When I finally came down the stairs, the house was already coming to life. Everyone was just about settling into the dining room. I could hear Lilith's voice chiming up about something before she dissolved into a laugh, and Christian saying something about "at least let me have coffee before the madness starts."
Sawyer was standing close to Mum, saying something I couldn't hear, and Mum was listening intently.
I stood at the edge for a moment, watching Mum. Last night, she came to my room. She asked me to come down for dinner. And God, I snapped at her, but the truth was, I panicked. Something in me shut off again after Sawyer saw us. So I was defensive and I let the darkness inside me spill all over her. I shut the door on her and didn't even think about what she might've felt.
