Chapter 5 The New Game Part 1 - The Alpha’s Proposition

901 Words
(POV Amethyst) The exhaustion from the shift had faded into a dull, agonizing ache, the physical manifestation of the broken bond and Sable’s relentless, wounded fury. I stood before Alpha Alaric in his office, the heavy oak and framed maps of Wildfire Pack territory feeling less like a home and more like a cage. Desmond was there, too. He stood slightly behind his father, his usual arrogant posture replaced by a stiff, wary tension. His emerald eyes, usually so commanding, flickered towards me with a mixture of confusion and something that looked dangerously close to fear. The sight of him, still radiating the scent of chocolate and cherry, made Sable snarl deep in my mind. “Kill him,” Sable hissed, her wolf voice a low, rumbling vibration in my skull. “He hurt us. He insulted the Moon Goddess.” I pushed Sable’s fury down, reminding her: “Not yet. We need to know the depth of their greed.” Alpha Alaric, sitting behind his desk, didn't offer a chair. His gaze, however, held no scorn. It was pure, calculating greed. “Amethyst,” he began, his voice surprisingly gentle, the kind he used when addressing visiting dignitaries. “You have shifted. Your strength… it is undeniable.” He paused, letting the silence emphasize the truth: Sable was magnificent, a power he had clearly underestimated. “I have been protecting a secret, a legacy, all these years. And last night, we all saw why.” He leaned forward, placing his hands flat on the desk. “The rejection, as painful as it was, was a necessary political measure. Seraphina’s Gamma alliances secure our borders. But you, Amethyst, you secure our power.” Desmond shifted uncomfortably, but his father silenced him with a glance. “You are not destined to be a Luna,” Alaric continued, the lie smooth and practiced. “You are destined for something far greater. You are the Amethyst Wolf, the pinnacle of our defense.” He stood and gestured to a map on the wall, marking the edges of their borders. “The Wildfire Pack needs a guardian of your strength, a War Leader who can command our defenses. I am offering you a place of honor and immense power: the position of Desmond’s Head Enforcer.” The words hung in the air: Head Enforcer. A position of frightening authority, yet one that put me firmly under Desmond's command. I would be his sword, his weapon, forever standing two steps behind the throne he had denied me. They want to put a leash on us, Sable growled. They want to use us. Alaric mistook my silence for contemplation. “You will train the warriors. You will lead patrols. You will protect the very pack that houses the future Alpha.” He smiled, expecting me to fall to my knees in gratitude. The searing pain of the rejection was still a fresh wound, but now it was hardening into a cold, unbreakable steel. I saw the trap: stay here, and my power would be slowly chipped away, forced to serve the man who humiliated me. Be his weapon, and I would never be my own. I raised my chin, meeting Alaric’s greedy gaze, then shifting my eyes to Desmond, who watched me with cautious curiosity. “I understand the offer, Alpha Alaric,” I said, my voice steady, betraying none of the chaos churning inside me. “You want to secure your borders and ensure the Wildfire Pack’s dominance.” Alaric nodded, pleased. “Exactly.” “And you want to ensure that the power of the Amethyst Wolf—a power you did not create and do not understand—remains under your command.” I let the accusation hang in the air. A power I don't understand yet, I silently thought. Desmond took a sharp, audible breath. Alaric’s smile vanished. “I cannot accept the role of Head Enforcer,” I stated, my purple eyes locking onto Desmond. “You do not see me as worthy of being your mate, Future Alpha Desmond. Therefore, I will not stand as your subordinate. I will not be your weapon.” A wave of Alpha dominance rolled off Alaric, a desperate attempt to force submission. The pressure was intense, but Sable was larger than any Alpha he had ever faced. We stood firm. “If I am a tool of power, then that power belongs only to me,” I finished, taking one step back toward the door. My life in the Wildfire Pack ended when the mate bond was severed. I will not be caged. Alaric’s face was dark with fury and disbelief. “You dare defy the Alpha decree? You will be cast out, Amethyst. You will be a rogue!” “I am already a rogue in my heart, Alpha,” I countered, offering a tiny, genuine smile—a smile of freedom. “And my wolf is too big to fit in your pack.” Without waiting for their threat or their rejection to be formally issued, I turned and walked out, leaving the stunned Alpha and the conflicted Future Alpha in a silence that felt heavier than any decree. I walked home in a furious state. Sable told me that whatever our power is meant to be, the Moon Goddess will let us know when she is ready. And we will be waiting.
