her warning

Charlette’s P.O.V. “Danny, can you get me something to eat? I am starving,” I yelled while throwing my bag on the couch and plopped myself there too. Two hours of vigorous exercise always leave me starving like a bull. Danny always said that I ate more after I came back from the gym. “Here.” I grinned, immediately sitting up, folding my legs in front of me, and took the plate of chicken salad (My favorite) from her. “Your mother is home,” she whispered, and my smile froze. I immediately looked at her in bewilderment. “She asked you to meet her in her study after you freshen up.” She added in whispers, but I felt as if I was sentenced to death. Danny, our housekeeper and chef, gave me a sympathetic look, but it only made me feel worse. “How is her mood?” I asked her anxiously, hoping for a good response, but to my dismay, she still gave me a sympathetic look. She patted my shoulder with a sympathetic sigh and then walked out. I just blinked, dumbfounded, holding the plate in my hands, looking at her back, not knowing what to do now. My mother asked to meet her. Did she know about my fight at the street? Did she know about my sneaking out to meet Adam? Or did she?????? I jerked my head immediately. NO…. That’s not possible. She can’t possibly know about that. They have a strict rule to keep the information confidential of all their constants, and I never heard anything about leaking information. I looked down at the plate after some time and contemplated whether I should eat first or to go and meet my mother. The horses inside my stomach were now running a marathon. “Forget it. With an empty stomach, I won’t be able to stay still for more than fifteen seconds in front of her. I need my stamina.” I comforted myself and then started eating happily. It’s not like this is the first time that I have been summoned by my mother. She loved me and cared for me, I know that, but she was way crueller than any dictator who existed on the surface of the world. She was an understanding mother, that I must say, but her rules set for me were hard. Normally, she speaks in a soft voice, but once she loses her temper.... Phew.... Still, I took my phone out of the bag first pocket and messaged Mona if, by any means, Mom had discovered about my fight at the street. She didn’t reply but it didn’t worry me. She had so many extra classes after school that she barely gets time to have a proper sleep of six hours. I finished the salad, and burped at the end, rubbing my belly in satisfaction. Now was the time to face my mother. “Cheer up, Char. She won’t bite.” A gave myself a pep-talk and put the empty plate on the table in front of me before taking the glass of water. After finishing the glass, I stood up and walked towards the study. It was on the first floor beside my mother’s bedroom. Mom purchased this villa when I was eight years old. I never saw my father. Danny, who was always with us, told me that my father died in an accident abroad when he was there on an official trip. So, no father figure in my life, but I was glad that Mom never thought about a second marriage. I took a few deep breaths before knocking on the study door. I heard her asking me to come inside in a cold voice. I slowly opened the door and peeked inside. “You called me, Mom?” I asked her in a meek voice. She lifted her head up and my electric blue eyes met with her amber eyes. I must have had my eye colour from my father. “Come inside, Char.” She asked, and I gulped hard before entering the study. I slowly closed the door and moved my body towards her to face her. “Your homeroom teacher called me today.” She told me, and I frowned. “She needs my consent to let you go to Manhattan for a competition. You never told me that you have participated in such competitions?” she added further, and I smiled faintly, my confidence to speak in front of her coming back, as it wasn’t about my mischievous activities outside. “I have been participating in these competitions ever since I started middle school, Mom. You always forgot.” I reminded her, pouting a little in complaint. She stopped whatever she was doing on her laptop and narrowed her eyes. I gave her a helpless look, clasping my hands behind my back. She groaned while rolling her neck and closed her eyes. “I am sorry, kiddo. Once again, I repeated the history, didn’t I?” she asked me in a tired voice. I smiled widely this time and walked towards the desk. “It’s okay, Mom. You didn’t mean to forget,” I comforted her, but she looked disappointed. “So, are you coming to school tomorrow?" I asked her expectantly and she nodded. My mother never stopped me from participating in these competitions and other extracurricular activities. The only condition is that I need to keep my grades up. “One more thing, Char.” She spoke further with a serious expression on her face. She pushed the laptop aside and clasped her hands on the top of the desk in front of her. “One of your classmates, Emanuel Jackson,” she spoke further, and I furrowed my brows as soon as I heard his name. “Is he coming to school now?” she asked, and I nodded in response, still curious and confused as to why she asked. “Yeah… she resumed today. Why did you ask?” I replied to her without any hesitation, but asked her out of curiosity. “You and Mona need to stay away from him, Char. No matter what, don’t let him come closer to you at any cost. Jacksons come from old money, and their foundation is solid in this city, but they also have some underhanded connections. You know what I mean,” she explained briefly, but it was enough to make my heart skip a beat. “I… understand, Mom.” I answered, but it also made me feel sad for me. It was clear to everyone that Emanuel had some interest in me. Not that it matters to me, but I was still sad. “I know this look very well, Char. You have a crush on her, don’t you?” I turned red. My mother took me off guard. She smiled while jerking her head lightly. My mother was strict about my dating life, and closeness with boys. She had prohibited me from dating anyone in school. I was free to have male friends, but with clear boundaries. I had no restrictions on going out but she monitored my outing. “Having a crush is normal at your age, kiddo, but it doesn’t mean that you have to be in a relationship with your crush, right?” she asked me in a soft voice. I pursed my lips into a thin line, but nodded in agreement. I also had crush on Adam at some point or that was what I thought before he shattered my heart. “Families like Jacksons have more enemies than friends, and we are not anywhere in their league. This is not about keeping you away from a boy. This is about keeping you and Mona away from danger.” She was still soft on her voice, trying to make me understand her concern. No matter who rebellious I am by nature, what she said was true. It's about safety. Although my mother was a successful business-woman, and we could also be considered rich, Emanuel was of some other level, and there would be no surprise to me if they had connections in the underworld. "I understand, Mom, but it will be difficult to stay clear of him though." I replied, and she immediately raised her brows, smile vanishing from her face. "We have three classes in common, and if I remember correctly, we are participating in three competitions together." I clarified my previous statement. It's better that I told her instead of she learns it from someone else. "But this is about academia, kiddo. I am talking about personal relationship. Being a classmate and partners in competition is not a problem. You should not have any personal interaction outside the school," she warned me again, but clarified her intentions patiently. "I got it, Mom. I will keep this in mind," I assured her with a tight smile. I was sure that she was not convinced, but I understood her concern completely. "O yeah... next Saturday, you are coming with me to attend a party. You will go shopping tomorrow as you need a formal dress for the event," she informed, and I raised my brows with a serious expression. "Any target?" I asked her and she nodded in confirmation.
