Dressed in a long black skirt like Katherine’s that had pink roses detailed at the bottom, Valentina wore a dark burgundy mesh short sleeve over her black bralette. Black curls tied back with a dark burgundy bandana, Valentina grinned as Katherine chirped, “You too Valentina, how you been?” Shrugging casual, the witch was opening a piece of gum and being coy when she in a sing-song voice playfully mused about being just fine as she noticed something.
Even though they were the same age, Valentina had always thought Katherine a princess with nothing in common. Only for her eyes to be darker, her scent to be stronger, and her power to even be something to appraise in respect.
“Wanna check out with me and catch up?” Nodding as they went to the lines to do just that, the huge clunky date, time, and hourly marks for when the books would be due appeared as they were scanned by the guardian.
Human in some senses, owls in others, some had the big yellow and orange eyes, some had the necks that turned like something out of cartoons. But as their feathers on their arms or faces, to their beak like noses made everything about their species clear.
Strigia. Owl People. Or as they liked to be called, at least this parliament, Knowledge Guardians. Beautiful and unique, but frightening in a sense too, the dark orange eyes that looked at her was free of the judgement she was use to. Instead the being checking her books out looked at the books, nodded at her selection and then in a deep voice melodic hoot told, “Your books will return themselves if you don’t. Time of return by date, hour, minute is on back of all of your books. Enjoy your learning.”
Eyes locking and seeing a beautiful purple sky that confused you for either late night or early morning, the stars of night while the clouds were made for a sunny day. Almost soaring in them, she landed as she suddenly blinked and looked at the being, his head arched to the side as she suddenly said, “Thank you, have a nice day.”
And started to leave.
Waiting for Valentina, the powerful witch locking eyes with the man, and seeing night too. But an inkier night, one of a bright blood moon and pain, she flinched making his feather’s on his arms stand up. Sensing the difference in nights the two held in their heads, the being almost wanted to ask the witch.
Only for her to nod to him and quickly run away…
“Are you okay gorgeous? You look a little pale?” Walking together, Valentina suddenly snapped out of her thoughts as to why he kept coming to mind. Looking to her friend, she forced herself to relax, “Fine, just a lot on my mind.” Agreeing, with a sigh, Valentina was shocked when she suddenly flipped off Ida Grim talking about her to Bethena Sham.
Squawking in protest, it was when Katherine hollered, “How’s Smitty doing today? Good?” That the gossiping woman made a noise like she’d just had a mini heart attack. Seeming to realize she was up against a fire she couldn’t handle they watched her turn and haul ass. Bethena was confused as was Valentina but as they both looked to a calm Katherine, the pixie was cool as a cucumber waving Valentina along.
Following behind her and realizing she hadn’t been talking out the side of her neck when confronting Willow Sprig, Valentina wondered then what all Katherine Tomsen knew. “You seem pretty knowledgeable about these old ladies dirt for someone who hasn’t been home in two years.” Katherine giggled, “I’ve known these ladies dirt since before I left. I just didn’t want to stoop to their low before.”
She gave a sardonic grin, “I’m a little meaner now.” A little nervous but also amused, the darkness in Katherine was a shock and thrill for the witch who basked in the dark. Grabbing on for the ride, she nudged the girl’s shoulder, “That’s some bad ass s**t. Well use your powers for good at least, it’ll make you different than them in the end.”
Agreeing, they’d gotten to Spellbound when she’d started to invite the witch in for a lemonade and girl talk with the other ladies. Only for her to notice a presence and in disbelief whisper, “You’re f*****g kidding me.” Turning and looking over her shoulder, she looked, and waited, and as they appeared like the shadow they were?
She suddenly told Katherine, “I gotta go sweet heat, talk to you later.”
Taking off suddenly, way faster than her little legs looked like they should be able to fly, Katherine was concerned. Especially as a black shadow chasing after her gushed by sending cold air up her arms like a winter chill in the early spring had come.
Watching them disappear down the block, Katherine would have helped. But she knew Valentina was more than capable of taking care of herself. So instead of getting involved in something her friend might not want her to, she went into work.
Not feeling the once anxiety at being in the front of the store she realized that it was because she’d gotten use to hiding again. Hiding in the back here hoping to not be seen or spoken of, she knew she still was because they knew she was here. And they wanted her to hear but not say anything as they gossiped and talked about her.
