I listened hard to Fabian as he explained in detail what he wanted me to do. He and Dontay were going hunting so he needed me to do this very important job. “Do you understand what you have to do?” Fabian asked me sternly.
I nodded. “I have to go and find my way across the dark lands where the monsters live and I need to find where the Devil sleeps”
Fabian nodded, “And how do you find where the Devil sleeps?” he asked.
I thought for a moment making sure what I said was correct. “I use my nose, It will be the strongest smell.”
“Very good, and what do you do when you find where the devil sleeps?” he pushed.
“I-I make a mess”
“He makes a mess” Fabian laughed as he repeated what I said. “Gwen what the f**k do you teach him? He still speaks like a child.” He shouted as he slapped me around the face. “You f**k it up! Trash it, smash it up. You do not just make a mess!” It didn't hurt, it never really did which is why they started using weapons to hurt me.
I heard Gwen storming towards us, I hadn't even noticed that she had left. “Don't blame me, this is down to the pair of you. If you had done more with him he would be more clued up on today's world. Leaving him in a cage for years all alone did not help the matter. It takes time to fix the issues he has.”
“What is the point in you even being here then?” Dontay joined in.
She opened her arms wide, “ Exactly! What am I doing here? I'm more than happy to go home, I never wanted to come in the first place.” she shouted.
“Shut-up!” Fabian shouted, his voice echoed through the cave. He pointed his finger at her angrily to warn her.
When it was silent again Fabian turned back to me. “You go in and get out as quick as you can, understand?” I nodded agreeing with him. “You may not talk properly but you know how to fight. You only fight people on the dark lands, kill shots only, do not leave witnesses, you do remember that is where the evil came from that killed mother, don't you?”
I nodded. “I remember”
“The devil is the one that put the evil in you, he cursed you. He is the reason we can't live as a family. If he knows your there he will come and kill us all. Do you want Gwen to be tortured and killed?” I shook my head, I can't let my family be killed. “Good, you stay hidden, get in then get out before the devil comes back and releases his evil. Also make sure nobody sees you, they all have a connection to the devil and can call him back straight away”
I nodded again. “Any problems, the collar will go off and you will be left helpless against the devil.” Why would he put it on me then? I thought to myself. But I didnt ask, I remained quiet.
I stayed seated on my bed for a while longer, just until the twins came to get me again. It was the first time I had been allowed out by myself, I didn't want to mess it up. I wondered if I did a good enough job that I would be allowed to go out again.
Gwen didn't speak to me anymore after her argument with the twins, she seemed to forget all about my studies too. I hoped she wasn't angry with me.
“Come on, now!” Dontay ordered as he waved at me.
I stood, wearing the only item of clothing I owned, a pair of cargo shorts, I was never gifted a shirt or shoes like my bothers. But I didn't mind, I didn't do anything that I needed clothes for, so It wasn't a big deal to me.
I walked just behind my brothers as they led me to the opening of the cave. It was pretty dark and I wondered if I was going to be able to find where the devil sleeps.
We walked for a couple of minutes down a rocky pathway until we reached the thickness of the trees. “This is as far as we go, you have no scent so they will not be able to track you. Don't f**k this up boy, or you will get the beating of your life, you hear me?” Fabian warned.
“Ok” I answered him. Turning I looked at the dark forest in front of me. The twins soon left and I was stood, looking around, listening to the animals in the wild. They sounded much different to back home.
“GO!” Dontays voice sounded from further behind me, a small rock hit my back.
“I'm going” I answered quietly knowing they probably wouldn't hear me. Regardless I began my walk into the unknown darkness.
It wasnt belong before I began to pick up odd smells, I was told this would happen. I stopped for a moment and inhaled deeply, slowly I released all the strange smells but there was one that stood out. The hairs on the back of my neck stood on end and I focused on that particular one. It seem to call to me, it wanted me to go towards it. I remember the twins saying it might do this. The devil was evil, he drew people closer before killing them.
I had it locked in, the very scent I wanted, a part of me wished the devil was in bed still sleeping so I could kill him there and then for what he did to me and my family. I'm sure my father would love me if the devil hadn't of put poison in me.
I moved fast, I could sense people nearby but I made sure I was not seen. I kept to the trees, steering clear of the houses that I passed. They were very different to where I live, I knew because I had seen them as I travelled here, I was allowed to sit in the back of the car, which made me happy. It was the first time I had seen other houses, I was never allowed to leave the basement. Some houses I could see in through the windows, I could see parents with their children, happy, laughing.
I wondered which child they didn't want, the one that lives in the basement box. My brothers said there is a bad child in every family. Maybe that child was already down in their basement. Because seeing them all together they all looked really happy, I never saw my father or brothers smile like that.
I continued on my travels, until I came to an opening, in front of me was a large house. It looked quite nice from where I was standing but it wasnt true. The devil lies, he draws people in with his lies and hurts them. This was all a lie and I was going to show him I'm not fooled by his lies.
