“They didn’t ask me to fire you… They asked me to step down as CEO or end the relationship.”
Abby’s eyes flared with shock.
“Are you serious?”
I tilted my head. “Yes… I just wanted to be honest with you and let you know that it wasn’t an easy choice,” I replied with a hint of guilt in my voice. “And I thought that firing you was the easiest way to get out of the situation.”
Abby let out a breath. “So did you confirm the rumors? Did you tell them that we are actually in a relationship?”
I shook my head. “No, but they were convinced that we were, even though I didn’t admit to it. And they left me with an ultimatum.”
Her expression softened. “I’m sorry about that…” she said in a measured tone. “But it still doesn’t make what you did okay.”
