[Fern] I knew who Hati was. One thing I enjoyed most in school was learning about famous wolves of myths and legends. His name meant ‘enemy’ or ‘he who hates’ and he chased the moon across the sky. In Norse mythology, the moon was a man followed by two children, a god and a goddess. Hati was supposed to eat them during Ragnarök and then feast on the bodies of the dead mortals. His brother was supposed to eat the sun, the goddess of the sun. He remained knotted inside me, so I couldn’t shift and talk normally because my human body might not handle his size the way my wolf seemed to.
