Chapter 15
Aubrey’s POV
A melodic music started to play as I sat on the couch of a coffee shop near my condo.
I am with Cassandra who is still at the counter ordering her drink. I looked at her and carefully examined her whole appearance. She really looks like a model. She wears designer clothes and talks like some royalty.
I saw her turned to me and gave me a smile and headed my way.
“What’s up?” She asked sipping her coffee drink and sat across me.
“Nothing,” I said and shrugged my shoulders.
“Oh yeah, almost forgot, my brother is in town, I want to introduce you!” She said out of the blue which caught me off guard.
“What?” I managed to ask.
I looked at her.
“Yeah, well you’ve met before but you just forgot.” She mumbled that I could barely hear her.
“What? What are you even saying, Cass?” I asked her with my forehead creased.
“Nothing. Hey, I just want to introduce you to my brother since he will be staying with me for a few days.” She continued.
Brother? Didn’t know she had one. Well, I never did ask. I nodded with what she said. I nodded at her response.
“What’s his name?” I asked and grabbed my coffee cup and took a sip.
She gave me an eyeing look as if putting malice to my question.
I rolled my eyes at her.
“Wane,” she answered.
My heart suddenly skipped a beat. It was as if I was nervous or a name that I somehow knew.
What was that?
It felt as if I know that name but I know there are hundreds of Wanes out there!
I dismissed the thought and just continued chatting with Cass.
The past few days, we really became close, me and Cass. It was as if I knew her from a long time ago. Although, I could feel she’s got a lot of secrets hidden.
“Have you studied for your exams?” I asked. She asked for my first year notes the day before for her upcoming exams so I let her borrow to study.
“Yeah, pretty sure I will ace the test.” She said as if it was nothing. It didn’t really feel like she was bragging because I know she is smart.
She is way too smart, I tell you I still couldn’t believe she aced all her transfer exams. I saw the papers on her table when I visited last week. I should ask her to tutor me!
“Look at that guy on our left, he’s been staring at us for a few minutes now,” she said and rolled her eyes.
I looked to my left to where she said and I saw this middle aged man looking directly at us. When I looked at him he tried to avert his gaze.
“What a creep,” Cass added.
“Don’t mind him,” I said.
“Anyway, have you heard about the news lately?” I said to divert her attention from the creepy man.
“I do not watch the news,” she said and flipped her hair.
“Well, there are lots pf missing women and when they found them, they were already dead, mauled up bodies.” I had goosebumps saying that.
“Ohh…” she answered as if it wasn’t news at all.
“They were found mostly in the forest or at deserted areas. One actually happened here near the city,” I added.
“You should be careful at night then,” she said while playing with her bright, red nails.
I furrowed my brows and told her, “you too,”
“What? Why me?” She said.
“Well, you are also a girl,” I said. It was already a given point.
“Plus you are beautiful. Girls like you will mostly be targeted,” I said with worry.
“Relax, I can take care of myself pretty well,” she said not caring about the murders she heard from me.
This girl is hard as a stone. She didn’t even flinch or showed a sign of fear hearing about the murders in the area!
“Let’s go?” She asked while I was lost in my thoughts.
“What?” I asked. I didn’t get what she was saying. I was too scared to even open my windows at night even if I live from a few floors up. What really is up with this girl Cass? Does she mean she knows karate, kung fu or whatever to protect herself when she told me she can take care of herself then? I might probably ask her to teach me a few moves if so!
“Let’s go,” she said and stood up.
“Oh, yeah,” I answered.
I checked my phone and it was already past 6 pm. I didn’t realize it was this late already.
“We kind of overstayed at the coffee shop when we were supposed to be going to the grocery store afterwards.” I said.
She was going with me and buy groceries but I seemed to have lost track of time.
“We could still go now,” She said sipping the last of her coffee and threw it in the trash bin before we left the shop.
“Nahh, I will probably just go tomorrow,”
We walked back to our condo and we passed by the newly built building. It was dark since the building isn’t done yet. We passed the dark alley when I noticed someone was walking behind us…
Or following us?
Is this the same scene as the ones where the girls pass by somewhere dark and go missing and end up dead in a ditch somewhere?!
“Oh my gosh!” I exclaimed in fear when I felt the person getting closer as the footsteps loudens.
“Bother?” I hear Cass spoke
B-brother?
“Aubrey are you okay?” Cass asked.
“Huh? Ohhh, yeah…” I answered awkwardly. I might’ve watched too much murder documentaries in my lifetime.
“What are you doing here, Wane?” Cass asked the tall man in front of us.
I cannot seem to decipher his face since its quite dark from where we are standing.
“I came…” he spoke and moved closer to the light.
“To pick you up,” he said but instead saying this to her sister, he was stating at me… intently.
And there, my heart was beating like a drum.
Wane?
