I woke up some time after midnight, slowly, like my mind was drifting up from some place deep. My eyes felt heavy at first, the room faintly lit by the small bedside lamp Elsie had insisted on is leaving on just in case.
The night had stretched far… longer than I had expected. The girls and I had talked and talked until Mama Florence finally came and forced us to go in, stating in a firm voice to go to sleep.
She’d even prepared a guest room for all four of us, and I still didn’t understand how she managed it on such short notice. Another bed and mattress had been brought in, pushed against the original one to make a big enough space for us.
