Confronting Pain II

1518 Words
“I got into a fight with three girls from the colonies.” Lottie, Noriene, and Hazel. She had heard Lottie was mated to a snow leopard up in Iceland, Noriene was still in Heart Cove. Married to a Guard II wolf, she was pregnant with their first child when she’d seen Katherine in the store she’d froze. Turning away quick as her still best friend Hazel appeared, the two-year-old clutching her hand squeaked when the grip of her mama’s hand got tighter. But as fear raced through her, the ass whopping Katherine had put on them clearly remember, she casually raised a hand and waved before dropping her Eggos in her cart. Walking off without a word, not needing any, it was clear. Their eyes had bore into her back like lasers as they remembered indeed. “It was three to one but I managed to come out on top, but I was…scared. I hated feeling scared of people I’d known my whole life, but I was.” Eloise looked at her sadly, “You should have told me you were physically attacked. I would have went to their parents-.” Katherine gave her a sad smile, “They would have twisted the narrative that they were in the right because I was a rumored hussy, and their innocent angels were just being bullied. By me.” And her mother would have been too embarrassed by the word hussy to ever think of defending her then. Only the word lit a fire in her heart now as she whispered, “I can’t believe you were attacked, and I was none the wiser. Goddess curse warts, how dare my embarrassment come before your safety? Never again” Whispering it was okay now, Katheirne was quiet for a moment as her mother asked, “You decided to leave because of them attacking you?” Katherine looked down, “Yeah, I mean, afterwards, they acted like I was crazy and I just felt this pressure like they’d either a, try to fight again or b, tell an adult and make me out to the be bad guy. Which would have worked and I didn’t know what that could have led to then.” Her powers being bound, or worse stripped, or even being chased and forbidden from Heart Cove and the colonies again. Having not wanted the fester wound to get more infected, Katherine had done the brave thing and amputated it. Even if it hurt and she’d sobbed relentlessly after losing that limb. She’d lived. “Leaving was hard for me too. Especially with you and daddy mad at me about it. Neither of you saw how bad it was getting in the village for me or understood then why I was leaving, so of course that made me mad at first. When I first left, and I got to California I did go a little harder than I intended.” Happy to have not been around anyone who could remember her not so cute two-week party bender, Katherine had gotten off the plane, found a hot rich guy, and without evening needing to f**k him she’d gotten a room with his six other equally hot roommates. Influencers, models, and wannabe somethings all in one place, none of them noticed her or knew her as anything but a new temporary friend to stay awhile. Not making waves but instead making blurry memories, Katherine had been drunk and while not a saint? Not stupid either. “I was drinking and smoking, I skinny dipped for the first time, and while-,” While, Kyle, or Kevin, or Keith, or whatever K name he was had been excited at the clearly “fun” girl, it was when he’d tried to get another look at her naked, she hadn’t let him. And had left the next day for their distant relatives place never to see him again. Or tempt herself. “I could have had a meaningless fling or several when I was there. But that principle in knowing it’d be meaningless and it wouldn’t prove or fix the times I was called a slut, and it me made stop and realize why I was thinking I even needed to do it.” And it was then she found deep down that being balled through to prove a point to a bunch of people who didn’t have her v****a wasn’t what she wanted. “I realized I didn’t have to have s*x or do anything intimate to grow up. I could still date, and conversate, and learn from people. But I didn’t need to lower myself and forget what I wanted for myself to prove a point.” And she didn’t, instead she’d gone to live her life however she wanted. Going on dates so to speak became more like a “give me a part of you” so she could see if it could be a part of her too. Trying new foods and new things, Katherine had her mom in stitches when she told her about a meal that gave her the runs for two days, and a skateboarding accident that had almost left her with a new nose. “Thank god at the time I still had my healing.” Wiping tears of laughter from her eyes, Eloise laughed, “Oh baby, you’ve been uncoordinated your whole life, I don’t see how you thought skateboarding would be your calling.” Poking out her tongue at her mom, Eloise just kept giggling at her. Both giggling still, it was when it quieted, Eloise asked, “In the two years you were gone, did you fall in love with anyone?” Shaking her head, Katherine whispered, “No, I ugh…I felt a disconnect when it came to love. I liked people, thought they were attractive, and liked personalities and their different backgrounds. I’d watched humans and western culture and any other one on a screen or in a book, but I finally got to see it up close and know about it personally. I took advantage of that but no…no love.” Eloise saw the aura change and mood change and gently whispered, “But something happened with that Zane character?” Holding up a letter, Katherine paled as her mom told her, “You were telling me in this one he was being more aggressive in approach? Had cornered you at a party and was trying to kiss you. but you ran from him. Is that why…is he why you came home? Did he hurt you?” Katherine knew this would come up. Eventually. But considering their stance on how she handled the hunters, Katherine hadn’t known whether or not she’d want to tell them about what she’d done. Only…she’d come home because she’d needed to do just that. About to cry, Katherine whispered, “I killed him.” A statement that made Eloise only grew more afraid as she guessed, “Because he hurt you?” Katherine breathed out hard, “Zane…Zane was a friend of a friend. I didn’t…I didn’t care whether or not he hung out with us. I mean, at first, I thought he was cute, but it faded and so did his charm when he like almost every other guy in California. Nothing, but a bum stoner white boy covered in tattoos and wearing a beanie in the sun in the summer.” She gave her mom a drooling look who scrunched up her nose in disgust, “Seriously?” Nodding, Katherine remembered the guy, and while she’d once said he wasn’t the most awful person in the world? She’d seen his heart. His intentions. And she knew they’d been done before… Because they weren’t new actions his mind wanted to take. Ripping her underwear off, holding her down, ignoring her when she said no. It all felt like second nature coursing through him. And she’d been disgusted. And then, angry. “One night after a party, he told a girl Amber that he wanted to have s*x with me. They all knew I wasn’t hooking up and it was the only reason he stuck around. To see if I would or if he could catch me vulnerable but when he never could, he decided to make a move.” A move that had ended horrible for him. “I’d already been feeling my magic come back in these erratic spasms that hurt and I couldn’t contain it. But when…when he asked her to bring me there, after a while everyone was trying to leave, so I did too. But he kept trying to tell me to stay, to talk to him.” Only she hadn’t wanted to talk to him, and he hadn’t wanted to talk to her. “The girl, Amber, she left me saying she’d be outside the door. When I tried to leave behind her me and Zane had words. He tried to kiss me, so I slapped him, but he slapped me back.” Eloise grew pale as her daughter assured, “He didn’t r**e me.”
