I do as Alfric says and focus as much as I can on my connection to Drew. It’s not really hard. With just a little effort, I can feel his arm around me when he caught me after I stumbled the first time we met. I can see the pain of his rejection in his eyes and feel the admiration and awe I felt for him when I saw him shift into his bionically completed wolf. My trust in him and the way I have always felt safe with him fills me with warmth, and the air in front of me begins to shimmer until I can see him faintly, as if his image has been filtered multiple times. It’s weak, but he’s there, and my heart fills with hope.
He tries to answer me when I tell him I can see him. At least, I think he does; his lips move, but I can’t hear anything. Whatever is separating him is muting
