I watched as Eryx stiffened, the change so sudden it sent a chill through me. One second he was seated behind his desk, eyes on his laptop, the next his entire body went taut like a wire pulled too tight.
Someone had entered the territory. He said.
We all felt the tension in the air, the way the room seemed to close in, the way Maya straightened beside him. Eryx’s eyes darkened as he slowly lifted his head and looked at her.
“Can you give me a very brief and direct description of where the females are?” Eryx asked Maya, his voice calm but edged with urgency.
