Misery Has No Company In The End

Katherine looked at her mama as her soft face and kind eyes calmed her down a little. Rushing to her and pulling her from being close to Bartha Mae in case the siren tried to attack her, it wasn’t put past her. Noticing the glare her daughter gave in warning over her shoulder, Eloise still didn’t look at Bartha Mae who stood rigid behind her. Instead, she asked her daughter, “Well? And I thought you were heading out with Henry darling?” It was speaking of her mate that the wolf came rushing from the crowds looking worried. Village still watching as Henry checked her over, he was gentle whispering, “You okay?” Nodding, she watched him glare in Bartha Mae’s direction, making the siren respond by throwing up her nose in response. Rolling his eyes not caring for the snobby woman he’d unfortunately met already; Henry knew ripping her throat out would look bad. So, fighting the impulse, he gently turned to his mate and pushed her to the jeep, “Let’s go mate. This is upsetting our time together and she does not get the honor of doing such.” Nodding in agreement, Katherine looked at her mama unsure if she should leave her, but the woman waved bye to her daughter and with a wink seemed to promise she was fine. Waving bye, Katherine didn’t know what was different about her mama, but Bartha Mae felt it the second Katherine was gone. Eloise’s gaze was sharper, more alert and powerful in a sense as the jeep left from sight and Bartha Mae landed in hers. Uncomfortable under it, something in her aura made Bartha Mae stiffen as she eerily floated closer to the siren. “You’re insulting my child again Bartha Mae?” Not able to deny she had, Bartha Mae stuttered, “Well you see, Katherine got a little testy with me first, I just- I well, I may have said, I didn’t mean-.” Shaking her head Eloise tutted, “No. You started this. You always did. But this…this fight, I will end.” Bartha Mae felt Eloise’s pretty Aqua Marine eyes stabbing into her and felt like she was bleeding out as Eloise admitted, “I ignored your backward compliments and side talk for years. It’s always been a pixies’ way to ignore and avoid. To take if not the high road, the peaceful approach to confrontation. So much so, that I became passive in the bullying of not only myself, but my child. And that is a big problem because my child is just that. Mine.” Bartha Mae swallowed hard as Eloise cautioned everyone listening, “My daughter is no longer going to be the main topic for salacious entertainment anymore. She’s done nothing to be pigeonholed into this disgusting narrative that’s been painted. And it ends today.” Bartha Mae scoffed as her cracking voice lied, “Oh Eloise, I don’t think, I mean I’ve never said-.” Eloise nodded, “But you have. We both know you and a lot of your fellow posse have had more than enough to say about me, my daughter, and everything that occurred and distorted it for your own amusement. Well, you’ve had your fun. Now please, do as my daughter advised and grow the f**k up Bartha. Because this is not a conversation, this is a warning.” Bartha Mae’s mouth fell open in surprise at the nerve of Eloise, and as she tried to give off the ignition that it was unjust, Eloise was cutthroat in response. “Considering, your baseless, childish, and frankly pitiful attempts at destroying my family? Take this in kind compared to how I initially wanted to respond after realizing what you’d done to me.” Seeing the look in her eye, Eloise’s cold fury felt fiery like the depths of hell and Bartha felt singed as the mother hissed, “Because of you, I worried so much for my daughter. If someone had hurt her, killed her, she could have needed her mama. She did. And you kept her from me. I could spend an eternity torturing you for that purgatory you put me through.” The world was silent, and the words left its impact as Bartha Mae stood swaying as even her fellow Siren kin started to back away from her. Not wanting to be associated with her or her actions, Eloise gave her a look over and then tensely stated, “We accept our faults in our roles in this situation Bartha Mae. So, you will too, and even with the disrespect, pain, and almost misfortune you caused us? You’ve still been pardoned. Take that blessing and leave the rest of your supposed it hurt feelings and further plans of bullying, or gossiping about my daughter at your front door when you leave the house from now on.” Eloise kept going when Bartha Mae’s mouth opened as she warned, “The only thing that should be coming from your lips right now Bartha. Is the quick agreement of keeping my daughter’s name out of your mouth. Staying the hell away from my mate, and if you’re smart? The agreement to not push another button over here.” Eloise grinned viciously, “Or do, and we’ll see what happens and if you’ll like the results.” Doubtful since Bartha Mae could almost feel the intent of violence in Eloise’s aura, she swallowed hard as she whispered, “Now really is this necessary? I did not start this with Katherine! You should be going after the girl who screamed in her face what a floozy she was!” Eloise sighed as she rolled her eyes, “Oh stop Bartha.” Before Bartha Mae could whine, Eloise reminded her, “Josie Carlin is a child. What she did was wrong, but she has corrected her error, and my daughter has forgiven her. You however took a fight between young girls, ran with it, and has used it to bolster a fight you’ve wanted to pick for a while now. Because you’re right,” Eloise stood toe to toe with the woman as she deduced, “it wasn’t Katherine you started with. It was me.” The snide comments, the looks, the insinuation that Eloise was so lucky David had mated her before going out with Bartha Mae, had all gone ignored. But now it would no longer as Eloise stared the siren down with a grin, “Well here I am Bartha Mae. The one who got the man you wanted, who wronged you by being younger and mating the guy you wanted.” Bartha Mae’s orange eyes flashed, and Eloise smiled as she held up a hand, “And if you wish, we can settle this now. Between me and you, as it should have stayed.” Bright aqua hue of a power bright enough, and strong enough to be felt, Bartha Mae saw the difference and knew before she could get a note out of her vocal cords, Eloise would have her. So, as she fell back and looked around wide eyed and scared like a cornered animal. Eloise watched people look away embarrassed for the woman as she swallowed hard and then turned back to Eloise who shook her head seeing the answer clearly. “Right. All lip just like you were in school.” And with a glance that felt promising if that were to ever change, Bartha Mae felt the offer to go up against Eloise stay on the table. Now forever a line in the sand, waiting to be crossed between the two… Becoming clearer as Eloise strutted past her confidently with her head up and her posture impeccable, the dismissal to her was clear. And while some worried the internally boiling Bartha Mae would strike her as she passed, the pixie was confident she wouldn’t dare. Which she of course didn’t. Instead, Bartha Mae was left standing there like an NPC with a humbled expression on her face as everyone staring and gossiping about her all refused to look her in the face as they did so. Feeling the eyes burning her, Bartha Mae felt scrubbed raw as she tried to jerk her chin up and turn around like nothing was wrong. Only to stumble in step as she stared back at David Tomsen. And seeing his disgust in her, felt hollowing as he stood holding his cane and dressed nice and cool for the nice spring day. Eloise floating to his side elegantly and their arms naturally locking, the striking pixies looking so happy and healthy, and almost shined making Bartha Mae watching jealous even more than she was before. Having mocked how they’d aged just moments ago, she admitted to how well they looked for their age truthfully and felt the burn of the unfairness of it. Throat poised to unleash a siren scream, it was as she almost lost herself that David turned and with an icy glare slammed his cane on the sidewalk once. Everything frozen, in her and around them, the warning wasn’t said. But the look was speaking a thousand words and sucked the air from Bartha Mae’s lungs and ruined the pitch she’d tried to hit. Coughing as she held her throat, Bartha Mae was a spluttering mess as David looked at his mate who winked flirty at him already knowing he had her back. Smoothly putting on his hat on and giving her a wink back under the brim, both pixies turned with grace and poise, as they breezed away. Their conversation airy as they left the negative emotions behind like they did to Bartha Mae. Left in their dust, the siren standing in mist of high emotion was again forgotten as the consequences of her actions? Left her on the sidewalk standing alone…
