Days bled into a week and soon April was saying goodbye and May was coming in strong. Days getting longer as the spring heat predicted a hotter summer, Katherine was working Spell Bound when Maxine came in stressed. Having not seen her much, Katherine felt her erratic emotions and watched a book fall behind her.
Twice.
Making her sigh out in anger only for twelve more to follow.
“Hey.” Looking up as Katherine appeared and waved a hand, the books righted themselves as Katherine was gentle as she asked, “Are you okay?” Nodding, Maxine lied, “Fine.”
Hands fidgeting with her sugar for her tea, Maxine spilled the condiments suddenly and tried not to cry as overwhelming emotions made her go haywire. Lights flickering and books hitting the floor, Katherine wouldn’t let her help when she waved her hand and got the store back in order. Cleaning up the sugar, the grains levitated and fell into the trash as books righted themselves on shelves.
Pouring two sugars into Maxine’s tea like she likes, Katherine heated it up feeling it was cold.
“Thanks Katherine.” Winking at her, Katherine sat with the witch in the herb room and watched her agonize over her mental battle before confessing to her concerned friend, “I can’t get pregnant, at least…I don’t think I can. It’s looking like a no, and it’s freaking me out because I don’t know how to tell Evan.”
Calming her as she began to panic, Katherine stopped her mid panic attack but couldn’t fix it as Maxine whispered devastated, “I wanted to be a mom.” Giving her a strong hug, Katherine told her what she needed to hear, “You can still be a mom Maxine. Even if it looks different than how you imagined.”
Letting Maxine cry it out, she was sniffling when Katherine asked, “Did you perform a spell of fertility? Did it show you wouldn’t be able to conceive?” Maxine shook her head before explaining why she felt she couldn’t, “When your mom did a test on a whim, I knew the chances were slim so I was okay with it not being positive. But we’ve been trying for weeks and I’m still not pregnant and I’m scared that I can’t get pregnant.”
Understanding that fear, Katherine breathed, “Do you want me to help?” Surprised when Katherine put a “Gone for lunch” sign on the spellbound door and locked up she then turned to Maxine watching her confused, “We can find out if you can get pregnant. Or better yet, I can.”
Pixie’s being natural healers and falling in as Doulas and mid wives for years, their magic and expecting mothers had gone together like peanut butter and jelly since the time before smart phones. Capable now, Katherine gathered the needed ingredients and pushed Maxine to change.
“You’re aunt must have something for you to slip into.” Agreeing, Maxine went up the spiral stairs of the herb room. Little room up there used as a semi apartment, the daybed and mini kitchen was suitable for a late night at work and being too exhausted to go home.
Which is why Maxine was able to find something she could slip into. Mind thinking of earlier, Evan finding her and kissing her neck, he growled teasingly, “You’ve been silent mate about trying, have we succeeded?” Teasing back playfully she didn’t know but they should later to see if it would stick just in case, he’d kissed her before leaving. happy to send him off happy, it was when he was gone, Maxine felt dread.
Cold and at the pit of her stomach where she knew her child should be, Maxine was scared. But as she knew she had to face the fear to know the truth, she swallowed it and found the pixie being kind enough to help her.
Finding her in the bathroom off the shoulder of the herb room, the white and black checkered linoleum was cold under Maxine’s bare feet. Katherine heated it up the water by sticking her hand into it.
Watching it began to steam, Maxine climbed into the huge bear claw tub, the white porcelain cradled her as she glanced around. The white walls and hanging plants comforting, it was as light shined through the stained glass window showing the beautiful picture of a woman making flowers glow, a witch, she felt Katherine grab her hand, “Ready?”
Nodding as she turned away from the window, Maxine laid back further.
Laying in with the herbs and unbloomed roses, her red hair became dark as it became soaked with the hot water. Katherine chanting became intelligible as she cut her palm, her lips moving slow and sensual over the ancient pixie language and traced the air with blood sigils.
Blood falling into the water, Katherine’s eyes turned an unnatural white and her eyes unfocused as her head went back and her hands coming up as she kept chanting. Maxine felt dazed for a moment as it all washed over, the roses in the water, comforting, the heat sinking into her bones like the sun, she felt the tips of her toes to the ends of her hair.
And then she was gasping out feeling the magic rush through every cell.
Rushing out of her and making the water glow, she gasped as the flowers bloomed in the water began dying a white ghost rope suddenly appeared around her waist and tied in a knot. Before fading like a phantom’s kiss as Katherine’s voice went silent and everything got quiet.
