"If you don't fight with your best friend that friendship is not real." ~ Unknown Chapter Seventeen Petra was laughing when she entered their home oblivious to Elio who was fuming with anger at the mere sound of her. Elio didn't say anything he wanted her to see him and see the anger that he had for her, he didn't want to give it away before she could really see the anger. He wanted to see the fear that would work it's way onto her face when she catches him in the kitchen waiting for her. She had fifteen minutes to explain and if he felt like she was lying about anything during her explanation— well, he wasn't sure what he was going to do he'd have to figure it out when that comes. He has to think it through and think logically, he was dealing with the mother of his child after all and he wouldn't wish any harm onto her no matter the circumstances. Petra's heels echoed throughout the house with each step she took, each one closer to the kitchen just like Elio had predicted would happen. It was nearly three o'clock, the time Petra normally has her midafternoon snack which always happened to be cheese and crackers with grapes, things that Elio had already gotten out for her so that she could eat them while they talked. He might be an ass and maybe angry at her but he wasn't going to let her starve. If she wasn't pregnant it might have been another story but because she was and the baby was his child he was going to make sure she got the proper treatment she deserved even if she might not deserve it right now. Petra entered the kitchen immediately flicking the lights on a high pitch scream escaping her ruby red lips when she noticed Elio sitting at the counter with a glass of whiskey and the plate of food in front of him in the chair that was obviously reserved for her. "E-Elio, you scared me." Petra laughed nervously putting her left hand over her heart, his eyes immediately narrowing on the wedding ring that was on her ring finger. He didn't allow his eyes to stare too long not wanting to give her the wrong impression and looked back up to meet her gaze, his eyes cold and not allowing her to see the hurt he was also feeling at the moment. Just focus on the anger Elio. He told himself as her finger's begin twiddling with the necklace she wore around her neck nervously. Good, she should be nervous. He thought bitterly. "Why did you lie to me Petra?" Elio asked getting straight to the point. He wasn't going to greet her if that's what she wanted. Petra's face went white as she placed her purse down on top of the counter, her hand tightening on the strap. "W-what are you talking about? I haven't lied about anything Elio." Petra said shaking her head. She had finally let go of the purse but her hands were starting to shake and that didn't go unnoticed by Elio. "Don't act dumb Petra, you're a smart woman." Elio rolled his eyes drinking his whiskey and pouring himself another glass. Petra cleared her throat her hands going behind her away from Elio's sight. "If this is about the doctors appointment Elio, I'm sorry but you didn't even choose the correct doctors off-" "I called the place that has the name of your sonogram Petra, don't lie to me. Tell me the truth. Why did you have them delete your profile?" Petra doesn't say anything as she stares at Elio her heart hammering in her chest. She's never seen him ever look at her with this much anger their whole marriage and it was beginning to scare her she didn't like the way it made her feel. "Elio, there's so much to explain that I don't know how to tell you." She weeped tears immediately pouring down her face completely catching Elio off guard. "Hey, it's okay." Elio says standing up immediately coming to her aid putting a hand on her arm and tucking a strand of her hair behind her ear. "Calm down, take a deep breath and tell me what's going on." He pulls out one of the barstool chairs helping her take a seat. "Y-You're going to hate me."She cried shaking her head refusing his help but eventually sat down. Elio sighed. "Petra, please calm down." Elio left to grab some tissue for her, his head beginning to heart from her crying but he would push through it, he needed to know the truth. She was still crying when he handed her a tissue but it wasn't full on to the point where she wasn't able to tell him what was bothering her and what happened. "Thank you," she whispered taking the tissue from him rubbing her nose removing the snot that was starting to fall down her face. Elio nodded his head downing his whiskey before pouring himself another glass. Based off of the reaction he just received from Petra just by simply asking for the truth he knew he was in for a wild ride and would need a glass or more. "Can you promise me one thing before I tell you, please?" Petra asked looking up at him through tear filled eyes. Elio sighed. "What's that?" "To listen to me explain before you intervene no matter how bad you want to, please." Elio guessed he could give her that he did want her to be truthful and didn't want her to lie to him because lying would get her nowhere but into deeper s**t and both of them didn't want that. "Fine, I'll give you that." Petra nodded her head. She took awhile to speak, just silence sat between the two. Elio was beginning to get annoyed but he knew she was nervous her hands were still shaking. "Back in January I had a miscarriage