Wane’s POV:
“Did you know what Vladimir did when she saw Ann, sucking their daughters blood dry?” Mother spoke.
She asked me to meet inside her chamber after the incident with father.
I was confused why she brought that up out of the blue. My brows furrowed in confusion.
“Yes,” I answered, still.
“What was it?” Mother asked.
“Mother, why are we talking about the history of our ancestors?” I finally asked.
“Answer me, son,” she spoke in a firm tone.
I sighed. “Well, instead of rushing to help their daughter, he succumbed to the thirst when he saw the fresh blood. The smell drove them crazy,” I answered.
“Do you think it was right for them to feast on their daughter? The one who even saved them from the brink of death?” My mother continued to ask.
I am confused about how this lecture is going to end up.
“No! Of course, not.” I stood up and looked at the queen, fairly sitting at her living space sofa.
“Yes, but it was their fate.” She said. I furrowed my brows once more and looked at her with signs of confusion.
“So you agree, it was the right thing to do so?” I asked her back.
She fell silent. She looked at me with intense eyes, as if it was burrowing deep into my soul.
“You cannot fight fate. Everything has already been laid out for us,” she continued.
“Mother, where is this conversation going?” I asked.
“I just want you to know, fate, is beyond our control. Whatever happens, has its reason. You can control destiny, but not fate.”
And with that, she stood up and walked towards the veranda of her room, but before moving an inch further, she stopped on her track and faced me.
“You are dismissed,” she said.
Without further questions, I went out with a muddled mind.
What was that all about?!
I hurriedly made my way to my chambers and packed light. Despite everything, I was given 2 weeks to finish what I need to do in the mundane world.
I need to see her…
It was what was going on my mind the entire journey back.
I have time to read while journeying to the portal. The carriage has been prepared so I hopped on it and took something from my bag.
It is Vladimir’s journal. This has been passed on to the royal family from generations
Sol, Spring
Dear Mary,
I am writing this to you, for you are no longer with us. We are in deep regret for what we did to you, my daughter. We didn’t know why we did what we did. I should have stopped your mother the moment I opened the door to our house and yet, I rushed there to join her. We could not seem to fight the urge of being thirsty and your blood quenched it. We want to follow wherever you are now. We tried to kill ourselves… we tried to hang ourselves, jump off a cliff, shot our heads but… we cannot seem to die. What did we do to you, our daughter! We are execrable parents. We cannot even atone for what we did to you. You have saved us from the plague and yet, we couldn’t save you.
What are we supposed to do, Mary?

Sol, Winter
Dear Mary,
Me and your mother are in deep trouble. The villagers saw us drinking blood from one of the missing person. We do not know how we both ended up in this state. We have become animals that hunted our kind… but do we still call ourselves humans?
They are now hunting us despite this weather. The cold never seemed to bother us, we can even hear from miles away and we seemed stronger than we were before. How could this have happened? I just wish you were here with us. We need to leave the village and the house… but this held so many memories of us and with you. But we can no longer stay for they found out about us. We cannot seem to control our thirst yet. Whenever we are thirsty, we kill those who we see first, no matter who they are…
Mary, we are killers. I’ve killed a lot of my friends now… their sons, daughters and spouses. We tried to drink animal blood or eat the food we used to eat to get full… but to no use. We just throw it all up afterwards.
How did we end up as killers?
—
My hands formed into a fist. I get that they were the first vampires… but I just still cannot ever accept what they did to their poor daughter who fell victim of their thirst. She saved them, only to end up being killed by them.
I closed the journal and massaged my forehead. I somehow feel frustrated now more than ever about what mother said about fate.
Did she mean I might end up killing Aubrey, too?
I shook my head in disbelief of what I thought. No, I will not!
I have met a lot of vampires in this lifetime. For sure there are vampires who only feed on human blood and there are humanitarians too.
Like that family..
The one who was exiled from Sol because they won’t consume human blood and the public deemed them unworthy to be living rigorously and extravagantly.
I share their beliefs… but I was not able to protect them when they were banished. If only I had more power back then. I frequently visit them from time to time just outside of Sol. I just try to peep about their lives and listen to them from a far. I couldn’t bring myself to face them.
Flashback…
" A party cannot be a party without a corpse," John complained, lying on the carpet.
"Being poor is so terrible!" Meg sighed and looked down at her old dress.
"I don't think it's fair for some vampires to have a lot of squirting stuff and nothing else for poor vampires," Sam added, they can hunt a rabbit but is only much of a snack and cows are only for a very special occasion. Added humiliation was getting blood by hunting by themselves, but they rarely had the luxury of living, drinking breathing animals that they could enjoy, and when they did it, it was almost a particularly humiliating snack for them. It was a small creature that wasn't too much.
Her parents didn't seem to be around when I tried to visit them. Where are Mr. and Mrs. Lowell?
The days when fangs could be submerged in a wiggling beaver are over. Not to mention the crouching cow. Mr. and Mrs. Lowells was a humanitarian who believed that eating humans was not suitable for modern vampires, so even when the family lived in a large, well-equipped house, humans were never on the menu. .. Humans were an inferior species in many aspects, but they were viewed by them as pitiful and not to be consumed.
Her mother and father's commitment to humanity was unwavering, despite criticism from neighbors who felt confused about both Lowells' beliefs and actions. Vampires usually didn't care about the little human wars. They roamed the Earth long before humans and continued to roam the Earth long after their death.
End of flashback…
The Lowell family never thought of humans as their food. Sometimes I think we are the bad characters in a story for killing humans. Vampires have been know as ruthless and a killing machine.
Some play for sport and some for pure entertainment. I will no longer allow any of these if I were to become ruler of Sol. The war must end.
And I need to see Aubrey first…
“Sire, we have reached the portal,”