Taking her down a peg at a time until her self-esteem was in purgatory.
Too late, been there and now she realized everyone who had taken her down only did it to put themselves up one. To feel like they had anyway. Only now, she didn’t want to hide in a stuffy room, she’d done nothing that deserved her hiding in shame. Having done that once too and never going to be confined to four walls again, Katherine would stand on the fact if she really wanted this to work? No more hiding.
Meaning she didn’t even blink as she confidently called out, “Welcome to Spellbound.” When the door opened and someone came in, no one approached for assistance. Instead, they walked around the store absentmindedly like they had been there before and knew what they needed.
Leaving her to go back to humming and sweeping forgetting they were even there.
So much so, Katherine was in her own little world when she almost hadn’t heard, “That’s lovely.” Humming dying down, she turned and seeing Samuel Tindell standing behind her, she raised an eyebrow, “Thanks. Can I help you?” Seeing her looking around for his twin, Samuel sighed, “Bernadette isn’t here.”
Turning back to him, Katherine gave a sarcastically sharp grin, “Sorry I thought you two were the Siamese twins. You know always joined at the hip?”
Samuel knew Katherine was referring to the woods and even before she’d left. Having been shy growing into himself, or more like insecure, the kid had never spoken up against anyone. Too scared to be the weak link, he was even weaker by being a follower instead of being his own judge of character.
Which led him to just stand by idle as a lot of things that shouldn’t have happened all because he was too chicken s**t. No more.
“I’m sorry for what my sister said to you, she had no right to insult you or insinuate anything about you when she doesn’t even know the truth. Just word of mouth garbage that she’s repeated because it makes her feel better about choices she’s made.” Knowing what he was referring to had Katherine rolling her eyes realizing this was the point he was trying to get to, “Right, and that leads into you wanting what?”
Knowing his apology hadn’t buttered her up any, Samuel was uncomfortable as he confessed, “My sister is hiding at home. She’s sure you’ll tell everyone what she’s done and she doesn’t even know how you know so it’s making her nervous.” Nervous, there was proof or something that would land her in Katherine’s shoes.
A pariah with a reputation for getting boys off. Left to be treated like scum and her mate warned away from her like she was a disease. Unable to face it, she’d been hiding ever since Katherine’s mate had also gotten in her s**t.
“She’s scared she’ll be the next you. And while Bernadette is a lot of things, she is far from being the ice queen she’s pretended to be.”
Instead, she was a soft marshmallow scared of the judgement that could come. Having been wailing about being called a slut over a mistake she’d made two years ago; the pious action wasn’t lost on her brother. When Samuel had pointed out she was a hypocrite after having done the same to Katherine, it had led to her wailing how he’d even turned against her.
Their mother then had intervened and sent him out to find Katherine. Wanting him to beg for her silence, neither woman had a leg to stand on with her and so it left Samuel in his current predicament.
Watching Katherine maul over his words as she felt the friction burn from the spineless behavior. Of course, Mrs. Tindell wouldn’t face her, but she didn’t want the village to turn on her daughter. Not like how the older pixie had coached so many girls in their community to turn against Katherine, stating her to be a bad influence.
And while it would be poetic justice to get her revenge on them both, Katherine didn’t have it in her to do such a thing.
So, she was honest and frank, “Look unlike her and your mother, I don’t have any reason to go around blasting a young woman’s personal business or trying to shame her. Even though neither had a problem doing it with me, I won’t ever stoop to that level. I’m not as disgustingly uncivilized.”
It’s not my place or even in my heart to do so.” But her warning was clear as she told him to take it back to his family, “But if she ever steps to me again, it’ll be no mercy given. I won’t give a s**t whose feelings I hurt. I'll burn her little life down until all of you are walking around with a paper bag over your heads.”
Surprised as the threat landed in his lap like a block of ice, Samuel then realized the pixie didn’t just have dirt on his sister. And as he had to wonder what scandalous or even salacious activity their mother had been into, Samuel realized it didn’t matter.
His stomach turned enough with his sister’s business rattling around his head, no need for him to make himself permanently nauseas.
Instead, Samuel held out a hand and after a firm shake with Katherine, he manned up and promised to tell the women in his house to shut up. Please. For his sake and theirs. ht.
