Boy

1026 Words
BOY Gwen came in the secluded room where Fabian had left me. She cursed under her breath about Dontay. He always was a tyrant, well that is what she called him, I wasn't quite sure what it meant. I hated him for the way he made Gwen feel at times, the nasty and rude comments, the pranks the twins used to play on her which brought her to tears. She was the closest thing any of us had to mother. So why were they so mean to her? “Are you ok Gwen?” I asked her as she sat on her little cot bed. We shared this area, It wasnt a room as such but a little cove tucked away at the back of the cave. It had no doors or toilet or even running water, just piles of dust. “I'm fine, I just wonder at times if that boy has anything between his ears at all! I mean where does he think I hide a pantry full of food? In my undergarments?” she joked. She called us all boys, it kind of stuck, so much so everyone called me boy. But I wasn't a child, I was a man. I knew I was. Well I felt like a man, I was much larger than the twins, but I don't think I am as many years as they are. Our mother didn't get the chance to name me as a child like she did Dontay and Fabian. I just wish I had the chance to meet her before she died. Father always told me the evil in me came out when I was born, It got into her blood and it killed her. I knew I still had some of that evil in me. The voices in my head were bad, they would tell me to do bad things, tell me things that I knew wasn't true. I was a curse, that is why Dontay and Fabian had to punish me at times. Gwen tells me I should never listen to them. I try not to, but when they get too bad I have bad thoughts about hurting them, I know that is wrong because I shouldnt hurt them. It makes father angry and he has to come by and give me a shot to make the anger go away. Father always told me they were in charge, so I had to obey them no matter what else I would have to take the punishments. “Here, don't tell the troublesome duo” Gwen whispered and handed me a small biscuit. Winking at me with her toothy smile, she really was the best. Well the only thing in my life to show me kindness. I sat on my bed, closing my eyes I could hear the birds outside of the cave. I could almost picture them in my mind if I concentrated enough. “Thankyou Gwen.” I smiled at her kindness. “How long are we here?” I asked biting into the crumbly goodness. Gwen shrugged, “I don't know boy, but regardless we shall continue your studies, there is no reason for slacking on your education.” I laughed to myself, this was typical of Gwen, She had always been around, but it was only the last year she had been allowed to spend time with me and teach me to read and about things from the outside. I was late talking, I never had anyone to teach me the right words to use. I know much more now but I still dont understand some things. Now I have her help, I find it so much easier to express myself. I owe a lot to Gwen. “Boy!” I heard Fabian's deep croaky voice shout as he walked in holding some strange contraption. “Sit forward” he ordered. I did as he said, I knew he didnt like to be disobeyed. Strapping the strange thing around my neck, It felt strange, cold and heavy, it didnt smell too good either, I didnt like it. Pulling at the side to stop it pinching my skin he slapped my hand out of the way. “You dont touch this do you understand?” he said in a stern voice. “Ok.” I answered silently. I didn't want to annoy him. I still held the scars from the lashing two nights ago. “I wish you wouldn't do this to the boy.” I heard Gwen grumble. It made me think if this thing was going to cause me pain. “Shut it Gwen!” Dontay snapped at her. “Are you sure it's working properly!” He asked Fabian as he came closer squinting his eyes to look at the lock as it snapped shut. “Do you doubt my mad skills brother?” He never called me brother, he didn't treat me the same as he did Dontay. Sometimes I wish he would. Before another thought crossed my mind a high pitched tone emitted around the room, followed by a blinding pain which made me fall back instantly onto the bed writhing around in pain. Just as quick as it started, the pain was suddenly gone. I was left panting, trying to regulate my breathing as my body came back to life. All I could hear were the twins laughing uncontrollably. “Never doubted you Fab, can I try?” Dontay asked, trying to take the phone from his hand. Fabian snatched his hand back. “No, it's not a toy. I just needed the boy to know what damage this thing can do.” he smiled down at me. He slipped the phone into his jean pocket and slowly crouched down so he was on my level. The serious look on his face was one that I learnt not to mess with “Now listen to me outcast, you do as I say else I press that button again, and I wont be turning it off anytime soon.” I nodded my head, I knew he didn't like me to speak to him much. “Now listen carefully....”
