“Good morning Ms. Alforque. You’ve finally woken up.” He said as he reached the chart that was handed by the nurse next to him. The nurse then walks beside me to check on the liquid dripping via IVTT ( intravenous through tubing). I wondered why it is even necessary. Then the doctor spoke again.
“I’m Dr. San Ruiz, your attending physician.” he introduced himself and looked through the chart again. Flipping it page by page as his face changes its reaction.
“First, you were out for more than twenty-four hours now. And I’m glad that you've finally regained consciousness. Secondly, I’d like to congratulate you, you are in your fifth week of pregnancy, the first trimester.”
“Wait, did you just say? That I am pregnant?”
“Yes dear, you are. The problem here is that you shouldn’t be supposed to drink too much alcohol as it is dangerous for the baby. Alcohol, stress, and anything negative will endanger your little one.”
How come I didn’t know it? I was on the verge of rejoicing when I remembered something. I wanted to cry, laugh or be glad at the chaotic feeling I had inside.
When…
“The baby is okay, right, did I harm her?” I asked worriedly as I felt my still deflated stomach.
“Well, it’s still too early to say, we are running some tests, to make sure she is. Let’s just hope for the best,” he said and handed back the chart to the nurse and bid goodbye.
I was in a total daze at the news. Am I going to be happy? But what about my plans?
Dauis would sure be happy, but how about now? Will he still be there?
I was in deep thought when Mang Kanor walked beside me and held my free hand to his.
“You should rest, take care of yourself, especially now that you are pregnant.”
“But, it shouldn’t have to be there. I still have a lot of things to do.”
“Well, you will, at least for now. It is not all about you anymore.”
“But–”
“No more buts, okay, for now, just leave it all to me. All you need to do is go home and talk about this with your husband.”
The mention of home…
When he said home, all I could think was with Dauis, he has become my home now. But does he think of it the same way?
We were in bad shape now as our little game was over. But I should give him a chance, I guess, provided that I have conceived his child.
“Are you hungry?” he later asked.
No, I’m not. I wanted to be alone so I just nodded at him. So he stood up and said he would come back later. Waiting for the door to close, I touched my small tummy again.
“Hi, I’m sorry that I almost lost you. Momma didn't know.” I said while caressing my stomach, as if that little thing in there understood me.
I just hope that it did.
At first, when Dauis asked me if it would be high time for us to have a child, I strongly opposed his idea. Because, of course, aside from being not ready, our setup, and my mom’s case were my concerns. But now that it’s already here, I doubt if he still wants it, since he’s been treating me coldly lately and then that woman.
That woman…
I think I have seen her somewhere. I don’t know, but I have this strong gut that I knew her.
Somewhere…
Days had passed and I was now discharged from being admitted. I decided to have some time alone first. I'm not yet ready to go home and see them. So, I headed to Sta. Luisa’s rather than anywhere else.
A female companion at this time would be great.
When I entered the house, Marry was busy doing chores and stopped to greet me.
“Hi, you’re back.” She said happily.
“Well, yeah, I will be staying for a couple of days I guess.”
“Wow, that would be great then. I always wanted a companion here. I'm so lonely.”
Me too… I responded silently. I kissed her cheek and hugged her, like a child to her mother.
Whenever I miss mom, I will always, whenever I have time, drop by to see her.
Shiela has always been my best buddy and I always tell her anything that I think I need to convey just to lighten me up.
Marry’s different. I can always have this kind of bond with her where words are not of importance. Something like motherly love, or even when you just see her smile at you kindly, it's sure that your heart melts in her warmth.
“You have a problem child?” she worriedly asked.
This is what we always do. She talks and talks while I listen to her. I sometimes responded to her shortly and it was fine with her.
I sometimes thought of letting her go, and sending her freely. She was held like a prisoner living a comfortable life except for freedom. But mom had left a strict instruction when she was alive that this woman shouldn’t be set free. And it confuses me.
“Take your time. If you’re escaping from something, that’s okay, sometimes, we need to hide from everyone to console ourselves.” She continued.
This is what I like about her. She’s always understanding and never once demanded an explanation.
I looked at her and smiled lazily. Seeing how mentally tired I was, she took me to my room and instructed me to have some rest as she would prepare some soup to relieve me.
But before she left, she took my wrist and felt me from there, then said, “Take care of the life inside you, she is weak, you might lose her.”
I was surprised to hear it from her. I never told her that. But, she’s always good at guessing around. Not just that, she’s also good at herbal meds.
She then walked out after tucking me into my bed, since she insisted that I should lay down and rest. The long ride is not good for me.
So, I did exactly what she instructed because she seemed to know very well what she was doing.
Looking at her closing the door, I grabbed the wireless telephone from the bedside table. I dialed Shiela’s number first, it rang a few times before a female voice spoke tiredly from the other line.
“Hello?” I heard her say.
“...” I didn't speak, instead, I just listened to her when Allen’s voice beat in.
“Hello, who is this?” she asked again with a voice a little vigilant.
(who was it) A male voice in the background.
“....” I listened, but I guess she covered the mouthpiece before she spoke with Allen.
Just then, I decided to speak with her.
“Shi,” I called out.
“Holy Sh*t! Ale is that you?” she verified as she heard my voice.
“Yeah, it’s me.”
“My God, we are dead worried here. We'd been calling you that night but your phone couldn't be reached.” She said, starting to freak out.
“Hey, easy, don't freak out.” I smiled at myself as I can imagine her face on the other side. I can even hear Allen’s voice from behind urging her to ask about my whereabouts.
“I’m just okay. I just needed time, okay. Soon I will be home. For now, please tell dad and Daven that I am okay.”
“Uncle Alistair didn’t know about what happened, we chose to hide it from him, because… you know!”
Of course, I know very well why. And I am thankful that they did.
I intentionally avoided mentioning Dauis as it would only rip my heart into pain again. So I guess they already knew about it.
“Where have you been?”
“Having a vacation somewhere,” I answered, but when I suddenly heard a keyboard typing in the background, I knew instantly that she was tracking my location.
“Hey, don’t try it. You will only fail.”
“What?”
“You’re tracking me, I know.”
“What can I say?” she asks sarcastically.
“Shi, I’m fine okay, there is no need for that. I will be home in no time.” then I ended the call. I didn’t wait for her to answer because Allen would only insist on it.
The next thing was, I dialed Mang Kanor’s. He wasn’t there when I discharged myself from the hospital, so I think I owe him a call.
“Hello, Mang Kanor, I discharged myself–”
“Hell yes, I know. I was one hour late. So where are you now?”
“Having the time of my life, I guess. Haha”
“You sure are. So you okay now?” he sounded like a concerned dad to his daughter. This is what amazes me about him. He can perfectly change his moods with a snap of a finger.
“Yeah, I’m fine. Just having my me-time. And by the way, can you look at this woman who was with Dauis at his bar on Friday night. Please have it traced.” I instructed.
I must know how they are related, how things work between them. Because my decision about telling him lies in the situation.
After that call, I would just have to wait a few more times to get the answer that I needed. Just in time, I heard the warning knock on the door before it swung open.
“Here you go.” she smilingly places the food that she brought on the tabletop.
“This smells delicious,” I said and thanked her for preparing such delicious food for me.
“That’s good for you and the baby’s health,” she said as she blew it to cool down a little before she fed it to me.
