Marie’s Point of View
Guiz and I were on our way to get Scarlett, “what if she doesn’t want to go?”
“Don’t even say that out loud” Guiz shook his head, “I guess I’ll have to take Dylan’s lead and not ask. She just kinda told me to get Scarlett and meet them in the old birthing suite.”
“What do you think it’s about?” I asked nervously.
“I have no idea, it’s nothing good I know that. Dylan did not sound happy.” We pulled into the factory that also had Scarlett’s studio in it. I felt queasy when we walked in, Guiz was right nothing good was going to come of this. Scarlett had been acting weird lately, but I couldn’t imagine that would make Dylan come here like this. Something had to have set her off Danny and Suke were coming to. No, this could not be good. I took my first sigh of relief when I saw Scarlett cutting fabric. At least we weren’t going to have to hunt her down and keep Dylan waiting, I knew she didn’t want to be away from Jones and Rowan one second longer than she had to be.
She looked startled when she saw us walking towards her, “hey…. What are you guys doing here?”
“Looking for you, cous. Let’s take a ride.”
“That sounds like fun Guiz but I’m busy” she said her new normal, snippy tone.
“It wasn’t a question Dylan is on her way here to see you. C’mon, we have to meet her in the old birthing suite” he wasn’t giving her a choice.
Scarlett groaned and rolled her eyes, “I’m sure Lucky asked her to come talk to me.”
“Do you honestly think she would leave Jones to come here to talk about your husband, I doubt it” I said her, I probably shouldn’t have but it slipped out.
“Fine, let’s go.”
Danny’s Point of View
“Is it working?” Dylan asked me, I was trying to use my phone as a stopwatch to keep track of how long we had been gone.
“I think so, it doesn’t seem like time sped up or slowed down. It certainly feels like it stopped since we got here though.” I kept a watchful eye on the timer. The last thing any of us needed was to be stuck in a time vacuum. Rowan would just love that.
“Are you sure you don’t want us to wait out there?” Suke nodded towards the door we came in.
“No, I’m not saying anything I wouldn’t say in front of you guys. Besides, it’s not like you guys wouldn’t hear what was being said if you were outside.”
“Still, I think it’s better if we wait outside when Scarlett gets here, she may have an easier time talking if it’s only the two of you” Suke reasoned.
“For what it’s worth I agree with Suke, neither of you need an audience” I was worried, Dylan looked worried and Suke, well you never could tell with him. His expression never changed, he looked the same as he always does no matter if he was beheading someone or playing cards.
“Here they come” Suke stood up, I followed him out the door and quietly shut it behind me. Suke and I stood silently on the other side of it, listening intently. I was sure I was going to have to pull Dylan off Scarlett. Imagine explaining that to Lucky, my stomach knotted up at the thought.
“What’s up, D, what’s so important that you had to come here and pull me away from my work?”
“That. That right there. What the hell is going on with you, Scarlett?”
“Nothing. Nothing at all, I’m busy. I don’t know how many times I’ve told Lucky that. Sorry he sent you all the way here for me to tell you the same thing.”
“Lucky didn’t send me here, as a matter of fact he didn’t know I was coming here. This has nothing to do with Lucky and everything to do with you and this brand new, holier than thou attitude you’ve got suddenly.”
“So, you’re jealous of my career too?” Scarlett snapped at Dylan. If she had said that to me I would’ve happily pointed out that a designer is only as good as her last collection.
“Jealous? You’re kidding, right?” Dylan sounded taken aback.
“You might not be jealous of my career because you’re more than happy being a trophy wife to King Rowan but you’re jealous of the attention it takes away from you. Damn, your as bad as Lucky. Can’t you just be grateful of all the things I’ve done for you and let me get my business up and running?”
“All the things you’ve done for me? I didn’t realize you were keeping score!” I couldn’t tell if Dylan was angrier or hurt, she didn’t do well with either one.
“I’m not but it’s hard not to notice, if it wasn’t for me, you wouldn’t have anything. I was your friend when nobody else wanted anything to do with you. Even your jewelry business came from me, not that you do much with it.” I saw Suke’s jaw clench and the knot I my stomach got tighter.
“Scarlett, you better watch what you say to me next” Dylan warned her, her voice was flat.
