Fifty-Five: Christian Cardinal      I could see Ransom watching me carefully after Piper had left. I resented that he had made her leave. I would never hurt her. Him, I couldn’t promise anything. He had done nothing but try to destroy my relationship with her. I was convinced that if we hadn’t had to deal with him, we still would have been together.           Ransom stared down at me, looking like he was contemplating whether or not to gut me. “You seem to think my Mother is alive,” he said, “why do you think that my mother is alive?”         I smiled. “Because, you forget. Your mother wasn’t simply an artist. She was also a scientist before she married your father. She only became an artist after, when she became bored from being a society wife. Don’t you know how your parents met?
