(Damian) The night of the gala came fast. Alina stepped out of the car, stunning in a short red dress that Nina had helped her choose. I didn’t miss the way the men stared at her. I stayed close just to show them who she belonged to so that they wouldn't think about approaching her. “You good?” I asked, leaning down. She nodded. “Yeah. Let’s get this over with.” We entered the ballroom. My parents were already there, standing near the Mayor. “Damian,” Mom said with a polite smile. “Alina.