“What? Does the truth hurt Dylan? You wouldn’t even have your baby if it wasn’t for me! So, you better watch what you say to me, how about that.”
“Are you gonna take him from me, Scarlett!? Is that what the f**k you’re saying!” Dylan sounded primal, like only a mother could when she perceives a threat to her baby. Animal or otherwise, Suke burst into the room.
“That’s enough!” He roared in Scarlett’s face, Marie and Guiz were in the room in an instant. “Scarlett, you do not get to hold her son over her head and passively suggest that he can be taken away from her too.”
“That’s not what I meant, and you don’t get to yell at me like that!” Scarlett boldly said to him. I have no idea where she got her courage, if Suke wanted a piece of her there was nothing any of us could do to keep that from happening.
“I will speak to you however I please, and that is exactly what you were implying. You have become a snotty brat and I have had enough of it. You cannot be so foolish to believe, after all you’ve seen to honestly think that Dylan is who she is because of you. You’ve got it backwards young lady; Dylan was always meant to be who she was and have what she has. It was your fate that was riding on her coattails.” We were all stunned by what Suke said, none more than Scarlett herself. “You think it was a coincidence that you and your family went from the Faye world to house across the street from one of the most powerful witches to ever exist!?” Suke laughed wickedly in her face. “It’s you that would be and have nothing without her! You should be beholden to her like you expect her to be to you.”
“You’re lying! You’re only saying that because you’re with Laa!” Scarlett shot back.
“Suke’s right, that’s enough. Let’s go before things get any worse” Guiz got between Scarlett and Suke and started moving her towards the door.
Marie started towards the door, but she turned around, “Dylan, I carried Jones so if anyone could take the credit for him, it’s me” she said defiantly, shooting Scarlett a very nasty look. “Which I never, ever would. He is your and Rowan’s baby, through and through and nobody can take him away from you. I would stand shoulder to shoulder with you if anyone dared to try.” She squeezed Dylan’s hand and walked out with Scarlett and Guiz.
“Mother of Christ” I said as I fell against the wall, “that couldn’t have gone worse.”
“Dylan, please accept my apology. I fear I made thigs worse” Suke bowed his head to her.
I quickly intervened, “no, Scarlett and her attitude made things worse. What was all that you said to her?” I asked so Dylan wouldn’t have to.
“It’s not my tale to tell. I’ve already said too much but as I told you before; the truth always comes to the surface. I’ve lived many lives and one of the things I’ve learned throughout my time is the universe doesn’t like secrets. It conspires to reveal the truth, to lead you to it.”
“Let’s go, there’s nothing here for us” Dylan looked around the room that her son was born in, “I want to hold my baby.”
Guiz’s Point of View
I stood back some and watched grandma fuss in her garden, this day already sucked. There was no point dragging it to another day.
“Are you just going to stand there and watch me like some creep or are you going to come over here?” Grandma asked me, still with her back to me.
“I’m not a creep, well most of the time I’m not. I just came to tell you that Marie and I are taking off for a while. I don’t know when we’ll be back.”
“Okay. Are you going to tell me what’s going on, or are you going to leave me with my guesses?” She turned to face me.
“Dylan came to talk to Scarlett about how she’s been acting lately.”
“Oh dear, I already don’t like where this is going.”
“Suke and Danny came with her, they stayed outside. Until they didn’t. It was really bad Grandma.”
“Is everyone alright!?” She said with worry.
“Physically, yes but that’s about it. Scarlett actually told Dylan she wouldn’t be s**t without her. She even went as far to say Dylan owed having Jones to her.”
“She didn’t!” The color drained from her face.
“She did, then in the next breath she alluded that she could take him away. That’s how we all took it anyway, especially Suke. He flew in the room and told Scarlett she had it backwards, it was her that needed Dylan. She was even disrespectful to him if you can believe that. Anyway, Marie and I decided this is a good time to take a trip, somewhere.”
“I understand. Please give Marie my love. I’ll miss you both terribly.” She hugged me goodbye, “here’s hoping everything has settled down and is back to normal by the time you two get back.”
“Finger’s crossed” I smiled and hugged her back. It was a nice thought, but I didn’t think it was true.
