“Axel, how are you even calling me? How did you get through?” I asked, bewildered.
“I’m not quite sure. I just wanted to hear your voice on your voicemail. I didn’t expect you to pick up,” he replied, a hint of excitement in his tone.
I felt really confused by what was happening, but when I glanced outside, I noticed the lights dancing across the sky. Every time the lights dimmed a bit, the phone crackled with more static.
Could the lights be the reason he was able to connect? Were they a vulnerability in this realm?
“Why are you calling me?” I finally asked, trying to get to the bottom of it.
“Why did you leave?” he shot back, concern threading through his voice.
“Because I had to. You know I had to,” I insisted.
