Grant’s face remained indescribable when Jamie left the packhouse. No one tried to stop her. Even though she could feel them looking at her, she didn’t see anyone. She walked as fast as she could, eager to leave this place, when someone grabbed her by the arm, forcing her to turn around. The action surprised her, and her instinct took over her actions, making her bare her vampire fangs. She retracted them as soon as they came out. It was Wayne. He quickly let her arm go and pushed her away from him. One by one, the werewolves came out of hiding. They were snarling at her; their claws were all out, ready to jump.
A low, powerful growl suddenly erupted in everyone’s mind, including Jamie’s. Everybody backed off, and she continued walking away, never looking back. She felt Grant’s gaze at the back of her head, but she kept walking.
I have to leave this city before things escalate.
As soon as she got back to her hotel room, she took the bags she had packed earlier before Mike arrived. She left the room keys at the reception as quickly as she could. But before she could even shift, a gray wolf appeared. It was Grant, and he shifted in front of her. He towered over her, but she stood her ground firmly. His jaw clenched as she stared back at him.
“You’re a vampire,” he said in a very monotonous tone.
“I am; that’s why I told you it’d be a bad idea for me to join your pack,” Jamie replied. As she said that, his face softened. She knew that look.
Pity.
“Don’t look at me like that. Don’t pity me,” she snarled.
“She did this to you?” Grant quietly asked.
“Yes. She did. She saved me from my death. She…” Jamie couldn’t finish the sentence.
She looked at him, and he couldn’t remove the pity showing in his eyes. She hissed at him and showed him her vampire fangs. She closed her eyes to calm herself and retracted her fangs. She felt the tension around her. Of course, his pack would never allow him to be alone with a vampire, even when she was only a part of it.
“Please, Alpha Grant, let me leave,” she said, walking past him and dropping her belongings before she shifted.
“And where will you go?” That question made her pause. She’d been asking that question ever since she left her own pack.
“I… I don’t know,” she said.
“If you ever change your mind, my pack will welcome you.”
“Grant, your pack hates me.”
“They won’t hurt you; we abide by Queen Taylor’s declaration of peace between all species. They will have to answer to me if they cause harm to you without a valid reason, of course.”
Jamie smiled at the thought of Taylor and her royal family. But it faded when she remembered the struggle they endured, especially at the hands of Elise.
“Consider my offer, Jamie.” Then he shifted back to his wolf and left. She sat there on her bike, contemplating the words he said. She knew that it was risky to join his pack. Being in a pack put her on the radar. That would mean Rayne could find her and bring her back to her pack. Her old pack.
She decided to shift into her wolf, taking her belongings between her teeth, and decided to run.
She was about to bolt when she felt a tug and heard a gasp.
It was an all-too-familiar feeling. She turned her head toward the back of the hotel, hoping to see the woman she loved. But she knew that was impossible. She saw her die.
I burned her body.
There was a shuffling, so she went to investigate. The scent was both familiar and unfamiliar. With her heightened senses, she knew she could smell her. But at the same time, she knew it was not her.
She took a turn behind the establishment and got face-to-face with a woman. She was probably around 5’3 with long, dark brown hair. Her sharp jaw was tense. But what got her attention was her wide, green, and blue eyes, which were looking directly into hers. Surprise and fear were evident in them; her ragged breathing indicated panic.
Jamie quickly shifted back to human, not caring that she was naked, and using her speed as a vampire, she held the woman’s arm against her body with one hand and covered her mouth with the other. Her hand lightly brushed Jamie’s breast, and she had to stifle a growl, but her fangs instinctively got out as she smelled her blood. A familiar scent. Moonlight shone over them, making her veins glow. If the woman’s eyes could go wider, they would have. But Jamie wasn’t sure if it was because of her veins, her fangs, or because of the closeness. She couldn’t help but think about how their bodies fit. How electricity sparked on the contact of their skin.
“You didn’t see or hear anything. You understand?” Jamie tried using a spell on her and waited for her to go into a trance. But she didn’t. She just stared and shivered at her breath.
“It’s not affecting you,” Jamie exclaimed, “I’m taking my hand away, but do not shout.” She painfully retracted her fangs and removed her hand from the woman’s mouth, but she didn’t let go of the other. They stared at each other for a couple more seconds. The woman held her eyes with hers as if she were looking through her soul.
“Who are you?” Jamie started at the same time the woman asked, “What are you?” Jamie let out an exasperated sigh. How could she explain to a woman that she had tried to put her in a spell without sounding like a menace and that it didn’t work?
“Nevermind. I’m… Jade.” Jamie hesitated about telling her her real name.
“I know. And I also know that’s not your real name. I heard. What are you?” The woman asked again.
“I’m a hybrid.” Jamie simply answered. She wouldn’t be seeing this woman again, so why hide the truth?
“Part werewolf, part vampire. And you glow under the moonlight, and you don’t burn. And your eyes…” The woman stopped herself from talking.
“What about my eyes?”
“They turned white, like an angel.”

A peculiar lady was renting a room in the hotel. She signed her name as Jade, clearly not her real name. She usually left at night and then returned before dawn; that was her usual routine. Elizabeth kept tabs on her comings and goings because, well, she had this very intriguing aura around her. But a while ago, a man asked about her whereabouts, claiming that he was her relative, a distant cousin. He smiled at Elizabeth the whole time, but he had this scary vibe.
