Yasmine Talks To The Shaman

633 Words
Yasmine sat with her mother in law holding a ball of string as she continued adding to the blanket she was knitting. “I’m worried momma.” She admitted. Lora peered at Yasmine curiously, “Why honey?” Yasmine shook her head as the string glided from the ball and onto her mother in law’s needle. “My son…Jasper.” Lora nodded thinking of the name, “Ah yes, the one of your previous mating. What of him?” Looking at the older woman, Yasmine whispered afraid, “He’s dating a vampire.” Lora didn’t stop her knitting as she casually said, “I did hear some of the wolves speaking of this. And this worries you why?” Scoffing as she played with the ball of yarn, Yasmine stressed, “A vampire momma? She could hurt him; she could kill him if she loses control.” Lora nodded in agreement, “She could. But so, could you and everyone else on this reservation.” Yasmine knew that. Which was why she’d always hesitated in bringing Jasper around, if he got into a fight with a wolf he’d be hurt. Badly. And Yasmine hadn’t wanted to lose her son by trying to include him in her new life. So, she abandoned him in her old one and neglected him instead. “I know. I tried to shield him from this world. This world isn’t for the faint of heart and I was scared he’d run. That he’d tell the world or worse, end up in a nut house in a straitjacket.” Lora laughed lightly, “You youngins are funny.” Yasmine looked at her confused as she kept knitting, “You’d be amazed how quick young people adapt and accumulate. What you were really scared of was your son looking at you like a monster. And now you know for a fact he loves not only you, but another kind of monster.” Yasmine was silent for a moment and then asked, “Would it be wrong for me to tell him to stay away from her?” Lora didn’t even need to think on that answer, “Yes.” Yasmine’s jaw clenched as her hands shook in fear, “But momma-.” Lora’s brown eyes pinned Yasmine to her stool beside her. “You trying to interfere with your son’s mating is like him trying to interfere with yours and Davon’s.” Yasmine wanted to protest, but Lora put a comforting hand on her head, “You let nothing stop you from choosing my son, what makes you think you can stop your son from choosing his mate and his happiness?” Yasmine couldn’t answer that. She had no answer for the loaded question. So, she asked instead, “But is a vampire really the best thing for him? What if he wants to be like her?” Lora shrugged, “That’s his decision to make. The real question Yasmine, is rather or not you’ll love him regardless of what he’ll become.” Another question from her mother in law Yasmine couldn’t answer. As the two mother’s sat in silence, the grandfather clock struck twelve. And as the hands stopped dead, they began to bleed as Lora felt the vision rush past her gaze. She said nothing to her daughter in law as she continued to silently worry. But Lora was completely confident as she sat back knitting the story she was sure that would be told throughout the pack long after she was gone.