at eight weeks, I found out I had a ectopic pregnancy, which meant the egg was forming and growing on the outside of the uterus. I was due to lose the baby regardless." Petra said taking a deep shaky breath. She licked her lips as she placed her hands on top of the counter to keep them from shaking. Elio's heart sank when he heard the words come out of her mouth but that still didn't explain what was going now. Was she not pregnant? He wanted to ask more questions but he made her a promise and he wasn't going to break it. "I had already told you by then that I was already pregnant but I was afraid to tell you the truth because you were so happy that you were going to be a dad." Petra said with a soft smile, a lone tear curving along her cheek. "I made it my goal to get pregnant again after I got the clear from my doctor that I was okay to try and get pregnant again but when I went for my follow up after the miscarriage she informed me that I had a U shaped uterus and I'm not going to go into much detail about that but she basically informed me that it would be hard for me to get pregnant and hold the pregnant into full term, but it's not impossible." Elio nodded his head not sure if he was okay to speak, it didn't answer his unanswered question but he wanted to give her enough time to speak and let everything out before he said anything, he owed her that. He definitely felt terrible especially since during this time he was spending majority of his time with Davina still and this was right before Davina had fallen pregnant. God, I'm such a terrible husband. Here his wife was going through something that he should have been by her side at but he wasn't instead he was off with his mistress who he ended up knocking up as well. "She gave me some options and it's from there that I had decided to go down a different route and wanted to make sure that it actually happened." Elio furrowed his eyebrows in confusion not quite sure what Pete was getting at but he again, didn't interrupt. Petra looked up at him for the first time and bit down on her lip. "Do you remember when I had told yo I that the doctor needed a sample of your sperm?" "Yeah, you never said what it was for and thinking back on it now I feel stupid now that I think about it." Elio laughed scratching the back of his neck nervously not really liking where this confession was going. Petra laughed. "Yeah I'm surprised you didn't. Anyway, I used that sperm for a surrogate." A surrogate? "A surrogate? As in somebody else is carrying our child?" Petra nodded her head biting her lip. "Yes, don't worry though the baby still has your DNA and my DNA, it's just another female carrying the baby for me because I can't." "I know what a surrogate is, I just. I don't know Petra, this is a lot to take in. So you're not pregnant?" Elio asked looking at her still trying to process the information he just received. Petra shook her head looking down at her lap. "No, I'm not." "f**k," Elio sighed running his hand down his face. He definitely wasn't expecting the bomb that Petra had dropped. He was at least expecting that the baby wasn't his not that she had a full on miscarriage, hid it and then got a surrogate behind his back. Sure he was dumb enough to give her a sample of his sperm but when she said that the doctor had asked for a sample He thought it must have had something to do with the pregnancy and at the time he was too busy fooling around with Davina and wasn't thinking clearly. But now, now he was and everything was hitting him all at once and he didn't know how to process everything. "Everything is still going to be the same Elio. The baby will be born in September, it's a boy and he'll be our son." Petra said putting her hand on his arm giving it a squeeze. Elio didn't say anything as he continued staring at the counter in front of him. He focused his hearing on the ringing that was echoing in both ears as he brought his hand up and gave Petra's hand a squeeze. ༺═──────────────═༻ When Alice and Davina got back from their little shopping trip, which neither of them bought anything, they decided that they would spend the remainder of the day watching romantic comedies and stuffing their faces with food until one of them tapped out from being too full. Originally the plan was for them to wait for Stefan and Maria to come back so they could order take out and hang out with one another but with Maria giving Davina the cold shoulder it was a lot harder than Davina would have liked but Maria did say she would be out after her shower so she would see if that truly did happen. Even though Maria wasn't talking to Davina at the moment, Davina didn't want to run away from Maria and have her think that she was afraid of her because she wasn't speaking to her, she might be scary when she was mad and giving the silent treatment but she wanted to show Maria that she wasn't going to let this stop her from trying to keep on having her talk to her. "I think she would love to go, she'd be crazy to say no." Stefan said shaking his head. Alice had informed him of what Davina was going to ask Maria, which from the looks of it he agrees with the two that she would be crazy to turn down her offer even if she was mad at Davina or not. "She might be upset now but that's just her she'll get over it." Stefan said which earned an eye roll from Alice. "Don't tell us she's