Runaway

Running away. Always running away. Jamie sighed as she got up from the bed, still sweaty about the only dream she had for years. Her resurrection. Her Heaven, and then her Hell. Her eternal guilt. She had been running away from her past, making living in the present really difficult. She couldn’t stay in any place for too long, knowing that her old pack would probably be looking for her and also trying to avoid any other pack she may encounter. But she was getting tired. She couldn’t run forever. She went to the bathroom and had a cold shower. Being a part werewolf, her blood ran hot. But because of her vampire half, she had to live with consuming blood to satiate her bloodlust. Elise really fucked me up, she thought as she looked down at her arm and stared at her scars. Most of which she gave herself. And some others that killed her. But she brought her back to life. And you stabbed her in her heart, just when she thought you returned to her. A part of her brain reminded her. She had betrayed the woman she loved more than herself. More than she loved herself. She closed her eyes and she saw Elise staring back at her with her black eyes. And how it was filled with shock as black blood gushed out of her chest and mouth. Like a lamb looking up innocently at her trusted shepherd, only to be stabbed by the one she loved the most. She tried to speak, but more blood came out. Slowly, her eyes turned back to their original color – white. The one Jamie fell in love with. She remembered her hands reaching to cup the side of her face. Her eyes were suddenly filled with love and longing, just like when they first met. “Jamie, my love, I’m sorry.” And as her body went limp, her army died with her. A part of Jamie also died that day. She was hers, her other half. She shook her head, trying to forget the only thing she ever regretted doing. She gave her life back, and she took hers. She stepped out of the shower and dried her hair. She let it grow, hoping no one would recognize her with long hair. She stood in front of the mirror, staring at her own body. The body that Elise owned in all ways she could possibly think of. She was hers, she couldn’t deny it. And now she was lost knowing that she was gone. She prepared for the day and packed her bags. She had stayed in this city for too long; her old pack probably caught wind of her. Or worse, the existing pack ruling this city. She opened the door and came face to face with a man. He was looking at her intently. She knew that aura. He was a beta. “No need to warn me, sir. I’ll be leaving your city,” Jamie said curtly, trying her hardest to hide her inert alpha. She kept her eyes down to avoid any conflict. “You know you can’t hide your scent, right? Please come with me; our Alpha wants to meet an Alpha-gone-rogue,” his words and voice dripped with sarcasm. If she refused, this could escalate, so she agreed. She had her head down all the way until they arrived at the pack house. This beta was a huge dude, and all she could hear from him was exasperated breathing throughout the drive. Good thing it wasn’t that long, but it sure felt like it. He stepped out of the car and waited for her. She composed herself. At least all they know is that she was a former Alpha, not a part vampire. Suddenly, she remembered Taylor. The most famous Hybrid. The Countess. The One. At first, she never understood why they called her that. She thought it was because she was the first hybrid. The first descendant of an angel and a vampire. But it was deeper than that. With Taylor, peace between different kinds of beings was finally possible. Especially with vampires and werewolves. But of course, it’s still a long way to go. Some grudges are hard to forget. She took a deep breath and opened the door. The Beta had his arms crossed in front of his chest, glaring at her. He was a squared-jaw man, his lips formed a thin line as he looked at her. “Your… scent is different. Why is that?” He suddenly asked as they walked toward the packhouse. She tried her hardest not to snap at him because of his tone, thinking that the Beta had no right talking to her like that. Then she realized she was no longer an Alpha. You’re nothing ever since you killed the love of your life. She shook her head at the thought. She heard the Beta growl in a low tone. Any gesture she made seemed to tick him off. “I’m sorry, I’m not shaking my head at you. I just… Remembered something. I’m sorry.” She swallowed her pride as she answered him. She kept reminding herself that she no longer had a pack, and any wolf could look down on her. But still, her blood boiled with the way he talked to her. As they walked toward the pack house, she looked around their base. It was in the middle of a secluded place. Trees towered everywhere. She could hear water streaming on the north side of the forest. Birds were chirping, and she could hear winds