Chapter 4: Proposal

1151 Words
Iris’s pov I opened my eyes, and I had to close them again. Light? There is no light in the dungeon I am locked in. My legs suddenly felt like they were on fire, and I remembered what happened last night. I used the hairpin that I took from my aunt and opened the dungeon. They were so hellbent on making sure I couldn’t use magic to open the door that they forgot something else. They forgot that you don’t need magic to open a door. Sometimes all you need is a wire or a hairpin. Since they had a party last night, it was easy to run off to the road. But what happened after that? I remember seeing a car and running there to get help. I opened my eyes again, this time slowly, so they could adjust to the light. I looked around the room, and my eyes landed on a man. Blond hair that was in a wolf cut and perfectly styled. He was wearing a black three-piece suit. He looked up from his book and then looked at me. “You are awake,” he said, and I nodded as I sat up. “Thank you for saving me,” I said, and he smirked at this. “I had my own selfish reasons for doing so,” he answered, and I looked at him. He seems to be sick, you can tell by the look in his eyes. His blue eyes were a little droopy, his skin was pale and he was sweating. “You don’t look too good,” I pointed out, and he sighed. “You should save that for yourself. You are pale and malnourished,” he retorted. I got to have a good look at my skin, and he wasn’t lying. I guess being locked up for years in a dark room can do that to you. Hell, even prisoners get time to go out and bask in the sun. “The bathroom is that way,” he pointed at a door, and I nodded. “Eat first,” he said, and I nodded. I looked at the food that was on a tray next to the bed. I picked up the bowel of fruit and I had a bite. I thought that it would actually taste good and juicy. But I realized that despite the food's appearance, I don’t have any appetite. I took a few bites just so I wouldn’t be rude to someone who saved me. I went to the bathroom, and now that is something I actually enjoyed. For the past few years I was given a small bucket to bathe with. So sitting in a bathtub and soaking my entire body felt good. When I was done, I got to look at my reflection in the mirror. I looked like the fiery ghost that my mother used to talk about. When I came out of the bathroom, that man was gone. I just sat there in that room, wondering where I was. I don’t mean to be ungrateful, but I do wonder why he saved me. He said that he has his reasons, and I am really curious about what those are. I looked outside the window, and it was a beautiful view. There was a garden, and the sky was clear, but I realized something. I used to love things like this; they would bring me a lot of joy. My mother loved gardening, and I would look out the window to watch her. It was always the most beautiful thing in my eyes. I could just sit by the window and watch as she talked to her flowers and plants. I would try to imagine and guess what she was saying. I have such fond memories of seeing such things. Then why don’t I feel anything? Why don’t I feel happy? Why don’t I find the sight in front of me to be beautiful? All I have is this anger inside me. I had this, I had all this, and it was taken away from me. Why? Why can’t I sit by my bedroom window and look at my mother? Why did they have to kill my entire family? Why are people so greedy? Aunt said that it was my mother who was greedy, but that isn’t true. We were content, we were going to live and die. My parents had no intention of using this power I have. I know that they were going to grow old and die. I know that they wouldn’t have tried to mess with the cycle of life. What is born must die, what lives must grow, and what grows eventually withers. Then why are there people out there who try to cheat death? Someone knocked on the door, and an older-looking gentleman walked in. “The Vampire Prince is ready to see you,” he said, and I froze in place. Wait, did he just say the Vampire Prince? I mean, don’t get me wrong, I noticed right away he was a vampire. “Did you just say the Vampire Prince?” I asked him and he nodded. “Your Majesty Kael is waiting for you,” he repeated, this time saying his name. Kael, that is the name of the Vampire Prince who has been searching for me. He also wants me dead, and he also wants to cheat death. How on earth did I end up being saved by him? Is that what he meant when he said he had his own reasons for saving me? Was it because he knew that I was the only way he could be healed? But how would he have known to wait for me there? Is this all luck on his side, or was it all planned? The only way to get answers is to go and see him. I nodded at this and followed the butler guy. He led me to a dining room that had a large table. The place screamed wealth and luxury everywhere you looked. “Please have a seat,” the man I now know to be the Vampire Prince Kael said. “There is a girl I am looking for, a girl from your coven called Iris Alderidge,” he said. I looked at him, confused, so he doesn’t know who I am. Wait, I don’t care if I live or die. But one thing is certain: I want everyone who killed my family to pay for their crimes. Even if it means I need to sacrifice myself to the Vampire Prince. “The girl you are looking for is me. My name is Iris Alderidge, and Vampire Prince Kael Thorne. I have a proposal for you,” I said. I watched how his eyes widened and watched how his lips curved up into a smirk. Will he agree to my proposal?