upset and she'll get over it if you won't tell us why she's upset." Alice scolded shaking her head. "Why not? It's the truth! She's upset but she's upset over something so stupid that she'll get over it!" Stefan defensively exclaimed throwing his hands up in the air in shock at Alice's comment. "We don't know why she's upset Stefan! That gives us no help and it feels like you're just rubbing it in our faces." Alice said glaring at him. Stefan looked over towards Davina raising an eyebrow seeing if she was hurt or contemplating what he had said, Davina shrugged her shoulders. It was a little bit annoying but she wasn't going to start a fight over something so small. Yes, Alice did have a point but so did Stefan, if he knew why Maria was upset and wasn't saying anything out of respect of her she didn't blame him, that's his family and family comes first. It would be the same thing for Davina if Alice or Maria came to her about something that was bothering them and they asked her not to share the information with anybody. "Look, it doesn't matter okay? Let's talk about something else before she thinks we're talking shit." Davina said cutting in before either of them could say something that would create a fight. Alice closed her mouth whatever she wanted to say being forgotten on her lips as she looked down at the carpet in defeat. She didn't like not being in the loop of things especially when it dealt with one of her best friends. Davina sighed rubbing her thumb on her stomach. She was sixteen weeks today and she hasn't felt the babies move quite yet but she did feel very small flutters every now and then in her belly that sometimes she didn't even realize she was feeling until a couple minutes later. In the baby books that Davina had decided to start reading when she first found out she was pregnant she learned that she would typically start feeling the babies move around between sixteen to twenty-four weeks. Davina was nervous for that to start because she read about how some women say it tickles while others said it hurt or that it felt weird and they didn't like it but she hoped she didn't have those negative experiences and actually enjoyed it the only downside was that she had two babies moving around inside of her instead of one so she wasn't quite sure what she was going to experience. "Maria, don't you smell better!" Stefan teases cutting Davina out of thought and back to the present. Maria rolls her eyes flipping her cousin off as she passes by him to take the empty chair next to him. Stefan winks and sends her a kiss as she passes which Davina smiled at loving their sibling like relationship. Maria didn't look over towards Davina's direction something that she tried hiding that hurt her by directing her attention towards Alice who was talking about the many pigeons she saw while we were out and how she thought one of them was spying on us and reporting back to some FBI agent that had a case on her— strange, but that's Alice for you. She falls asleep to too many conspiracy theories podcast that sometimes Davina thought that's what Alice dreamt about every night like she was on an episode of the X-Files. "Okay Agent Mulder, let's think rationally now. Did you ever just think New York City is just invested with pigeons?" Stefan asked looking at her like she was crazy. Alice rolled her eyes. "Yeah, but there's way too many for them how could you not say one of them could be a robot." "Because they all look and act like a bird?" Maria said with a laugh. Alice shook her head refusing to fight them because it was going to get her nowhere. She was sure pigeons were apart of the government. Davina cleared her throat wanting to steer the conversation away from pigeons and the government spying on the public and back to what was important— at least, important to her. "Maria, um, I have a doctors appointment tomorrow at noon, I have a good chance of finding out the gender of the babies if you want to go with Alice and me you are more than welcome to." Davina said ripping the bandaid off. The room fell silent, the three of them all looking at Maria awaiting her answer. Maria kept a cool face not giving away any hint of what she was thinking as she nodded her head. "Maybe, I'll let you know." Davina nodded her head sinking back into the loveseat that she was sitting on with Alice and look down at her lap. She wasn't going to lie, Maria's answer still hurt even if she did give her a honest answer like she had wanted. She didn't expect to get a definite yes or no today but she still had hoped that she would have. The other three were talking about their days but Davina didn't feel up to conversing with anyone. She knew she was just feeling very hormonal and that she would be over it in a couple of minutes but she felt like s**t because whatever she had done really had upset Maria and she felt even worse that she doesn't even know what she did in the first place for her to act this way! If only she could read minds like Edward Cullen her life would be so much easier if she had that ability but unfortunately she couldn't. Shaking her head, Davina stood up from the couch stretching her arms up above her head, her back cracking from the stretch. "I'm going to go to bed." Davina didn't wait to hear their responses as she walked back towards her room area wanting to be alone for the rest of the night.
