Lily gazed at the setting sun from her window. Her eyes darted from the forest to the disappearing sun, but it was the activities going on beneath her that had her worried. It did not surprise her to see that the ceremony to join the neighbouring pack to theirs was still going to hold. Members scurried back and forth in their haste to meet up with time. Does this mean that all her efforts to stop this from happening fell on deaf ears? It is not as if she did not want their pack to expand. In fact, the opposite was the case. All she wanted was to become the Luna first, so that the other pack will meet their alpha as a mated wolf.
She was afraid of losing this position that she has worked so hard to attain. All the risk she took to be where she was today cannot amount to nothing. Her mind went back to how the dark alpha ended up and she shivered, despite the scorching heat. She did not want to end up like him.
She had carried out her duty to him faithfully and was happy to have escaped unnoticed.
Some may say she betrayed her pack to the dark alpha, but she did not see it that way. She had made herself believe that the pack would have fallen with or without her involvement. So instead of alerting her alpha of the evil plan against the pack, she had offered to betray them with the promise of a reward. A reward that will see her become the next Luna.
When Eva approached her to seek out alpha Duncan or his brother for a relationship, she had been sceptical, but the promise of becoming a Luna had been too enticing for her to refuse. Especially when all that was required of her was to be sleeping with either of the brothers to find out information about the then alpha, and then relay it back to Eva, and she to her father, the dark alpha.
She knew the pack had fallen because of the information she gave to the dark alpha, but she did not feel any form of remorse. She believed that she and her acquired alpha could rebuild the pack and become great. What she did not foresee was alpha Duncan developing cold feet towards her. This fresh development was a crack in her plan.
She examined this new crack in her carefully laid out plan, a plan that has held together until now. All she had to do was ride on the back of the primary plan of the dark alpha to destroy her former leaders. After that was successfully achieved, she can then step in to help him pick the pieces of his life up again. That was exactly what she did. She had been a wall of support after his family fell. Offering more than s*x, and even going as far as living in the forest with him during his month of serving the dark alpha.
Lily saw some children running around the main ground and hissed in disgust. She quickly made a mental note to make this place out of bounds to children when she became the Luna. A lot of things about the current state of this pack revolted her, but she was waiting for the authority that comes with being a Luna to fix them. She felt a tremendous amount of excitement rush through her at the thought of having everyone bow to her authority. Everyone but alpha Duncan. However the good thing was that when she becomes a Luna his authority will no longer hold sway with her. Meaning she can do as she pleases without any form of hindrance.
Just as she made to move away from the window, she saw alpha Duncan walking towards his office. Bitterness rose in her throat, because he chose to attend to some pack issues instead of coming to her. Noises coming from the pack entrance drew her attention away from the alpha, and she peered in that direction. An approaching entourage surprised her, because she was unaware that they were expecting any visitor. She looked back to Duncan to see what his reaction was, but he already had his back to her as he walked towards the main entrance.
The entourage came to a halt and she saw they had some lycan visitors. She could tell from their cloths that they are the king’s guards, but then her breath seized as she saw the female with them. The sight of April had her panicking. She squinted her eyes in a bid to focus her gaze on alpha Duncan. His reaction to his mate sent her already palpitating heart into an overdrive, and she used her palm to wipe away the lone sweat that trickled down her forehead.
Different thoughts attacked her mind all at once. She wondered what April was doing in the outlands. Could it be she has reported the failed rejection to the king and he in turn has summoned she and her lover to appear before him? Unable to come up with answers, she decided to send a mind link to alpha Duncan. Her panic hit an even higher level when she met a wall.
Anger and hate pulsated through her as she watched April interacting with a toddler and his mother. Who does she think she is to waltz in here and start acting like these were her people? Lily fumed. The obvious glee on the boy’s face reinforced her decision to ban kids from sight once she achieved her goal.
“So, alpha Duncan has chosen to handle this alone.” Lily thought as she stood up and made her way to go and join them.
She refused to cower in her room and reasoned that if her supposed mate will not invite her to welcome their guest, then she will invite herself. After all she was only performing her duty as the Luna.
Suppressing the pain she felt with every step, Lily wore a determined look as she walked towards their guest. However that look was replaced by one of surprise when the weather changed without warning. She released strings of curses as she made a detour to use the side doors instead of majestically using the main entrance. A fat droplet of rain hit her forehead just as she made it to the door. In an instant, the skies split open, and a torrential downpour accompanied by thunder and lightening was let lose.
The fear on her face could not even begin to match the dread in her heart. The late high priestess and Eva had assured her that the drought will remain until she becomes the Luna. But it looks like that spell has been broken and the presence of the real Luna was already healing the land. This cannot be happening she thought in panic. Aware that both Eva and the high priestess were both dead, Lily wondered who she will now turn to for help.
Tucking her anger back underneath her fake sweet demeanour, she made her way towards the alpha’s office.
***********
A dazed alpha Duncan walked his guests to his office. He was reeling in shock, and his brain was trying to catch up with the things that were happening. He was shocked at the sudden appearance of his fated and wondered the odds of having her show up suddenly, and right on her tail, a downpour. they arrived at his office and he offered them seats, however, the chairs in his office could only seat about half a dozen of his guests. So, he sent a mind link to his beta to join him, and to arrange for more seats when coming. While they were waiting, April thought to break the awkward silent by introducing her assigned guards. She was introducing the last when Lily walked in.
Knowing that there was no way she could avoid her hostess during her stay here, April had already schooled her mind for this meeting, and her entire stay here.
“Hello Luna, sorry for the unannounced visit. I did not mean to barge in on your pack, but I am here on official duty.”
Lily was taken aback by how April addressed her. She nodded her own greeting and welcomed them to the crescent moon pack. A knock sounded on the door, and the alpha asked his beta in. More chairs were brought in, and immediately after everyone was settled in, April went straight to the reason for her visit.
The three pack leaders in the room all received the information differently. Beta Blake was excited, because their pack and the kingdom at large will be better and stronger with the eyes of the king on all packs.
Lily was horrified at the idea of having April here for two full weeks. She made up her mind to have alpha Duncan reject her as soon as possible, but her fear was that it takes quite some time for the mate bond to wean off after rejection. This means she will have to keep a close watch on both of them.
However, it was alpha Duncan that was having the most turbulent thoughts. He did not know how to feel about the sudden appearance of his fated mate. He was happy but alarmed. The thought of rejecting her again made his inside ache. He knew he had become too entangled with Lily and knew he will have to resolve things with her before he could freely pursue and win back his mate.
So, while Lily was thinking about how to get alpha Duncan to get rid of April, he was thinking of how to absolve Lily of the position she has been vying for and install his real Luna.