whistling around them. There was ample place for wolves to run around whenever they wanted. Surely, a perfect place for any werewolf to live. A place they could call home. At that thought of home, her face came flashing before her eyes. She will always be my home. She was thinking so hard she bumped into the beta’s back. He growled loudly. She bit the inside of her cheek to stop herself from growling back. She didn’t realize they had stopped in front of a cabin. “We are expecting courteous behavior from you as a former Alpha,” he said before opening the door. A man stood in the middle of the entryway. He emitted power and authority, but he didn’t feel like the Alpha. “Luna,” the Beta greeted as he bowed his head. Shock must be written all over Jamie’s face because the pack’s Luna looked at her with an amused smile, but he also raised his left eyebrow. She immediately bowed her head as a sign of respect. She heard him growling in approval. “You may leave us, Mike,” he said. Mike, the Beta, hesitantly left her with their Luna. He then gestured for her to follow him deeper into the cabin. They walked in silence. She made sure to keep her distance, walking behind him. As they walked, she took note of how he looked. He was a slim, yet toned man, probably around six feet. He was wearing jeans and a white tee. He grew his brownish hair and tied it in a ponytail. But the side of his head was partly shaved. He had a short stubble on his face. He reminded her of a specific game character, except for the hair color. Though she never got to look at his face. “You’re not an ordinary werewolf, are you?” He said, breaking the silence. But he never looked at her. Not even a glance. She just looked at the back of his head and looked down immediately. “No, L-Luna. I’m not.” She almost choked with that word. Elise was her Luna. Her one and only Luna. It’s been a hundred years since her death, but for Jamie, it felt like it was just yesterday. They arrived at the end of the hall. He opened the door, and Jamie came to see an enormous library. But what caught her eye was the hulking man, hovering over a table with maps scattered around it. He was clearly the opposite of his mate. He was a huge, muscular man. Clean-cut black hair. He was clean-shaven. His thick brows were furrowed. As soon as they entered the library, he lifted his head. He looked at her. His gaze was intense. She stared for a second and lowered her head. She reminded herself that she was in front of the Alpha of this city. She looked under her lashes and saw him remove his gaze from her towards his mate. His eyes softened. He looked at his mate with love and adoration. And Jamie knew Luna was looking at him the same way. She suddenly remembered the way Elise looked at her moments before she died. She lowered her eyes and looked at her feet. Her heart ached for Elise. “Thank you, Wayne. You may leave us. I’ll see you later,” the Alpha said. Wayne, his mate, made a very low, warning growl directed at her. She kept her head down. As soon as he left, the whole atmosphere changed. The Alpha walked towards her. She kept her head down, not wanting to offend him. “You may relax, Donesa,” he said in a calm voice. Jamie snapped her head towards him as he said her last name. He just smiled even when she stared straight into his eyes. “Don’t look so surprised. Of course, I know who you are. But don’t worry, no one else knows, even Wayne. By the way, I am Alpha Grant.” He added the last part when he saw the worried expression on her face. But her expression changed. “You didn’t tell your mate?” She asked. But her tone sounded more accusatory than she intended to. He smiled sadly and sighed. “There are things that we are ashamed of telling anyone, even our other half.” He turned around, and Jamie saw two healed punctures on his neck. They were clearly healed, but there were black lines, or veins, surrounding them. “You… I’m so sorry.” That is all she could say. “No need to say sorry. You were once like me.” She lowered her head, thinking of Elise’s descent into madness. “The truth is, I wanted to ask you something. I want you to join my pack, as one of the Deltas.” Jamie snapped her head back at him like he grew an additional head. “I’m sorry, what?!” “You’re a powerful werewolf, Donesa. And you know that being in a pack is far better than being a rogue on the run.” “I’m sorry, Alpha, but I would have to decline. I can’t.” She respectfully declined his offer. “And what will be your plan? To run away forever?” His tone was serious, but she could hear his concern. “Trust me, you don’t want me in your pack. Can’t you sense it? I just don’t want to cause any trouble.” He stared at her, straight through her eyes. After some time, she averted her gaze and walked away from him. “What are you?” He asked as she reached for the door. She turned sideways and answered. “I am the Demon’s Soulmate.”
