Boom’s Point of View I have seen some horrible things in my time, but I was still shaken after what I saw in the small hut. I was in awe of Lucky and how he was able to help Dewi I honestly don’t know how he did it, but it was inspiring. Two things were clear to me, one, he had been wasting his talents by not practicing medicine and I was going to do whatever needed to be done to make sure his idea of turning the hostel into a clinic happened. Even if I had to resort to behavior I normally wouldn’t. Bastien and Rowan were carrying Dewi on the makeshift stretcher Lucky built, Rebecca and Lucky walked on either side of her, and I carried Eka back to the treehouse. Dewi’s mother stayed behind with Dewi’s younger siblings, Rowan made sure she understood she could come to the house as much and as often as she could. “Are you sure it’s no trouble?” Eka asked again as the treehouse came into sight. “Eka, I’m sure” Rowan reassured her again. “The trouble would come if Dewi didn’t come here. My wife would strangle me if Dewi wasn’t somewhere comfortable after what she’s been through. Believe me.” “She sure would! My moneys on Dylan” Lucky laughed; we all did. “Speaking of Dylan, look who’s up” Bastien said when he saw Dylan and Danny looking out the front door. “You know what they say, you can’t keep a good woman down” Rebecca added. “No, you can’t” I could hear Rowan’s admiration for Dylan in his voice. “Oh no, what happened?” Dylan gasped when we walked past her and Danny while they held the double front doors open for us. Lucky quickly explained what happened before he asked her what bedroom we should take Dewi to. “What ever one you want! What can I do to help?” “Go sit down and rest. You had a hell of a day yourself” Lucky responded. “Babe, give Rebecca one of your clean t-shirts to change Dewi into” Dylan said as she and Danny watched them carefully carry her upstairs. I set Eka down, she walked over to Danny and hugged him tightly. “I prayed for a miracle, and you showed up!” she patted his cheek. “No, Lucky is the miracle” Danny hugged her back. “You can say that again, Danny, you should have seen him. He was incredible!” I still couldn’t believe what he accomplished. I was proud to call him a brother. “He was!” Eka gushed, “he saved Dewi. But I can see he’s a good man anyway.” “He really is, nobody is better than Lucky” Dylan agreed. We heard a loud car coming down the dirt road. “Now what?” Danny asked, “that cannot possibly be Laa and Suke already.” “It’s probably Budi, he’s bringing our bags to us” I told him. “I completely forgot about our bags, that cooler full of blood will come in handy for us and Dewi, if she needs a transfusion. I’m sure we have her blood type somewhere in there” Danny and I started for the door when Bastien came hurrying down the stairs. “Is that Budi that just pulled up outside?” He asked. “We think so, why?” Danny answered. “I need to ask him how to get to the closest hospital. Obviously Dewi isn’t out of the woods yet, Lucky asked me to go “borrow” supplies.” “No, no. Budi will take you, it’s better that way” Eka volunteered Budi’s services, not that I thought he wouldn’t insist on helping us on his own merit. “I’m going with you” Danny stated. “So am I, we can charm the staff into giving us what we need instead of bulldozing our way into getting what he needs” I looked at Danny, squashing any thoughts he had of wreaking havoc. “Let’s bring our bags in.” Dylan’s Point of View “Eka, please make yourself at home” I gestured for her to sit down on the couch. “I’m okay” she rang her hands. “You are not okay; you look exhausted and sick with worry. Please sit down” I started to make her a glass of lemon water, she started to object but Rowan came downstairs in a panic. “The baby’s not in his crib!!!” “He’s right there, babe” I pointed to the crib we kept downstairs for his naps. “I wanted him downstairs with Danny and I in case he woke up.” Rowan clutched his chest and fell into a chair near Jones’s crib “Jesus, if I was mortal, I would’ve had a heart attack.” “It’s been a long day” Eka said as she took her water from me, “all of you have done so much for us. Tomorrow, I make Jajan Pasar, special just for you, some of you. Ha-ha.” “You don’t have to do that Eka. You don’t have to do anything to thank us, you’ve all been so kind to us. We want to help, none of you owe us anything.” I hoped she believed me, and I was really hoping my next question wouldn’t terrify her. “Eka, will it upset you if I make drinks for Lucky, Rowan, and me?” “No child, not at all. I am a guest in your house. Do what you please.” “You understand we drink blood?” Rowan followed up. “Ha-ha, yes, I understand. We are friends, friends accept you how you are.” “They do, don’t they?” I smiled warmly at her as I began to empty the cooler Danny brought in before they left on their mission that he was taking very seriously. I poured blood for us and made a pitcher of lemon and coconut water after Eka explained an easy way to get the water from a young coconut that I made Rowan go get off a tree. I raised my glass of blood to my lips when Rebecca stopped me. “Don’t drink that yet! I have something for you to add to it” Rebecca said, carrying a hollowed-out coconut shell. “This will help your head and it’ll get your strength up and then I want you