Old Friends

Katherine didn’t stay the night with Henry even though she was tempted. Not ready to go from sleeping alone to in a bed with the man she wanted to have babies with, Katherine was sure she’d jump him like a b***h in heat. Trying to tame her wild thoughts with space, she was helped with rudeness and disrespect. It was the next morning and she’d wanted to get out of the house. While not time for work for her yet, she hadn’t wanted her mom or dad to come and ruin the bliss her mate had given. Feeling an ease knowing he was on her side, she’d felt confident when she’d gone to the beautiful library in the nook of the village, surrounded by beautiful flora. The three-story building was made of iron and glass, it overlooked the village and was run by the owl people. Nocturnal beasts who preferred the night, they seemed to awaken in the summer. Up in the day, and their mystical library appearing with them, they stayed the three months. And then they were gone. For the time being that they were there, Katherine was grabbing some reading material when she felt eyes taking her in. Knowing she looked delicious in her opinion she didn’t wince away as she remembered who she was. That she was confident in her skin, and no one should take that away. Easier said than done when a voice rang out, “Well don’t you look whorish, is this what they taught you to wear in the human cities?” Confused on how her outfit was a problem, the long skirt hit her ankles as it was a cute thrift from Eloise. A faded pink with little white flowers, it fit snug around the hips but was still modest. And while her shirt wasn’t exactly modest to the same standard of showing no skin, it wasn’t like she was naked either. Wearing a halter top that was off the shoulders, and with the part around her breast and sleeves ruffled like she was in the Pirates of the Caribbean, it showed her shoulders and back. Having strings tied around her, the thin waist was flaunted with her wearing a silver chain that had little silver coins with old pixie dialect etched into it jingling like little bells. Katherine’s strawberry blonde hair becoming more sun kissed as it sat half up in a bun and half down in little braids and curls, the little flowers could have been glued how well they stayed. All in all, Katherine didn’t think her outfit warranted her to be spoken to in that manner. Hell, even if she had been naked she didn’t approve of the way she’d been spoken to. Looking around like the woman had to be speaking to someone else, when Katherine saw no one, she turned back and raised an eyebrow, “I beg your pardon?” Frumpy and caked face with the wrong foundation shade, the woman that resembled a ghost bitterly sniffed, “Well I was going to ask if you had given your soul over to a more mature and dignified manner of living.” Her nose turned up, “I can see not.” About to throw hands with the old woman, Katherine was surprised when it was Valentina Webb that surprisingly came to her defense with a raised eyebrow at the audacity before fixing the woman a withering look and snapping, “Why don’t you mind your business you mean old bat, she’s not bothering you. How dare you.” And it was as shrewd eyes narrowed seeing her, Ms. Sprig looked disgusted as Valentina’s cold steel eyes sliced her in half, “Don’t at your old age you have anything else to enjoy besides bother happy people? Or is that all bitter harpies have to look forward to? Bullying others?” Appalled at the young witch staring at her in disapproval, Ms. Sprig’s lipstick covered teeth were revealed as she barked, “Oh and you’d know all about those evil ways won’t ya? You little demon seed of immoral behavior!” Valentina’s eyes got colder as she hissed, “And there you go again, all in other people’s business. How about you mind the business that pays your rent? Because last I checked, we’re adults, and we don’t answer to anyone. Especially not you.” Ms. Sprig started to speak but Katherine grinned viciously, “And it’s not wise for her to be in anyone’s business considering I know all of HER business.” Surprised, Ms. Spring paled as Katherine jerked her chin to the left and hissed, “Like how you’re trying to bankrupt your so-called “friend’s” business by making love with her partner.” Seeing her referring to Mrs. Gertrude Saint with her husband Reginald Saint, the sweet old woman was browsing completely unaware as her husband looked up. Having heard Katherine and seeing the tension building, he quickly shook his head but as Katherine shook her head at him openly admitting she would not pity him, he quickly pulled his wife away. Choosing to protect her and not hurt her, Ms. Sprig watched him go pissed off and hurt the man who loved her only when he wanted wouldn’t come to her defense. But that was their agreement, so she was left to clean up the mess she’d made. “Y-you, don’t know what you’re talking about. i***t girl.” Ms. Sprig tried to lie her way out. Use the fact that there wasn’t any proof of such things. But Katherine shrugged as she taunted, “You’d be amazed at things I know. But you’d also be scared if I told the entire village how you almost opened the box of-.” Ms. Sprig screeched. It was loud and as the fury made her blind for a moment, it was the fact the little girl knew her greatest shame that nearly made Willow Sprig go insane. Only for whispers to remind her they were in public. Even when an amused Katherine stared at her, the know-it-all little b***h taunted, “Careful darling we’re in public. Wouldn’t want the village to know? Would we?” Willow righted herself as everyone slowly glanced away only to glance back, no one seemed to hear as Katherine predicted, “Yeah and he doesn’t seem too eager ruin his life if people were to find out, you’ve been letting him creep since his last child left for their mate’s home lands. I’m sure you’d get a worse side eye if they found out that on top of it, you almost caused a crater worse than Shadow Cove’s.” Valentina gasped, scandalized, watching the last of Ms. Sprig’s haughty and almighty demeanor vanish in a blink. Busted as she stood trembling and looking for something to say back, Katherine was ruthless as she poked, “Should I tell everyone your business? Like the time I saw the two of you behind the school, or the time you almost burned his house down with her and their grandkids inside because you realized he will never leave her, and you’re stuck being his side piece until the grave because he’s an asshole and your desperate?” Looking green now, Willow trembled horrified and outraged only Katherine scoffed in amusement, “Right, of course you don’t want me telling everyone that. So maybe you should find a better hobby than flapping them lips about business, before I everyone all up in yours.” Unable to come back from that as she stood rigid at her own sins being thrown in her face, the woman was left to waddle out of the library with her face down. Grabbing her son Augustus who had been listening in, he asked his mother later if the matters were true. Only to get a slap in a face and yelled at for asking about private matters and how they shouldn’t be discussed in public so disrespectfully. Only for the younger and yet wiser man to look down at her with a severe frown as he asked, “Like how you all did to her?” Left with a gobsmacked expression, Willow Sprig was only the first one to get a slice of humbled pie. And as people learned how their actions would have consequences, Katherine continued to find flowers in her garden. “It’s so good to see you back with thorns on that rose beautiful.” Valentina greeted sweetly as she took her shades off, “Good to see ya girlie.”
