Chapter 3 The Shift, Meet Sable

(POV) Amethyst

My alarm on my phone goes off, it's 11:00 PM, an hour to go before my first shift.

I won't lie I'm scared, they say the first shift is the hardest. Normally, your mate is there to help with the shift, but as you know, Desmond rejected me. I will have to depend on my parents to help ease the pain.

I put on my white gown with nothing underneath it. When we shift, our clothes shred, so we wear a white gown. I fold a dress up neatly to put on after the shift.

Amethyst, my dad yells it's time to go, baby girl. I walked down the stairs

Hiding my humility of being rejected, I smile even though it's a forced smile. I'm ready to go.

I walked to the Hollow grounds with my parents. Luckily, I'm the only one that is shifting tonight. We get to Hollow grounds and Alpha Alaric and Desmond are standing there. Wow, just my luck, the two people I didn't want to be there were standing there, even though I figured the Alpha would be there. But the look on Desmonds's face showed he didn't want to be there. For some reason Alpha Alaric wanted him there.

This is going to be one awkward night. Mom and dad lead me to the center of the Hollow Grounds. The moon is shining unusually tonight. The moon is shining with silver and purple hues.

Dad tells me to lie down in the circle. I lie there waiting, then all of a sudden I feel my bones breaking with the most excruciating pain. Tears start to fall as I scream. Mom says to relax and let my wolf have control.

And in less than ten minutes, I shifted, and my wolf, Sable, emerged: a massive, beautiful, snow-white wolf with eyes of luminous violet.

I couldn't believe how big we were. Sable was bigger than an Alpha wolf.

Everybody was shocked when they saw my wolf.

Sable how, I'm a Beta. You shouldn't be this big.

Sable laughed, Silly girl, we are special, very special. The Moon Goddes has chosen us to be as one.

My parents and Alpha Alaric shift with me for my first run. As we ran through the forest, I was so amazed at how sharp my senses had become. I could see things in the forest clearly. I could hear the animals from the smallest to the largest. Hell, I could see and hear the smallest insects that were crawling around the forest ground. My speed was so fast even the Alpha and Desmond couldn't keep up. I believe we ran for an hour or more. That's when mom and dad mindlinked me it was time to turn around and head back to Hollow Grounds.

Back at Hollow Grounds, how do I shift back to normal? Sable tells me to think about my human body. Even though being naked in front of other wolves is normal, I didn't want Alpha Alaric and Desmond to see my nakedness. I walk behind a tree and Sable gives control back to me, and I shift back to my human body. After I came back to the clearing, I caught something in Alpha's eyes. But little did I know that Alpha Alaric had an evil thought for us.

Sable and I didn't miss the evil twinkle in Desmond and Alpha Alaric's

eyes. I asked Sable what that look could be about. She said she didn't know, but she didn't like it. The look made both of us uncomfortable, but I didn't let it show.

The next morning, the exhaustion of the shift was eclipsed by the finality of the Alpha’s summons. I was eighteen, I had shifted, and I was no longer the Beta's quiet daughter. I was the purple-eyed wolf, Sable, and I was about to be presented to Desmond, the future Alpha of the Wildfire Pack. But little did the Alpha know, Desmond had already rejected me earlier in the day, Nor did he know I had accepted Desmond's rejection.

We headed back towards our home, my body tired and sore from the shift and long run. All I want to do is take a hot shower and climb into my bed. When we reached the house, I walked up the stairs to my room. I get my soft pajama's head to the bathroom, turn the shower on as hot as I can stand and allow the water to relax my bones. I get out of the shower and put on my favorite pajamas, I climb into my bed and let sleep surround me.

I woke up to the sunlight shining on my bedroom window. And the smell of mom cooking breakfast. I get up and walk to my closet and I pick out a pair of jeans and my Rolling Stones T-shirt. I walk down to the kitchen to see my parents in their morning routine. My parents look up when I walk in and ask me how I was feeling this morning.

I'm fine, dad, my body is just a little sore. He chuckled and said Yup, the first shift is the hardest, but it will get easier the more you shift. Mom spoke up baby, your wolf Sable is majestically beautiful. I never dreamed your wolf would be white as snow. White wolves are extremely rare.

Then dad tells me Alpha Alaric mind linked him this morning. The Alpha wanted to see me in his office today at noon. Then I remembered that look in his and Desmond's eyes last night after I shifted back to my human form. I left to go to the training fields for my morning warrior training. Even though they don't like me being there, it is mandatory for all wolves to train. After two hours of training, I headed back to the house to get ready to go to Alpha's office.
