She walked towards the dinning hall with unhurried steps, but she realized that there was an additional person on the table. Just like her,Nora had never appeared in the dinning hall to join the family gathering. Not that she wasn't given the right, but she appeared to be more comfortable eating in the kitchen.
In the past, Auriane didn't understand her actions and deemed it rude and impolite, but today she clearly understood it,who in the right mind would eat comfortably in the company of hypocrites. Jam would turn sour, milk would longer have it bright purity, while the nutritious fruit juice would only feel bitter in the mouth. There was definitely no enjoying of breakfast on a such a table where its members made food tasteless, bitter and sour.
Ignoring her discomfort and displeasure of facing the hypocrites so early in the morning, Auriane walked towards the large family dinning table.
"Father, aunt Stella, Senior cousin and sis, good morning."
Auriane performed a perfunctory greeting to each and every one sitting on the table. Except for Alfred who ignored her as usual, Stella and Angel gave her a warm smile, but she wasn't touched by it.
"Little Auriane, don't just stand there, have a sit, we've been waiting for you."
"You sure know how to act all biggy, making us to wait for you, do you take yourself for the big miss or what?", Cindy retorted, glaring at Auriane with a usual hatred and scorn of which Auriane was used to. Though she hated Cindy for her evil schemes, she had to admit that Cindy wasn't as hypocrital as others. Never once had she concealed her hatred towards her, always bearing her fangs towards her.
Spitting every venomous words without restraint and humiliating her whenever she found an opportunity. She wasn't innocent, but just simply straightforward compared to Stella and Angel who smiled with her and schemed behind her back.
"Senior cousin, you don't seem like it, but you're smart."
Cindy stiffened at Auriane's cold words that seem to be piercing right into her soul. How could she not understand the meaning behind her words. It was short and simple, giving one the feeling that she was praising her for being smart, but she was actually mocking her. Reminding her that as an outsider she should patiently wait for the big miss. Even if she was younger than everyone present, she was still high above her who was an outsider.
"You...what do you...!"
"That's enough.", Alfred immediately cut her off but she wasn't ready to just sit quietly after being taunted by Auriane's sarcastic reply. However, she was forced so swallow her words when her eyes caught Stella's piercing stare.
Feeling indignant, Cindy bit her lips and took back her sit, clenching the hem of her skirt, while Stella smiled sweetly at Auriane.
"Auriane, don't be impolite, quickly take a sit."
Impolite
Auriane thought with a sneer at she look at Stella who effortlessly trying hard to portray the image of a gentle and affectionate step mother, while making her look rude and impolite. But she didn't mind, if Stella wanted to play that type of game, then she would kindly join.
Auriane's lips curled into a soft smile, parting her lips she replied politely.
"Aunt Stella, you're too kind, now I know where Senior cousin learnt her morals. It is indeed her luck to have you as an aunt."
Stella's smile stiffened and she had the feeling that a huge boulder had fallen on her head with every single word that Auriane had just said. She felt her every muscle tremble when she tried to put in account Auriane's words. She was clearly reminding her that Cindy's bad habits had been cultivated by her. Cindy was the exact image of her without exception.
She wanted to refute or even scold Auriane for being impudent, but that would mean admitting that Cindy indeed had a bad character and her as her aunt had poor education.
This wench!
Stella cursed indignantly, yet she couldn't use Auriane's flawless words against her, so she decided to brush it away and avoid the topic.
"We're going to start breakfast, take a sit.", Stella said a sigh
"Over here sis, I kept a sit for you."
Angel waved at her with her eyes filled of excitement, but Auriane saw something other than excitement and delight. If it was in past she would have rushed to Angel's side, acting as a dog that obeyed her orders.
When she recalled the times when she actually agreed to sit by Angel's side, ending up eating her leftover with pretext that the servants didn't make enough or Cindy and her brother had eaten her share. Angel offered her left over, acting kind and genuine, but it was only to remind her that she should stick to her status as a dog and her lackey. Of course, she never understood all this in the past and thought of Angel as her saviour.
However, today she was going to show Angel that the power of control was in her hands. She sweetly at Angel, but walked towards the sit beside Nora and sat down.
"Thanks for the effort, but today I'll like to sit with my 'sister' henceforth."
She emphasized the word 'sister' with effort to remind Angel that Nora was the epitome of sisterhood compared to her. But her words concealed the meaning of her emphasis, causing Angel to doubt and end up with no better conclusion but to take it that she was thinking too much.
' Why had this b***h become so difficult to predict?'
Angel felt helpless as she could only vent her anger in silence. Both mother and daughter felt defeated in front of Auriane who's attitude had rendered them unable to fight back and they silently ate their food, admitting defeat.
At least, for the moment
There was a long moment of silence, with no body taking the initiative to bring up a topic, so Auriane kept quiet as well. But she didn't have much appetite and could only slowly gulped down a glass of milk with two pieces of toast. She also helped spread some jam on some toast that she passed to Nora's plate, ignoring Cindy's bloodshot eyes on her.
At least, everything was quiet and peaceful until Alfred opened his mouth to speak.
"I've decided that Nora would live the White's mansion."
Clank
Auriane couldn't help but drop table knife as son as Alfred's indifferent words caught her attention.
"What did you say, are you throwing sister out?", Alfred frowned and replied.
"Don't misquote my words, I simply said she would be leaving the mansion to live on her own and of course I'll offer her a stead at the vicinity."
"Heh, you make it seem like it was a honour, but you're obviously evicting your flesh and blood with the intention of getting rid of her."
Bang!
Alfred hit the table in rage, gazing at Auriane with piercing gaze, eyes reminding her that she was an ant underneath him and she owed him some respect. Fear should take over her with a single glance at his direction, but Auriane didn't waver, standing on her grounds she leaned towards Alfred, looking directly into his eyes, telling him that she wasn't scared of him.
Alfred really wanted to beat the hell out of her, cut her growing wings and suppress her underneath his feet, but he knew it was obviously the wrong decision. If he acted impulsively, it would do no good to his life effort and everything he had done now would drain to waste.
Suppressing his anger, he continued.
"Your sister is carrying a child of an unknown man, if she insist on keeping it, then she would have to bear the responsibility on her own."
His words were logical with no single flaw that Auriane could refute. It was common for parents to send their children out to be on their own when they conceive out of wedlock or marry them to a man who would take care of them. Alfred seem to be doing a lot by providing a living for Nora, but he was obviously being cruel towardshis daughter, yet she couldn't refute or argue with him.
She couldn't also use other's opinion to make her father change her mind. Alfred wasn't stupid, if he made such a decision, he probably knew that it won't affect him in any way. And it was effectively true, no one would find anything amiss a father's decision to 'help' his daughter become independent.
Sure enough, Alfred was a cunning fox.
"If that the case, I shall follow sister!"
Auriane said firmly, causing everyone to look at her with surprise, as if the words just now didn't come from her.
"Sister, what are you saying, are you really going to leave me?", Angel reluctant hurried to persuade Auriane. Even if she wished to get rid of Auriane, she wasn't stupid to let go of her only stepping stone to a prosperous life. Even if she hated to admit, Auriane was good enough to help her climb high in the the social circle and outshine others, how could she just let her go?
