It's A Rite

Davina returned to Tabitha's place exhausted. Unfortunately, she met a sight she never thought she'd see that night. "Mom!" The woman who was in her early forties and looked quite identical to Davina sat motionless on the couch without moving. Tabitha was right beside her explaining something to her. "Mom?" Davina called again, walking towards them. Seeing the duo were adamant on ignoring her, she walked to the wall socket and pulled away the TV wire. "What did you do that for?! I almost found out if Amelia Williams really died!" Tabitha yelled, glaring at Davina. "Hey! Don't blame me! I came into this house and saw my mother. Called her twice and got no reply. I had to do something in order to attract her attention!" Davina defended. Davina's mother turned to look at Tabitha and sighed. "Don't you have a TV in your room? Let's go watch there." "Oh, that's a brilliant idea." Tabitha smiled, grabbed the woman's hands and ran up the stairs. Seeing she was being ignored, Davina yelled behind them. "I also want to watch!" The duo didn't stop to look at her. "Why I'm I even worried? I'm damn tired. A good night's sleep should do the trick." She walked into the room which was naturally hers but because she liked to be around Tabitha, they shared the same room and bed. She had her bath and walked out of the bathroom clad in her pajamas. Unfortunately for her, the other two women weren't planning on letting her have a goodnight sleep as loud music suddenly sounded in her ears. "Is this accidental or a coincidence?" Davina frowned at her mate. "It's none of them. It's intentional. If you're doubting me tiptoe to the door and see the two women huddled up watching you." A tired voice replied. Davina narrowed her eyes as a hint of amusement made its way to her face. She pretended to walk into the bathroom and quietly rushed out. She snuck on the wall until she got to the door. Without a warning, she pulled it open and was met with two pairs of eyes. Seeing they had been caught, Tabitha coughed. "I think we came to the wrong place, mother." The woman nodded frantically. "I think so too. I think the way is the other side." "I think so too." Tabitha smiled and grabbed the woman's hand and tried to turn around but was held back by a hand. "Are you guys leaving so soon after disturbing my sleep and mental health?" Davina smirked and pressed down on their shoulders. Her mother however, pushed her hand away and snorted. "You still have the mind to act all lovey dovey with me when you've been avoiding me." "It's not what you think, mother." Sincerely, Davina had no explanation to give. She recalled something and turned to look at Tabitha. "Did you tell mom I was beaten by an unknown man three days ago?" Tabitha froze. She rolled her eyes seeing she was about to shirk the blame. "Yes mother. There's this case Davina and her partner were assigned, and it involves a werecat." "Werecat? Those creatures are evil and extremely cunning! How could you involve yourself with them?" The woman yelled. Davina bit down on her lower lips as she explained. "My partner and I had no idea it was a werecat. Also, the supervisor had threatened to revoke our license if we back out." "What kind of supervisor is that?" The woman asked in annoyance. Before Davina could say anything, Tabitha beat her to it. "Thing is, Davina actually challenged them. This case is actually a dangerous one so no one dared to take up the task. Davina had learned of it and called them weaklings. The director flared up and in a fit of rage said those words." Davina scratched the back of her head with a lewd smile. Why was Tabitha suddenly being a pain in the ass! "That sounds a lot like Davina." Her mother snorted after ten seconds of silence. "I was terribly upset hearing about the number of deaths this werecat had been causing. He kills two families a week. Thirty-two people every month. How does that sound in your ears?" The woman was about to reply when Davina's words recorded in her head. "Is this families, consisting of a husband, wife, daughter and son?" "Yeah, it's just in that order. Do you know anything about it?" Davina asked hopefully. "Yeah, it's a rite." The woman replied. "A rite? What kinda rite?" The two younger women asked simultaneously. "An evil one. Werecats use it to prolong their life span. That's why werewolves and other creatures hate them." "So it's not gonna stop?" Tabitha asked. "Nah, unless that werecat dies. They often do it in secret, then discard the bodies. If the police are involved in this case, then I doubt it's also for long life." The woman said slowly with a frown. "There's another reason? What's it?" "No one has ever managed to find out. Only a few audacious werecats do it." The woman replied and turned to hold Davina's hands. "The one involved this time is quite scary. Not only had he littered the corpse everywhere, but he had also gotten into a fight with you. Can you withdraw from the case?" Davina was dumbstruck. Although she expected the case to be a difficult one, she never thought it'd involve taking the lives of hundreds of people a month. She stared into her mother's pleading eyes and shook her head. Slowly, she withdrew her hands. "I can't, mother. It's better for two people to die than for innocent humans to be killed like animals." The woman held onto her hand again. "Don't you understand? You're at your weakest self at the moment. You'd only improve once you've found your mate, and from the looks of it, you haven't found him yet." The corners of Davina's lips twitched. "As a matter of fact, I have." "You have? When were you going to tell me?" The woman asked with a frown. "When he accepts we're mated." "Did he reject you?" "No mother, it's just a little bit complicated." The lady sighed. Her mother went silent for a few seconds. "It's actually possible to end the rite, but the last time the supernaturals joined hands to get rid of it, they had lost a lot of power. Some of us were left heavily Injured while a few died." "Isn't there another way?" Davina stomped her feet impatiently. "There was, but not anymore." The woman replied sadly. "Was?" "The only people who were capable of getting rid of it were the Golden Fur Pack. Unfortunately, there are no more." "Golden Fur Pack?" Davina narrowed her eyes. "Is an Alpha enough?" "An Alpha? Damn it! He's more than enough you silly girl!" The woman said, her eyes blazing with curiosity. "Do you have an Alpha's blood stored somewhere or what?" Tabitha asked in surprise seeing Davina get so excited. Davina drew them into her room and took her bed. "What I have is much more precious than an Alpha's blood." Before she drifted away to sleep, she turned to her mother and said. "You'd tell me about the rite tomorrow when I'm up."
