Chapter 9

1623 Words
Alpha Duncan felt frustrated with Lily. He has been trying to discuss his decision to go to his fated mate, but she was having none of that. She refused to allow him to make such a trip alone; she feared he may not go through with the rejection a second time. So, she offered to go with him, but he refused. “It is bad enough going to alpha Axel’s pack just to reject his sister. I do not want to rub it in by bringing my girlfriend along.” “This is your life, and you do not need anyone’s permission to make the best out of it. I do not care if that person is a watcher or not.” The vehemence in her voice did not surprise alpha Duncan. He understood how much it meant to her to be free of April, and he could not blame her for it. Knowing they could not move on with their lives until he rejects April again, hung heavily over their heads. However, he insisted it was best to travel alone. When Lily sensed there was nothing she could do to change his mind at the moment, she saved the conversation for later. Hoping for a more suitable time that she could persuade him. “When do you intend to leave?” “At dawn tomorrow.” “Please wait for a few days, I still feel very weak and being away from you will also take its toll on me.” She pleaded in her most pitiful voice. Unable to refuse her second request, alpha Duncan agreed. He took her hand and started stroking it in an absent-minded manner. His thoughts were on Idris, who still refused to put down the wall between them. He did not know how else to appeal to his beast counterpart. Lily knew from the blank look on her boyfriend’s face that all was not fine with him. She pushed down the fear that always whirled up within her whenever she felt emotionally disconnected from him. Her hope to strengthen the emotional bond between them had backfired on her, for now, but she will keep pushing until she got what she wanted. “Is something bothering you?” “Nothing new.” He responded, not wanting to alarm her. He encouraged her to go to sleep, after which he quietly slipped out of their room. The only place in his mind to head to was the training ground. He needed to work off some steam. Some of his men were training with Blake when he arrived, but they all stopped when they saw him. He waved them to carry on and paired off with his beta. The fight between them was fierce, and the effort it took before he could floor Blake surprised him. Blake felt his weakness, too. After the first round of fighting, a dazed alpha Duncan strode off the training ground. He knew the effect of not having his wolf was manifesting. Blake watched him stride off, but did not miss the appalled look on his face. He gave an inner sigh and a small prayer to the goddess to please save his friend and their pack.                   ******** The Royal Lycan Palace The day after her confrontation with Isabel, April went to look for her brother and his mate after her training. She knocked severally on their door but there was no response yet again. It seemed to her as if they were on different planets and not the same building. She always assumed life at the palace was one of leisure but was quickly finding out how wrong she had been. Sure that they were not in, she slipped a note under their door, asking for them to see her even if it was midnight. As she turned the corridor leading to her room, she saw Isabel and her gang walking towards her. She nodded to them as she walked past, but Isabel pulled her back. “You thought what happened between us yesterday was over?” Isabel asked, yanking her around by her shoulder, which was still hurting. “Let’s see how much you can run your mouth now.” Said another female. “While it is true that there is strength in number, I think the right saying at this moment should be that cowards hide behind numbers.” April responded without flinching. “These females are all a joke.” she thought to herself. Having watched them fight, she knew she could easily take them down. After all, she was trained by the most ruthless fighters among wolves. Her father never went easy on her, neither did alpha Jack. The three of them mistook her silence for fear and they all attacked her at once. April nearly burst into laughter at their stupidity. She easily dogged the blow coming from her right by simply calculating their proximity to her, and swiftly ducking. The blow landed on Isabel’s face and April snorted at their clumsiness. The third girl gave an angry growl and went for April’s throat, but she caught the girl’s hands and retaliated with a resounding headbutt. Before the girl could recover, she gave her a hard push. The girl staggered backwards and stumbled into the other two females that were just recovering, and together, the three of them went hurtling to the ground again. April gave a satisfied nod and made to carry on to her room but was interrupted by a palace guard. “The king would like to see you ladies,” he announced. April gave a dejected sigh, while the panic on the faces of the other females were almost comical. She should have known that this would get back to the rulers, but at the time the fight started, her instinct had only been to defend herself. The look on the king’s face mirrored the displeasure on that of the queen. They had been disappointed when a guard sent a mind link to report the fight. Both of them could not understand what the scuffle was all about but were determined to find out. “Explain.” The authority in that one word sounded like a whiplash, and even the alpha wolves in the ladies had no choice but to submit.  “We were just helping our friend Isabel to teach April a lesson.” Blurted one of Isabel’s friend. “She said April assaulted her.” Added the second girl. The king raised an eyebrow at Isabel and April. He did not have to voice his command a second time. Knowing that she will be faulted if she said the truth, Isabel decided to twist the truth to her favour. She made her explanation sound as if April had been acting high and mighty since her arrival. She told the king that all she did was to calmly confront April about her attitude after training the previous day, but was surprised when April became physical with her. That she felt hurt and only wanted to retaliate today. When Isabel was done talking, the king turned his attention to April, who then narrated the whole incident from the previous day. “You mean you started all this because of Darius?” The incredulous look on the queen’s face caused the four ladies to blush. “I only fought back to defend myself. I wasn’t going to allow them to beat me up.” April responded. “Isabel did not tell us the fight was about Darius. She only told us exactly what she said here today.” Pleaded one of the girls. Isabel was quiet at this point. She knew her game was over, but she was not prepared for the repercussion of her antics. The king and queen had a brief conversation through their mind link and came to the same conclusion. They had to let her go. The queen addressed her. “Isabel, you have displayed a questionable attitude that should not be seen in a king’s representative, and as such, your appointment has been withdrawn immediately. Take the rest of the evening to pack your things. I will have some of my guards see you back to your pack tomorrow. You are dismissed” The four ladies gasped in shock at the queen’s pronouncement. Isabel left without so much as a backward glance, and everyone noticed she did not even bother to ask for mercy. She was fuming with so much hate in her heart towards April and all she could think about was how badly she wanted to get back at her. After she left, the queen turned to the other two females. “Your lack of proper judgement led the both of you into a fight where there should have been none. How do you expect me to trust you with the affairs of the kingdom?” They both hung their heads in shame as they apologised. The fear of being sent away humbled them. They were supposed to be sent on their first assignment in two days and did not want to be sent back to their packs instead. The queen dismissed them with a warning and then turned to April. “I am sorry you were attacked while under my roof. I assure you such will not happen again.” After the queen finished speaking with her, she went back to her room feeling slightly unsettled. This was not her plan, but it seems as if nothing was going her way. She came here with the mind to start over after being rejected; but her life was bent on taking a nosedive. She flopped down on her bed and buried her weary head in the fluffy pillow.
