiful house nestled in the trees. I didn’t bother to knock before I ran inside.
“Look at this sight for sore eyes” I exclaimed.
“LAA!” Dylan jumped out of her seat and hugged me.
“Aunt Laa is here!” Rebecca said to Jones as she came over to us.
I took Jones from Rebecca, “let me get a look at you” I held him in the air as he wiggled and grinned at me. “You’re such a good, happy boy. I missed you!” I covered him in kisses. “Dylan, how are you feeling?”
“I feel great, she made me a concoction before I went to bed last night and I was good as new when I woke up. I’m sorry you came all this way for nothing.”
“I wouldn’t say that Laa is meant to be here. I’m as sure as that as I am that I was meant to be here” Rebecca said.
“Sister, you look brand new. I’m so happy for you, please tell me all about what happened. Start to finish” I sat in a hanging swing with Jones.
“Good, while you two are talking about that I can go see Scarlett.”
“I thought Scarlett was in the Faye world” I was confused.
“She is, that’s where I’m going.”
“Dylan, I think you should wait” Rebecca suggested.
“I take it she found out” I referred to the job situation.
“Pft. That’s the least of it” Dylan crossed her arms, “I want to go before Lucky finds out. I want to be able to look her in the eye and tell her he had no idea I was going.” Danny and Suke came in carrying our luggage that was mainly all the supplies I had time to pack.
“Danny, do you know how to get to the Faye world from here?” Dylan asked him before he set the suitcases he was carrying down.
“I think so. Why?” He eyed her suspiciously.
“Take me.”
“Take you? Now? Are you mad?” Danny looked at her like she had an extra head.
“If you don’t take me, I’ll go by myself.”
“I don’t know what’s going on, but I will take you” Suke stepped in.
“No, I feel bad, you just got here” Dylan said nicely to him.
“It’s better I take you; it’ll be quicker if I take you” Suke insisted.
“Danny, you should go with them” Rebecca said in such a way that made it clear it wasn’t a suggestion.
Danny looked concerned, “mother of Christ.”