“I just need to check some details, sir,” Elizabeth said.
“There is no need for that, Miss.” He looked into her eyes, and somehow she felt obliged to obey him. It felt like a kind of power or authority; the truth was, she was scared. She gave Jade her hotel room.
When he was gone, Elizabeth decided to follow him. She just wanted to make sure that ‘Jade’ was safe. But a part of her was scared of the man and what he could do. The logical part of her brain said it was not her business, but the curious part won.
Elizabeth took off her shoes and silently climbed the steps, trailing behind the man at a safe distance. He suddenly stopped, making her hide behind a large pillar. She felt her breathing halt. She always prided herself as light-footed. Most of her friends hated her for scaring them because they never heard her approach. But this man, she made no sound, yet it seemed like he felt her. He continued walking towards Jade’s room. Suddenly, her curiosity was satiated by the thought that maybe she was overthinking things and that she was overly concerned for a hotel guest. She decided then that it was not her business.
She saw Jade sprinting down the stairs toward her with a bag. Elizabeth watched as she moved flawlessly. Time seemed to stand still as she stared at her. Her heart-shaped face had a permanent scowl. Elizabeth could tell she had soft eyes, but she always had this soul-piercing gaze. Her mouth was always set in a thin line, and her jaw was always tense. She had black, thick, short-layered hair that she always put in a small top-knot.
Elizabeth was staring at her neck when she noticed that there were two small puncture wounds at the base. She then heard someone clear their throat. She looked up and saw that Jade was giving her an amused look with one of her brows arched. Elizabeth felt her cheek heat up.
“Hi, good evening. What can I do for you?”
“I’m checking out.” Elizabeth couldn’t help but feel disappointed. She didn’t know why, but she did.
“Okay, let’s just get the paperwork.” She smiled brightly at her, but she was only met with a stoic face. After five minutes of signing and everything, Jade handed over the keys to her.
“Hope you enjoyed your stay! Looking forward to serving you again!” Elizabeth exclaimed their spiel as she walked out of the building. Jade stopped at the door and gave her a sideways glance, but she didn’t say anything. Then she was gone.
As Elizabeth was about to call housekeeping, she felt a certain tug in her chest, a feeling that something was happening outside. She hated this part of herself because she knew one day it would get her in trouble, but she ignored the sirens going off in her head and went out using the back door.
She saw Jade standing in front of an enormous wolf. But it didn’t seem to faze her. Elizabeth stood there, shocked when she saw the man slowly stand up and turn into a man. He was butt-naked, but Jade didn’t even move or flinch.
Oh, Gods, werewolves exist? Elizabeth thought.
She couldn’t seem to move from where she was, afraid they might hear her. She didn’t mean to eavesdrop, but she did.
“You’re a vampire.”
“I am; that’s why I told you it’d be a bad idea for me to join your pack.”
"Don’t look at me like that. Don’t pity me." Jade snarled.
“She did this to you?”
“Yes. She did. She saved me from my death. She…?”
Suddenly their voices became too low for Elizabeth to hear. She only got fragments of what was said.
“And where will you go?”
“I don’t know.”
“Consider my offer, Jamie.”
Jamie. That name suited her better. Then the man turned back into a gray wolf and left the woman standing in the middle. Then she dropped her bag and started to change form.
A white wolf with black streaks.
It was the most beautiful thing Elizabeth had ever seen. She involuntarily took a step forward and made a sound. Things happened so fast that she was suddenly caught between the wall and the wolf. There was no way to run. She stared at her, enticed by her. There was a pull again, but before she could react, her naked body was pressed against hers, her hand on Elizabeth’s hand over her chest, and the other on her mouth. Elizabeth felt a vibration come off of her chest when her hand brushed against her breast, and suddenly she felt flushed. She was baring her fangs, and her eyes turned white. Elizabeth’s eyes widened more at that.
She murmured something, but Elizabeth didn’t hear it. She just stared at her.
“It’s not affecting you.” Her voice was full of surprise. It was a softer tone compared to what she used when they were inside the hotel. She took her hand from Elizabeth’s mouth after she warned her not to scream. She retracted her fangs but stayed close to her.
“What are you?” Elizabeth asked as she shivered at the thought of what exactly she was. She sighed and pulled a blanket to give to her. She explained who she was. But there was a sadness in her voice. It’s like she didn’t have a choice but to be like that.
“Your eyes turned white, like an angel,” Elizabeth said before she could stop herself. She sighed again.
“Yes. I know. I’m sorry, for frightening you. But please don’t tell anyone about this.” She turned away from Elizabeth, looking like she was going to turn back into her wolf.
“Where are you going, then?” She gave her a sideways glance.
“Sorry, I didn’t mean to eavesdrop.”
“I don’t know. I can’t stay in one place too long. My old... pack might find me.” She expressed with so much emotion Elizabeth couldn’t help but feel pain, too. Her heart was moved.
“Then stay here,” She glared at Elizabeth.
“Not in the hotel, with me.” She quickly added. She didn’t know why she asked her that, but she knew she had to.
“I can’t put you at risk.”
“You’re not. I am. Please, stay?” Elizabeth didn’t understand why she was doing this, but she knew she had to. Jamie closed her eyes and sighed.
“Okay.”
