"How did you do that?" Dave asked gently, staring up at Davina with shining eyes.
Not only had she saved him from a disaster, she had also saved them from Gregor. "How did you become so powerful?"
Davina glanced at him. "There's no time to explain. Gregor's men are nearby. Let's head to the city!"
"The city!" Dave shrieked. "The whole city are on the lookout for us! They'd hand us over to the cops the moment they recognize us!"
Davina covered her ears until he finished. "As I said before, there's no time to explain!"
After speaking, she grabbed his hands and fled out of the woods with the men in hot pursuit of her.
Soon, they reached the road. Unlike what Dave expected, people handed things to them thinking they were beggars due to their haggard dresses.
"I've never been so ashamed!" Dave lamented as he took a popsicle from a young girl.
Davina stopped and glanced back at the child who was staring at him with curiousity. "I'm sorry kid. This guy here is a total psycho. Just avoid him in the near future."
The girl nodded and ran out frightfully. Dave had a displeased expression. The sweet no longer tasted sweet, so he bit down on it and chewed it. "You didn't have to degrade me that way!"
"Shut up and search for a motel!" Davina frowned.
Why was Dave still stupid? Regaining his glory would do them a lot of good at this phase of their lives.
Soon, they made their way to a motel and Davina paused catching sight of a plate number.
Dave who wasn't looking, bumped into her. "Hey! Why did you stop all of a sudden?"
"My mom is here!"
Before Dave could register the words, he found himself flying to the entrance of the motel. They were granted entry because Davina confused them with an illusion.
"Damn! You still haven't told me how you do that!" The man praised.
She glanced behind her at the man spitefully. "The moon goddess should've given me a more sensible mate!"
They had already gotten in and the loud music obstructed the man's ears, if not, he would've thrown a tantrum.
Judging from her best friend's preferences, Davina made her way to the washroom. From afar, she saw the familiar silhouette walking out a cubicle.
Her heart throbbed greatly as she recalled they had left in a sad note. However, he kept following her until she disappeared into a dark hallway.
Dave was still following behind her and seeing the way he was walking languidly, Davina knew the latter had given her out.
Walking into the hallway, she raised both hands and went on her knees. She refused to identify herself as someone might recognize the name.
"Why are you suddenly kneeling?" The man asked, catching up to her.
No sooner had he finished speaking did a figure rush up to them and grip him by the throat.
"I'm innocent! We're innocent!" The man yelled frantically.
Tabitha who was ready to gnaw him to death, paused. Both Davina and Dave had dirts on their face which coloured it black. Hence, the cops outside the motel were unable to recognize them.
"Dave?" She called uncertainly.
"Yes yes yes! I'm Dave!" Dave replied, resisting the urge to cry out.
Tabitha's grip on him lessened a bit as she asked. "Where's Davina?"
"Davina? Who's she?" The man asked, trying to keep the fear out of his voice. It was obvious that the man hadn't recognized Tabitha. Otherwise, he wouldn't have lied to her in a bid to protect Davina.
With a subtle smile, she pulled off her cap's hoodie and said. "It's me. Mommy."
"Mom?" Dave called I'm excitement. Then held his heart with one hand while the other found its way to Davina on the floor. "I had no idea you were the one, otherwise I would've told you Davina was right beside you."
Tabitha had also suspected so. She glanced down at the lady who no longer had her elegant temperament. "If I'm not mistaken, you only spent a few days in there."
"You say that because you weren't in my shoes." Davina huffed and got up.
The other lady scoffed. "The last time you said this, I stayed comfortably in your shoes for a couple of days."
"Can you be less annoying? I just came back from exile!"
"No!"
Seeing the two bicker, Dave felt he was supposed to step in. "Can you two please stop! If I'm correct, the cops should be outside and you two arguing here is giving us away!"
His reprimanding cleared their eyes as they stopped talking immediately and turned to look at Dave. Davina grimaced. "I like it when you act matured, but be warned, I hate it when people shout at me."
Dave was speechless. Why didn't she say that to Tabitha a few minutes ago? Or was she only referring to him?
"I won't let you two start your own bickering! I have money to make!" Tabitha hissed.
"Now what?" Giving up, Davina asked.
"They're cops outside. I feel they've surrounded the place, honestly, it's exhausting."
"Why haven't you killed them yet?" Davina asked in disbelief. The Tabitha she knew hated pests and would get rid of them the moment she realizes they're behind her.
"The opportunity hasn't presented itself. I thought they were going to fall into my trap and send some people in for.me to s*******r. Sighs, I'm s pitiful fellow!" Tabitha recounted sadly.
Dave was perplexed. "You kill people?"
Tabitha couldn't be bothered with him as she walked towards a room. "I've been in here for a couple of times. This room can lead us to the back exit."
"Won't there be surrounded?" Dave asked worriedly.
"If they didn't see you two walk in, yes. Whoever is leading the group this time must've made research about me. Not only did he find out I don't visit places like this, he also knew I'd sense they were following and set a trap for them. The front would be heavily guarded but he never would've thought I'd keep my pride aside and use the back exit. Silly humans!"
