Chapter 56 - The Amulet
The land surrounding the lakes was not amenable to farming. The topsoil was thin and flinty, covering the slate rock beneath. Still, Daniel and the others made some attempts to grow the seeds they had acquired from the Mountain people and others at the Flats Market. The results were some scraggly looking corn that the racoons raided, stripping the small ears right of the stalks, some green beans that sprouted nicely, but were immediately eaten back to the stems by wild rabbits, and an abundance of zucchini. Soon they were almost as tired of the summer squash as they were of their monotonous diet of fish.
