I watched the door slam shut as if there was nothing better for me to do, as if I hadn’t been hearing the calls from the Underworld, as if I hadn’t been hearing my demons begging me to be allowed out because it was dark. But there was no way for them to go ahead and do that, unless I went back, and I wasn’t ready to go back. Those who were ranked high enough to let themselves out would do so, but the rest would be forced into a night of seclusion, just as they spend their days.
They would be bound to be upset, bound to be unhappy with his new turn of events, but there wasn’t anything that they would be able to do about it, there wasn’t anything that they would be able to do even if they wanted to in the first place.