and Rowan to take the baby and go to bed, it’ll probably make you sleepy. The same goes for you too Eka. There is another bedroom, you need your rest. Lucky or I will wake you if Dewi needs you, you’ll be no use to her or anyone else if you don’t take care of yourself.” Rebecca made it very clear that she wasn’t going to take no for answer. She stirred the powdered mixture into my glass and put the pitcher of water and Lucky’s drink on a tray to take upstairs. I carried Jones and Rowan scooped Eka up in his arms before she had a chance to insist that she walk up the stairs herself. I didn’t go in the room to say goodnight to Lucky because I knew he was busy monitoring Dewi, so I decided to wait until morning to thank him for being such a wonderful friend and an even better man. Rowan and I said goodnight to Eka and Rebecca and went to our room. “I love you” he cupped my face in his hands and rested his forehead against mine after I laid Jones down in his crib. “I love you, I’m so sorry you went through hell today” I whispered to him. “Never a dull moment with us, beloved. Drink your drink and get in that bed so I can hold you.” I drank it all in one gulp and crawled into bed. Rowan curled up next to me and stroked my hair like he always did to help me fall asleep, I never felt safer or more at home than I did when I was in his arms. I woke up when I heard Jones giggling in his crib, I was shocked when I saw the sun coming in our room, I thought he was waking up for his middle of the night playdate with Daddy. I had no idea what time or day it was, I felt like I had been sleeping for days. “Come on cutie, Daddy must be making you a big boy breakfast” I smelled something wonderful that I knew I couldn’t eat coming from downstairs. I quickly changed his diaper and headed down, Jones blew raspberries and wiggle kicked the whole way. “There’s my beautiful babies!” Rebecca exclaimed when she saw us on the stairs. I felt my whole face smile when I saw a house full of people. Bastien and Rebecca were cutting fruit, Danny and Boom were drinking coffee with Budi at the table while Eka helped Rowan cook. “Good morning my loves” Rowan met us at the bottom of the stairs, kissing us both. He raised the plate he had in his hand, “Look Jonesy, Eka taught me how to make banana pancakes for you!” “Can I give him his breakfast? This is the first time in many moons I’ve been able to eat real food for breakfast, or any meal for that matter!” Rebecca looked happier than I had ever seen her. Not just happier, she looked vibrant. “Absolutely!” I handed Jones to her, “what time is it? I feel like I’ve slept for ages. I didn’t even hear Jones wake up overnight.” “That’s because he didn’t” Rowan kissed me. “Uncle Lucky has the magic touch because Jones was out for the count.” “I take it he’s upstairs with Dewi?” I asked. “He hasn’t left her side; do you want to take him up some fresh coffee?” Bastien said as he mixed blood into the coffee he poured. I nodded and went to the bedroom he and Dewi were in, he was writing something when I quietly walked in. “Good morning, Lucky.” He looked up at me and smiled, “hey D! how ya feeling homegirl?” “Brand new, how is she?” I sat down next to him and looked at poor little Dewi, she looked so small in Rowan’s t-shirt “She’s doing really well, considering what she’s been through. The guys brought back plenty of good stuff for her. We’ve got antibiotics, bags of fluids and thankfully heavy-duty painkillers.” “Thank you for coming as quickly as you did. I don’t know what Rowan would’ve done without you and I know Dewi wouldn’t be here if you hadn’t been here, you saved this little girls life. You are a wonderful man and an amazing friend. I just love you so much, please don’t brush off what I’m saying either. You always go above and beyond for everyone, and I appreciate you more than I can say. If you need anything from me, anything at all I hope you know that I’m here for you, no matter what.” “I take it you spoke to Scarlett.” “I did. It wasn’t the best conversation we’ve ever had” I said flatly. “Join the club” he looked so sad, it was probably good that she wasn’t here because I would’ve shaken some sense into her, literally. “She said she’d come in a couple days.” “Pftt, that means a few weeks in Scarlett’s new timetable.” “A few weeks!?” I was stunned. “It’s alright, I’ve got plenty of stuff to do to keep me busy. We’re going to turn the hostel the sonsofbitches were staying in into a free clinic for the people that live in the villages around here. We’re also trying to brainstorm how we can get the village elders to let us help them fix up their houses and Dewi’s going to need a lot of care before she’s back to being the healthy little girl she deserves to be.” “Well, I can’t say that I’m disappointed that you’re going to be hanging out here with us for the foreseeable future but that doesn’t make what Scarlett is doing any less shitty. I know she’s my best friend but that doesn’t mean I have to like how she’s treating you. Please know that you can talk to me, and it’ll stay between us.” “Thanks D, that means a lot” I saw his eyes fill up with tears, I didn’t say anything. I learned from all the big brother talks Colton gave me that sometimes the best thing you can do is to sit quietly and let people feel their feelings.