Maxine cried out shooting out of the water as it became suddenly unnaturally warm and as she trembled, she turned scared to Katherine who blinked rapidly coming into focus. “What was that? W-what did that mean?”
Katherine looked at her and as her brain finally pieced together the images she’d seen, Katherine explained them slowly. “I saw a golem…I couldn’t tell who made it, but it’s blocking your conception. The rope you saw is it’s ties to you. It has a part of you keeping you from carrying your mate’s child.”
About to play dumb on who would not want her to have Evan’s baby, Maxine’s eyes suddenly became murderous when she remembered exactly who would. “f*****g asshole.” Storming out and telling Katherine she didn’t need help, Maxine was dried off, changed, and on a mission with vengeance in her eyes soon enough.
Not wanting to be the asshole she was going to go find, Katherine knew her badass friend would be fine and didn’t worry.
Instead, she enjoyed she was alone for a moment, and as Katherine was enjoying the silence, she was reading a book when she suddenly heard, “Hey.”
Looking up, Katherine glanced at Bernadette and raised an eyebrow, “Evening, how can I help you?” Bernadette shook her head as she whispered in disbelief, “How did you know about all that stuff? Not just me, but you know stuff about mama. I can tell, with how nervous she got hearing you were back. I also hear other people in the village whispering about it too. Saying you know stuff if they try and say something you don’t like. How are you doing it?”
Katherine didn’t smile or give anything away, instead she shrugged and casually danced around the how, “Everyone does dirt, I just know how to find out about it. It’s not a talent more a skill.”
Bernadette started to get annoyed when Katherine looked at her seriously, “Listen, don’t stress on how I know your business. Just know I don’t care and like I told your brother, as long as you and your mother stopped with the antagonistic actions? We’re good.”
Bernadette scoffed mockingly, “Right, so you’ll just let it go?” Nodding even though the brunette looked at her in disbelief, Katherine saw her truthfully upset and scared about what Katherine had to say. Knowing what she was afraid of and not cruel enough to throw it in her face, Katherine left Bernadette surprised when she genuinely promised, “It won’t be repeated again.”
Unbelieving face melting as she stared at Katherine wide eyed, Bernadette’s bronze eyes softened as she whispered, “Why would you do that after all that stuff I said? How I acted to you?” Katherine shrugged her shoulder, “You’re no better or worse than the adults who did the same. You just went along with it because that’s what they did and made it seem okay.”
Unable to deny that Bernadette also silently admitted to herself it was also because she was jealous of Katherine too. Like Josie, she’d envied the power, beauty, and attention given to her by boys and everyone else. So of course tried to get the same attention.
Only for it to go so wrong…
“I’m sorry.” Whispered and nice, Bernadette was surprised when Katherine promised, “It’s okay.” And actually gave her a small smile.
And as the stronger and kinder pixie showed mercy, Bernadette left out of the shop deciding not to push her luck. Still curious about how Katherine knew her and everyone else’s secrets, Katherine knew she’d hold her ways close.
Getting a call from her mate, Katherine agreed to meet him at his place so they could talk and was walking up when he came out with Zeus.
Picking her up, he eagerly kissed her. “I finished the master bedroom, bathroom, and back deck. It’s nice, I think you’ll like it.” Grinning Katherine was already in love with it because of how excited he was. But as he kissed her lovingly, Henry was jittering with excitement, “Oh and we were invited to dinner as well.”
Grinning as she went in, Katherine stopped cold seeing it in the living room on its totem. “Yeah, I was going to ask if that was yours. Didn’t want to throw it out if it was.” Surprised one had sprouted on its own, Katherine knew she shouldn’t be. They popped up everywhere she considered home…
“Yeah, it’s mine.” She whispered uneasily as she looked down and then back at her mate who looked at her confused, “What is it?” Katherine turned back to the goblin head and whispered guilty, “Security.”
Before Henry could ask her to elaborate on what she meant by security, it was proven when the head’s mouth suddenly opened. Eyes glowing a bright yellow, its eerie echoing voice whispering filled the cabin as it warned, “Hunters are in the woods. They slipped through a c***k in the barrier. They are twenty minutes north of your position.”
Looking at each other, neither hesitated.
Henry ran outside and shifted as Katherine’s hand shot out and her staff flew in her hand. “Let’s go Zeus.” Dog barking and following behind it’s mistress into the woods, Katherine was peering into the sky when she heard a twig snap.
