I just couldn’t believe that I had all my hopes in Reece; I thought he was going to change but I was wrong.

I was seated in his car after our little argument, and when a call came through, I was eager to know who he was talking to until I heard the conversation with the girl Amber, my heart sank, I felt like my world was collapsing right in front of me and I knew there was nothing I could do about it.

As soon as he stopped the car in front of my apartment, I got out and didn’t even bother to stay back and listen to him lie to my face again.

“We are here.” He announced as he pulled in front of her apartment and I silently unbuckled, took my backpack and opened the door.

“Can I walk you in?” he asked and I forced a smile then turned to look at him with a sly smile on my face.

“You heard her, she is waiting for you at your place, maybe tonight you will get a nice bang, goodnight Reece.” I said and banged the door then walked towards my apartment, I knew his eyes were boring into my back so I didn’t even bother to look behind, and I got into my house and plopped myself on the couch hoping he would knock on my door but after waiting for about five minutes, I heard his car starting and I knew there was no way he was coming into my house.

I didn’t even have the strength to go to the kitchen and make something for myself, I just called my parents to tell them that I had arrived safely in New York and I went straight to bed.

The following day I woke up at my usual time, and prepared myself to go to work, I hailed a cab and went straight to work, I met Katie already settled in.

“Hey girl you look tired for a morning, are you okay?” She asked and I sighed, I wasn’t feeling well, I just wanted the day to end so I could go back to my house and sleep.

“No actually I just had a long weekend that is why I am tired and how are you?”

“I am good, what were you up to that made you so tired like this, you look like you just woke up from a three-day sleep, you look like a walking zombie, and did you even apply any makeup on your face today?”

“No I didn’t think I needed any but now that you are mentioning it I think I need to have a look at my face, do you have a mirror with you?” I asked as I sat down she reached for her drawer and pulled out a mirror and mascara for me to apply, “I owe you one, how was your weekend I hope the boss is not around because I am lazy as f**k right now, I wish I called in sick today.” I said as I clicked my computer and typed in the password.

“My weekend was good though I just spent it around with some friends of mine; nothing is exciting about it.”

“Okay I was in Seattle to see my parents and I guess that is the reason why I am tired.”

“Whoa, you were in Seattle over the weekend and you came back after a day, if I was you, I would ask for a few days off and spend some time with my family, I just don’t get the chance to see my mother.”

“I never thought about that but I wouldn’t want to spend the whole week with my mother.”

“And why not, I would kill to spend time with my mother but I guess we are different, so what is exciting about Seattle?”

“The fact that my dad wants me to take his car, I am saving to buy my car but my father being my father, I guess he convinced me.”

“You are lucky, the only time my father bought me a car was when I turned eighteen, you should be thankful to have such amazing parents who care about you and want nothing but the best.”

“Of course I am grateful; I just want to do things on my own and not my parents chipping in every time I am in need,” I said and after chatting for a while, I got back to work, we both were busy until the boss walked in.

“Mrs. Zoey I would like to see you in my office please.” Mr Howard said when he walked past our working area.

“I think Mr Howard likes you.” Katie said while winking at me and I smiled and playfully slapped her back before I pushed back my seat, “You joke way too much but I don’t think that is the case, it is just normal for the boss and his employees to communicate, I will see you when I come back.” I said and sighed deeply before I walked to Mr. Howard’s office, I had no idea why he wanted to see me but I was hoping it had nothing to do with me losing my job.

“Sir you asked to see me?” I asked immediately as I walked into his office.

“Yes please have a seat, Mrs. Zoey.” He said as he pointed at the seat opposite his desk, “How long have you been working with this bank?” He asked and my heart skipped.

“About a year Sir, is everything okay?” I asked with a concerned tone and he just smiled and brushed it off.

“Oh don’t worry about that, you are not in trouble, I was just asking because I wanted to know.”

“Okay about a year Sir.”

“I appreciate the work you have been doing this whole time.”

“Okay Sir that is what I was employed to do Sir, I am just exercising my duty.”

“I know and that is why I called you here today, I wanted to ask something from you it is a favour.” He started and I nodded ushering him to go on, “There is this business trip held annually in Los Angeles in one of our main branches there and I wanted you to represent us, like represent the bank because it is important.”

“But Sir, I just started working and I don’t think I have that much experience yet, you should choose the likes of Anthony and Dalton, you know they have been working here longer than me.” I said and he smiled and then turned his attention back to me.”

“I know this is not what you were expecting to hear from me but trust me, in as much as I would love the other employees to represent this bank, I know you are the right person for this job and I have no doubt about it, I have thought about it, I had a whole week of analyzing everyone and I settled on you so please don’t say no because I am sure this is also a great opportunity for you to learn a few things one or two from the annual general meeting.” He said and it made some sense to me.

Maybe that was a great opportunity for me to learn a few things and the fact that I had never been to Los Angeles before warmed my heart because an opportunity had just presented itself to me and I was not just going to let it slide like that I was going to grab it.

“Okay Sir, I understand but I don’t think I can even afford a ticket flight,” I said quite embarrassed and Mr Howard smiled, he was always smiling and maybe that was why Katie thought that he liked me in some way but he was always a jovial young man that had a girlfriend, I don’t think I was even his type to start with.

“That will be taken care of by the bank, it benefits the bank and everything will be taken care of by the bank, I just want to know if you are ready for this big task ahead of us or if I should start looking for another person to take up the position.”

“I am ready Sir, I will be glad to represent this bank and I won’t disappoint you.”

“I know you won’t that is why I have faith in you, I know you will do, you have two days to prepare for it, everything else will be taken care of by the respective, just prepare to leave on Thursday, it will take place on Friday and you have the whole weekend to yourself then I will expect a report on Monday when you come back to work.”

“No problem Sir, I won’t disappoint you thank you for considering me.”

“Oh you don’t have to thank me for anything, you deserve it because you have been working extra hard for this, you deserve it, you can go back to your office.” He said as he dismissed me and I didn’t know I was smiling ear to ear when I resumed my seat.

“It seems like you have been told something great in there, what is the good news about? You could share it with me you know?” Katie said and I smiled.

“It is nothing actually, I would have told you if there was something worth sharing with you but trust me it is nothing,” I said dismissing her and she shrugged.

“Okay as you say but you seem so happy and I thought maybe he gave you some great news, you came back from the office smiling from ear to ear.”

“Yeah, I guess I am just happy today,” I said as I got busy at my workstation, working at the Diamond Trust Bank as a financial analyst was one of my dreams while I was still in college, I just never thought that it was going to happen so soon and when my mom gave me the news about linking me up at the bank for my internship I was more than happy, and after graduating I was absorbed in for my good work and being recommended by Mr. Howard out of all the employees working at the bank was something I wasn’t expecting but now that he had personally asked me to accompany one of the employees, my day had just gotten better, I was happy that I didn’t even think about Reece and his issue with Amber the whole day at work or maybe that was exactly what I needed, a distraction from the reality.
